Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.  We'll catch up on the latest news involving Vonage. Then we'll read a thread from a user with a modem problem that is affecting his QoS, and there's another Vonage Forum thread worth reviewing about a router issue and possible interference. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price. 



In The News

According to a new report from tech research firm TeleGeography, U.S. subscribers to Voip services grew 18% to 8.2 million in the third quarter, but the growth rate slowed for a second straight quarter. Vonage remains the largest Voip provider with 1.95 million customers.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Choppy audio and low QoS is a problem that new Vonage Forum Member mcdoud has been experiencing. So he started a thread with that name and then posted his Vonage test results.

VonageTPA, who is one of our most frequently posting experts, takes one look at mcdoud's test results and then offers this advice:

"No need for additional testing on this one," VonageTPA writes. "You've got one of the dreaded Toshiba PCX1100 modems... these are known to drop packets left & right when used with P2P, VoIP, and remote-access applications." 

Then VonageTPA suggests that mcdoud take the modem to his Time Warner Cable office "and tell them it doesn't work (mention something about a power hit) and they'll quickly hand you a new modem, probably a Motorola. Everything will work fine then."

Strange things have been happening with Vonage Forum Member ekspa's D-Link router. Because of these issues he decided to start a Vonage Forum thread that he named, Problem with D-Link VTA-VD.

"Vonage was working fine until 4 days ago, when suddenly, every time we turned on our phone, our VTA-VD will reboot. As long as the phone is turned on, the VTA will keep rebooting," ekspa writes.

"When we turn the phone off, it finishes the current reboot, then we get 3 solid lights on the next try," he adds.

Then ekspa gives further details about the problem

"Each time it reboots, the power light will flash red once, then the entire unit goes dark. After a few seconds, the power light comes on solid, then flashes a few times. 

"The Internet light comes on, and the power light flashes green once, then red, and the process starts over," he adds. "If I happen to have the telephone turned on at the time, I can hear an audible 'click' that sounds like I'm being hung up on, but there is no dial tone and the device never fully boots."

After including all of his Vonage test results, ekspa adds this information to this post:

"I've traded emails with Vonage Support since Wednesday night when this first started occurring. I've tried power cycling everything in the network, and I've connected the VTA directly to the cable modem," notes ekspa. "However, every time I pick up my phone, my VTA begins a constant reboot.

"Strangely, if someone calls us, my telephone will ring and the caller ID will work, but when I press the 'on' button on the phone, the call is dropped during the reboot," he points out.

"We're going on 4 days without a phone now and it's driving us crazy!

Steve48 reads ekspa's post and has some opinions that he posts.

"If you're using a 2.4 GHz cordless phone, then interference with your wireless router is a possibility," he writes. "Otherwise I'd say that the VTA is bad. 

"In either case, however, I'd try it with a nice, simple analog phone before reaching any conclusions," Steve48 advises.

"I would also agree that the VTA box is bad," says fellow Vonage Forum Member miked2. "It may be worthwhile just going to Best Buy and buying a new one for fifty bucks."

Vonage Stock Report

On Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $7.07 a share, which was a rise of 33 cents (+4.90%)  from Thursday's closing price of $6.74 a share as well as equal to the session low and that also was $6.74 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Friday added up to be 1,633,400 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that both of the Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75
