Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

December 7, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

As I wrote in yesterday's Digest, I am in Calcutta, India on business.

To give you a flavor of where I am, I've shot a video of my trip from my hotel to an office in Calcutta with which I am doing some business. I've posted the video on the Vonage Forum at this link. Watch and enjoy!

In the news, we'll tell you about a major presentation Vonage Chairman Jeffrey Citron will be making today, and where you can listen in for free We'll go to a new Vonage Forum thread about a connections related issue and then there's another thread about 2.4 Ghz phones and their suitability with Vonage's service. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Citron Speaks at Conference Today: And You Can Listen In

Vonage Chairman and Chief Strategist, Jeffrey Citron, will speak at the UBS 34th Annual Global Media & Communications Conference today, December 7, 2006 at 10:00 AM ET. The event will be held at the Grand Hyatt New York in New York City.

The presentation will be simultaneously Webcast and accessible via Vonage's Investor Relations website at

Shortly after the event, a replay will be available on Vonage's Investor Relations website for two weeks.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

In the Hard Wiring-Installation section of the Vonage Forum there is an interesting new thread that has been entitled, Using ALL the jacks in my house. The thread is started by new Vonage Forum Member pipersdad.

"I'm pretty clear on disconnection telco line," pipersdad writes. "I understand if I plug in to a wall jack from the vt2142 I will activate all the OTHER jacks, but the jack near my computer is the one I use most for phone calls.

As to that question, Steve48 recommends that pipersdad just get a simple Y splitter. "Plug it into the wall jack. Plug the Vonage box into one branch and your phone into the other. (Don't get an L1/L2 splitter, identifiable by the line 1 and line 2 labels on the ports)."

Then in the same post, pipersdad asks "Is there any way I can plug the Vonage box into that jack and have a phone there as well?," pipersdad asks. "Also, any problem waiting until my line is ported over before doing the installation?"

"No," writes Steve48. "But you may want to test disconnecting the telco line while it's still active. When you see that you can make dial tone come and go, you know you've got it right."

Also on the Hard Wiring Installation-Forum, new Vonage Forum Member surfer begins a thread about a subject I see come up here often. The thread's name is 2.4 phones disrupt service?

"I have recently had the worst time with my Vonage service," writes surfer, whose real first name is Mike. He adds that the phone is continually going out and taking the internet with it. After about two hours of this he went out and purchased a new wireless router/adapter, but it doesn't seem to be helping.

Then surfer adds that the next day, he spoke to a couple of levels of Vonage tech support, and was told his 2.4 Ghz phones are causing the problem. As a result of that diagnosis, he wants to get some opinions on whether in fact that is indeed the case.

And then surfer gets a very informative answer from a fellow Vonage Forum Member with a Member name that also calls up images of water.

That would be navydavy2001, who is one of our very most knowledgeable and active Forum Members, provides some valuable input to surfer.

"2.4 GHZ phones are NOT advisable to use for 2 reasons I can think of off the top of my head," states navydavy.

"1) They interfere with any wireless network and vice versa, even if you don't have a wireless network, your neighbor may.

"2) They are extremely exploitable in that anyone with a moderately priced police-type scanner can potentially pick up your coversations.

And then navydavy2001 advises surfer that he "would pick up a 5.8 GHZ phone set and try that. It's a good investment either way."

Vonage Forum Passes 33 Million Page Views

On Wednesday evening, we passed 33 million page views since we started the Vonage Forum back in March, 2003. Every time any one of you clicks on a page on the Vonage Forums, that's one more page view. So let's see if we can reach 34 million page views by New Year's!!

Vonage Stock Report

On Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.70 a share, which was down five cents (-0.74%)  from Tuesday's closing price of $6.75 a share as well as equal to the session low which was $6.70 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Wednesday wound up being 433,600 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that both of the Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Friday morning for the newest edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including what bloggers have been saying about Vonage this week.
