Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

December 6, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

As some of you know. I am in Calcutta, India on business.

To give you a flavor of where I am, I've shot a video of my trip from my hotel to an office in Calcutta with which I am doing some business. I've posted the video on the Vonage Forum at this link. Watch and enjoy!

In the news, we'll find out how Vonage is helping the New Jersey telecom industry, and the economy as well. We'll go to a new Vonage Forum thread from a small business person seeking advice before he signs up with Vonage. Then there's this other thread from a user with what could be a router-related bug.  We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Cited As Good News for New Jersey Economy

An article in today's edition of the Record newspaper's website carries the headline, "Telcom Industry Is Fleeing N.J." It talks about AT&T jobs lost when that company was bought by SBC (and took AT&Ts name but is now headquartered in San Antonio, Texas. And other examples were mentioned.

But not Vonage. In fact, Martha McKay, who wrote the article specifically mentioned that Vonage's founder Jeffrey Citron said his company, based in Holmdel (New Jersey) employs 2,000 people and has invested half a billion dollars in the state building his business.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member CTNYC is thinking about getting Vonage service for his business. But before he does that, he's got some questions. That's why he's started a new Vonage Forum thread called, Small Business Set up Advice needed.

"We are a small, 4 person company with a high call volume (there's at least 3 of us on the phone all the time, plus high incoming volume)," CTNYC explains. "We are moving from a space where phones were provided and are now a bit at sea as to how to set up our phone system."

Then CTNYC says they need one main number, with 4 available lines that role down to each other and then to voicemail (only one voicemail box necessary). "We'll need 5 phones (spread between two rooms), and one fax line plus Internet for 4 people," he further explains.

"We're considering using Vonage but have the following questions/concerns:

1) Will a 768 Kbps (7.1 Mbps/768 Kbps) DSL internet be enough to support all our Vonage lines plus 5 internet users?

2) What phone system is best? Do we need a phone system with a control unit or will 5 basic 4-line phones be OK? Any recommendations for makes or models that work best with Vonage?

3) Is Vonage reliable enough for a business 100% reliant on phone access?"

Fellow Vonage Forum Member Guido13 responds with some very well-thought out advice.

"You are going to run into the same problems I have if you don't have something good to manage and prioritize your traffic," Guido13 tells CTNYC. "You can set up Hunt Groups and have the call roll to a common VM number for your main number, as well as other Call Forwarding options, so that will be quite easy."

And then Guido13 says he has a wireless Panasonic 4-Line system for his business. But then he points out that he is looking into another system as this office/house configuration really pushes the boundaries of this phone system. R

"CA has a new wireless solution out there, but it's costly," he writes. Wired or wireless, that's your big choice. As far as wireless goes, there are very few systems out there that are true 4 line wireless systems.

Next, Guido13 has some overarching advice for CTNYC:

"As far as the phone + Internet, with 4 lines, you will probably want to experiment with the call quality, though I have mine at the highest (90k)<" he writes. With that setting, and all the phones on at once, you will be at half your upstream pipe, so it may seem sluggish at times.

"Have you looked at another solution?," Guido13 then asks CTNYC. "Perhaps a bigger pipe through business cable, or another provider? What about a convergent solution with voice and data on one T1?"

RTP300 "No Routes Found" is a new thread started by new Vonage Forum Member eraoul.

I've been having tons of trouble making calls, and the Vonage tech support people can't seem to fix the problem," eraoul writes. "Anyone have anything similar? I've got a really sweet, fast cable broadband connection, both upload and download speeds are great (10 Mbps down/1 Mbps up).

"Now I get a 'No Routes Found' recording every time I try to make a call," he adds. "The calls seem to go through though."

But next, eraoul gets down to the crux of the problem.

"Previously, most calls would have 1-way audio -- if I made an outgoing call the other person couldn't hear me but I could hear them," he writes. "Incoming calls, though, worked fine. This seems to have gone away for now, although this No Routes Found thing is annoying."

Steve48 offers some advice.

"How far up the tech support chain have you gotten?," Steve48 asks eraoul. "If you're stuck at tier 1 in India, then try calling the 888 250 1799 number.

"Talk to customer service and tell them you're ready to cancel if they don't get you with tier 2 or 3 and get the service fixed," Steve48 recommends.

Vonage Stock Report

On Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.75 a share, which was down nine cents (-1.32%)  from Monday's closing price of $6.84 a share but then again it was 14 cents above the session low which was $6.70 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Tuesday wound up being 524,000 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that both of the Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Thursday morning for the newest edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
