Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

December 12, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.  We'll catch up on the latest news involving Vonage. Then we'll read a thread from a Vonage user who is losing his Vonage connection, and then there's this thread about Vonage router-related QoS (Quality of Service) We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Canada Reacts To Canadian Regulator's Decisions

On Monday, Industry Canada Minister Maxime Bernier outlined new criteria for determining when the Canadian Radio and Telecommunications Commission (similar to the FCC in the U.S.) should hold back from regulating local telephone service provided by the former monopoly telephone companies. Business customers, for example, would have to have access to at least two fixed-line facilities-based service providers for forbearance to occur – an incumbent, for example, and a cable company -- while consumers would also have to have access to at least one wireless service provider

Analysts said Bernier’s moves were previewed last week when he set aside legislation in the House of Commons that will allow the Competition Tribunal to levy fines of up to $15 million on telecommunications firms that abuse their market power.

Yet Vonage Canada isn't sure those fines will be much of an anti-competitive safeguard. “On the surface, it sounds fantastic,” said Joe Parent, vice-president of business development at Toronto-based Vonage Canada, who added that enforcement of the fines is a different matter. “If fines are imposed after the infraction, their ability to act as a deterrent is less effective than something to prevent (anti-competitive) action.” The definition of anti-competition is much more strict in the Competition Act, Parent added, than the Telecom Act.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Because Vonage Forum Member areamike has been having some difficulty with his Vonage connections, he has decided to start a Vonage Forum thread named Voice drops in and out.

"Every time I am on the Internet doing simple browsing and using my Vonage line at the same time, I constantly get complaints from the party on the other end of the line that my voice is choppy and cutting in and out," areamike writes. He says he has tried lowering the bandwidth save months ago and it has made no difference.

Then, after areamike posts his Vonage tests results, current Vonage Forum Member of the Week Steve48 joins in.

"If you haven't set up QoS on the D-link to favor the VT2442, you should do that first," writes Steve48.

"I don't like the looks of that download pause. Where is your computer plugged in? If it's plugged into the VT2442 LAN, then move it to the D-link and repeat the test," Steve48 adds. "If it's already on the D-link, plug it directly into the modem and repeat the test."

" I have tried plugging my PC directly into VT2442, but then I cannot connect to (the) Internet," areamike comes back to say. "I try ipconfig /release and /renew and I get a 169.*.*.* address...the dreaded dead windows network address. Cannot connect to DHCP server.

"This VT2442 is a piece of crap," areamike adds. "I was wanting to use it initially as my router and take the D-Link out of the equation, but the VT2422 scores a big zero where configuration is concerned. No port forwarding or Firewall, URL filtering etc. like my D-Link has..."

Next, areamike reposts his test results. And that draws very specific feedback from Steve48.

"It sounds like there are a couple of problems," Steve48 diagnoses. "First is QoS on the D-link. Unfortunately, I'm not a networking expert, so I'm not familiar with the router or its QoS (quality of service) setup, or even what its capabilities are. Unless someone else jumps in, we'll have to fall back on your user's manual. See if it says anything about how you configure it so that the VT2442 gets priority over your computer so you don't run out of bandwidth on the uplink when you're browsing.

"The issue with not being able to plug into the LAN side of the VT2442 is something else," Steve48 points out. "By default, it should be set up as a DHCP server for its subnet. If your computer is set to get its address dynamically, then everything should work. Since it doesn't, a reset of the VT2442 should get it right. This is assuming that you want to mess with it at all. Ordinarily, with the D-link to service the computer, you won't care about the VT2442 LAN side."

New Vonage Forum Member camliner has begun a Vonage Forum thread and he has entitled it, QoS Issues.

"I have been having problems really from day one with calls sounding horrible when we are uploading," camliner writes. "Normal web surfing doesn't seem to make a difference, but if we are, for example, uploading photos to Flickr then things get really bad.

"Either the call is choppy or in worst the caller can't hear us at all. I don't seem to have a lot of control over the QoS features on this router (sent to me through Vonage)," camliner adds.

He then posts his test results, which draws a response from Steve48.

"The WRTP54G is supposed to favor the Voip automatically, but it's known that it doesn't function all that well as a router," Steve48 writes. He then advises camliner to search the Vonage Forums for the writings of member NateHoy on the subject.

Then Steve48 tells camliner that his upload speed is a bit marginal to start with.

"I suspect your best bet is to get a good router with QoS and use it ahead of the WRTP54G," Steve48 recommends. "Use the Vonage unit just for phone service."

By the way, all this news about all those new Canadian phone regulations and Vonage's response to them encouraged me to remind you to check out our Vonage Canada Forum.

This Vonage Forum section offers a handy list of threads about Vonage service and equipment in Canada. Yet although this section is of primary interest to Vonage's Canada customers, many of the threads you will find here are about equipment, set-up and other topics of interest to any Vonage user. Just click on a thread and it will open.

The Vonage Canada Forum is very popular, and it has 564 topics and 3,337 posts. Here's the direct link to the Vonage Canada Forum section of the Vonage Forums.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that both of the Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Wednesday morning for the newest edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
