Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.  We'll catch up on the latest news involving Vonage. Then we'll read a thread about QoS (Quality of Service) issues and then there's this thread I want to tell you about and it is about an ATA-related problem. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

Vonage Spends $18 Million In Online Ads In November

Marketing and advertising research firm Nielsen/NetRatings estimates that Vonage spent $18,081,300 in online advertising in November. That would put Vonage in seventh place among all the companies Nielsen/NetRatings tracks..

Vonage online ads also are estimated to have received 6,607,430 "impressions" in November. An "impression" is when an ad on a web page is served up to a viewer. Such an event counts as an "impression" whether the website visitor clicks on the link or not.

The leader in both categories, incidentally, is GUS Plc, an online retailer based in the U.K. And Verizon was the only other predominantly telephone services provider (as opposed to a corporation that owns an Internet calling service) to land in the top ten.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

A new Vonage Forum Member with a very colorful user name that I'd rather link to than repeat here has started a new thread he calls DSL filter help QoS? So let us call this new Member by the name of David, which is his actual name.

"I just got AT&T DSL at my office and ran some speed tests (thx vonage-forum) and the upload is crap (92Kbps) compared to what they guaranteed as a minimum floor upstream (384Kbps)," he writes. "So I was talking to the AT&T tech trying to troubleshoot the line and he had me remove the filter from the line and plug the DSL modem straight into my jack. Now, my speed went up considerably (262Kbps), but still not great. BUT, the QoS is half - 93% down to mid-50%."

Then Dave goes on to ask his questions.

"Do I just have a faulty filter?," he asks "Does a filter typically provide a more steady flow of data and thereby increase the QoS? What's more important, a higher QoS or more upstream bandwidth?"

Dave tells us his office will be running two dedicated Vonage voice lines and 1 dedicated fax. "5/6 machines will have very limited web access so the bandwidth conflict between surfing/downloading is not a consideration - My primary concern is making sure there is enough for the phones to work," he tells us.

"The DSL filter is put on the jacks that connect to a phone," writes fellow Vonage Forum Member bcooper in response to what David writes. "There should not be a filter between the jack and the DSL modem. Try a speed test on I get better results with that.

"The filter 'filters out' the DSL frequencies so you don't hear them on the telephone," bcooper explains.  

Dave adds, "well, the DSL filter has two ports - one for the DSL modem and one for a phone/fax. I assumed this device that came with my DSL modem from AT&T was the proper piece of equipment to use."

"Aren't the changes in the QoS worth noting between the use of their filter and not? So, my real question is, what is more important - the upstream bandwidth or the QoS from the speed test that is located on this website?"

Because Vonage Forum Member Airpost had problems with a D-Link VTA he was using with his Vonage service, he decided to start a Vonage Forum thread about it. He's called this thread, 

"New Vonage user - just got my Dlink VTA yesterday. I set it up last night and everything was working fine," Airpost writes. "I was able to make test calls. 

Then Airpost includes his setup: Dlink Cable Modem > Dlink DFL-700 Router >Linksys/Cisco 24 port switch > Dlink VTA, pc's, Xbox's, etc.. Cox Cable is his service provider.

"Tonight, when I picked up the phone, I get the message 'no network or no internet connectivity,' " he writes. When I check the Dlink VTA, sure enough, the network light was off." 

Next, Airpost lists the troubleshooting steps he has performed:

1)Reboot Dlink VTA - no network light.
2)Reset Dlink VTA (numerous times) - no network light
3)Replaced ethernet cable with known good ones - no network light
4)Plugged the Dlink VTA straight to the cable modem - no network light
5)Plugged the Dlink VTA to the DMZ port of my router - no net light
6)When the Dlink VTA is plugged to my switch, no lights on both the VTA and the port switch
7)Obviously have internet connection since I'm using it now to write this
8)Rebooted Cable Modem, then router then VTA - no network light

"Could this be a dead device? Did I miss any troubleshooting steps?," he asks.

Last night, Airpost followed up with an updated post.

"Just called Vonage tech support. Spent a good hour troubleshooting including switching power sources," Airpost tells us. "No luck - seems like the Dlink VTA just died peacefully. 

"Vonage will be sending me a replacement and my old one will be buried somewhere," adds Airpost, who ends his post with a final question:

"Would a surge from a phoneline cause the Ethernet port to fail?," he asks. "I would guess not but just can't figure out how the Ethernet port broke.

Vonage Stock Report

On Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $7.27 a share, which was a rise of 2 cents (0.28%)  from Monday's closing price of $7.07 a share but not only that. It was 20 cents higher than the session low which was $7.07 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Monday got to 961,200 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that both of the Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75
