Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

December 14, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.  We'll catch up on the latest news involving Vonage. Then we'll read a thread about a wireless router-related issue and another thread about the Vonage VTech IP-8100-2 Cordless Phone. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage HQ Receives Threatening Letter with Powder

The Asbury Park Press reports that police are investigating the source of a threatening letter containing a suspicious powder — later determined to be nontoxic — discovered Wednesday afternoon in Vonage's mailroom at their Holmdel, New Jersey headquarters.

Brooke Schulz, who is Vonage senior vice president for corporate communications, said the incident did not disrupt operations.

"Our employees followed policy and procedure to the letter by notifying Holmdel police and following Vonage protocol," Schulz said in a statement.

"We have a very good working relationship with the Police Department here in Holmdel and are thankful for its quick response and thorough handling of this incident," she added.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member secureme wants to be able to turn off the wireless on his WRTP54G he uses with his Vonage service. So to find out how, he has started a Vonage Forum thread with the name, Turn Off Wireless on WRTP54G.

"I have a weird setup and was wondering if I can do something about it," secureme writes.

"First I have cable into my SURFboard modem. Then I have a wireless linksys router (WRT54G) connected to the modem. Then I have my Voip Linksys wireless router (another WRTP54G) wired to my linksys router. Then I have my phone wired to my Voip Linksys wireless router (yes wired to it, not wireless)."

"So, I find this a bit silly... it seems redundant to me but maybe I'm missing something," secureme writes as he gets ready to ask his question.

"Why do I need wireless to be enabled on the Voip Linksys router?," he asks. "I've turned it off and I still can talk on the phone and use my other router for wireless internet. I'm not breaking anything, am I?

"So the second question is, now that I turned off wireless on the WRTP54G, I can't get to," secureme follows up by asking. "I'm assuming because I turned it off (duh), but how do I turn it back on if I need to for some reason?"

Answering is NateHoy, one of our most knowledgeable Vonage Forum Members.

"I have the exact same configuration (Modem -> WRT54G -> WRTP54G)," Nate writes. "You can turn off the wireless on the WRTP54G without any problems - mine's been turned off for over a year now.

Then Nate tells secure me that to turn wireless off in the WRTP54G, go into the "Wireless" page and set the wireless mode to "Disabled". To turn it back on, go in and turn it to "Both".

Nate also points out that he also has a detailed guide for setting up a WRTP54G behind a WRT54GL (the Linux version of the WRT54G) running aftermarket firmware. "If your WRT54G is new, you probably won't be able to run the aftermarket firmware, but the setup instructions on the WRTP54G could be useful for you," he writes.

The guide is at:.

"One of the things the instructions above gives you is how to set up 'remote administration', which will allow you to access your WRTP54G's setup screens from your WRT54G's network," Nate points out at the close of his post. "You can also simply plug a computer into the WRTP54G temporarily if you need to do any setup on it."

New Vonage Forum Member orcsoul has started a new Vonage Forum thread that he has entitled, IP8100-1 expandable with multiple handsets?. This thread is about the VTech IP-8100-2 Cordless Phone.

"I bought the IP8100-1 from Vonage and was wondering if it is expandable with multiple handsets, and if so, how many?," he writes. "Is the 8100-1 and 8100-2 the same phone just the -2 comes with an extra handset instead of having to purchase them separate?"

Familiar with this issue, new Vonage Forum Member techie74 posts a response.

"You can have up to 4 handsets on that device," techie74 answers orcsoul.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that both of the Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Friday morning for the newest edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including news about what bloggers have been writing about Vonage this week.
