Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

December 5, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll mention where and when you will next get to hear Vonage Chairman and Chief Strategist Jeff Citron speak. And no travel or registration fee is involved. We'll go to a new Vonage Forum thread call quality, and another one about calling toll-free numbers from Canada. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Chairman and Chief Strategist, Jeffrey Citron, will speak at the UBS 34th Annual Global Media & Communications Conference on Thursday, December 7, 2006 at 10:00 AM ET. The event will be held at the Grand Hyatt New York in New York City.

The presentation will be simultaneously Webcast and accessible via Vonage's Investor Relations website at http://ir.vonage.com

Shortly after the event, a replay will be available on Vonage's Investor Relations website for two weeks.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member jakester1 isn't being a jokester when describes his Vonage related problems in a new thread he has started and decided to entitle, Static on Phone line,

"My Internet is up and running using the Motorola VT 2142 adapter, but I still have static on my phone," he writes. (Vonage) tech Support said something about disabling a wire coming in from the telephone pole, but I didn't quite understand.

"Can you tell me how to get rid of the static on the phone?," he then asks. "I have a dial tone and can make outgoing and answer incoming calls. I just can't hear anyone.

Jakester1 quickly follows up with a post in which he writes that after checking some other Vonage Forum posts he I tried plugging my phone line directly into the Motorola device and it's working.

"I'm not sure why the Technical Support folks didn't suggest this in the first place!," he adds.

Then experienced Vonage Forum Member mundy5 sees these posts from jakester1 and decides to follow up with an explanatory post of his own.

"People like me often times connect the Vonage router right into a wall jack to enable all the phones in the house," mundy5 explains. "That way, you don't have to have a cordless set. what you didn't do was disconnect your home from the telephone company in your area.

"So, your telephone lines were getting signals from the telephone company and your Vonage device hence the static," mundy5 points out.  "If having the phone connected directly to your vonage device works for you, great!

Next, Vonage Forum Member che adds that although he agrees, but then tells jakester "if you plan to use multiple interconnected phones from previous service, home wiring might be necessary."

New Vonage Forum Member Topstan starts a new Vonage Forum thread about an issue I hear about from time to time. The thread is called, Calling US 800 numbers from Canada.

"I am interested in getting a personal 800 number so my daughter can call me from Canada," he writes. I read the info on 800 numbers on the Vonage site and it seemed slightly ambiguous on this subject. In one spot it says callers from the US can call you. Later it says callers in the NANP (North American Numbering Plan) can call you. In spite of the asterisk, it does not define what NANP is, but those of us who have worked phones know it means North American Numbering Plan and that Canada is in the NANP.

"The last item on the website says, 'Non-US callers can call Vonage Toll-Free numbers from Domestic US, Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam, and US Virgin Islands,' " he adds.

Then Topstan adds that to him," this would indicate that callers from Canada CAN call US based Vonage numbers, but since this is my primary reason for being interested in a Vonage 800 number, I emailed Vonage Customer Service with that specific question. The first response was a copy of what was on the website. I emailed back that I wanted specific confirmation that a caller from Canada can call a US based 800 number and got a reply that "only callers from US can call you free if you purchase a US based Toll Free number. The callers from Canada cannot call your Toll Free number."

"Well, that should answer the question, but I am left with a nagging suspicion that the service rep did not know what he/she was talking about," Topstan says.

"So... I leave it to you, the experts... particularly any of you who may HAVE a Vonage supplied 800 number. Can people in Canada call your 800 number?"

Well, here on the Vonage Forums you can't do any better for an expert than Steve48.

"Try another Email to Vonage, but this time use the Forum contact page- menu, top left, Vonage Information/Contact Support," Steve48 suggests. "We're told this gets special attention."

Check Out Our Vonage Hard Wiring and Installation Forum

I noticed that in the thread I talked about called, Static on Phone line, there was feedback from Vonage Forum Member che that what jakester1 was facing could have been a wiring-related issue. And that gives me an idea to remind you about our Vonage Hard Wiring and Installation Forum section of our Vonage Forums.

Although hooking up Vonage for service is not difficult at all, new as well as experienced Vonage users sometimes have questions about the right technical setup. Other new and experienced Vonage Forum Members that are moving sometimes post threads here about hard wiring and installation in the place where they have just moved to or are about to. Once again, you will find a linked list of threads about the issues reflected in the title of this Vonage Forum area.

With more than 500 threads and 3,425 posts the Vonage Hard Wiring and Installation Forum is one of our most popular forums- third only to the Vonage Voip Forum and then the Local Number Portability Forum. Here's the direct link to get you there.

"If you do some searching in this forum you will see many comments that the Vonage devices are good Voip devices, but poor routers," he writes.

Vonage Stock Report

On Monday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.84 a share, which actually was a 33-cent increase (+5.04%)  from Friday's closing price of $6.51 a share and also 34 cents above the session low which was $6.50 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Monday reached 1,215,500 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that both of the Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Wednesday morning for the newest edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
