Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

December 4, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll read about what types of communications and computing devices Vonage Chairman Jeff Citron envisions Vonage software being included in that it isn't now.  We'll go to these two Vonage Forum threads about router issues. This is Monday, when we meet our Vonage Forum member of the Week. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Citron: Vonage Could Be Embedded in Cell Phones, Laptops

Vonage Chairman and Chief Strategist Jeff Citron says that Vonage will be issuing Wi-Fi based phone products.

Citron mentioned this during the Reuters Media Summit in New York on Friday.

plans to launch phone products based on Wi-Fi wireless technology in 2007, Chairman Jeffrey Citron said on Friday.

Wi-Fi is a popular short-range network technology that is built into most new laptops, and is also being added to some cell phones and portable gaming devices.

"We expect next year, 2007, to release a next generation Wi-Fi product to continue to pursue making those services more available here," Citron said.

Without specifically naming products that might be released, Citron said Vonage could be embedded in cell phones and laptops.

He declined to elaborate on specific products, but said Vonage's technology could be embedded in handheld devices like cell phones and laptop computers.

"There's so much possibility out there with the construction of mobile Wi-Fi networks going up all over the place, much of that construction is expected to be complete during the 2007, 2008 timeframes," he told the meeting

"For us it will be another generation of handsets for sure, and those handsets will of course ... take advantage of the new trends in this space," he added.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member dbur has started a thread with a title that describes his technical problem he would like a solution for. The thread is called, WRTP54G dropping wireless connection.

"I just set up a Linksys WRTP54G router and the phone clarity is just fine. I have a laptop wired to the router and the internet connection is great on that machine," he writes.

But then dbur explains the problems.

"I have another laptop that I need to connect to the Internet wirelessly however that is giving me problems," he tells us in his thread. "I can connect wirelessly and the signal strength is "excellent", but then the connection drops to "little or no connectivity" within minutes. This happens and I am not on the phone."

"Is there a setting I can adjust somewhere that will remedy this problem?," dbur asks. "I've seen references to firmware, etc. but I'm new to this and I do not know what that means."

Vonage Forum Member Darrell_G is the first to respond to dbur's question.

"The latest firmware version for the WRTP54G is 1.00.62. You can check to see if you have the latest firmware by logging into your routers configuration page," Darrell_G writes. He suggests that dbur type "" without the quotes into his Web browser's address bar. The firmware version will be in the upper-right corner.

"On the laptop in question, have you ever connected wirelessly without dropping the wireless signal using a public wifi hotspot or through a friends wireless network?," Darrell_G then asks dbur. "If you haven't already, check to see if there is a firmware update for your laptop's wireless card."

Then Darrell_G ends his post with some useful information and only for dbur and not even only for Vonage users.

"By the way," Darrell_G explains, the term 'firmware' is basically the software or computer programming that tells the hardware (WRTP54G) what to do."

Vonage Forum Member atinoco received an email from Vonage- the subject and tone of which gave him an idea to start a new Vonage Forum thread which he entitled, Vonage Charging Me for Replacing a Broken Router.

So let us let atinoco tell his story:

"I sent this email to Vonage a while back:

"My router (phone adapter) restarts continuously when its under high traffic (peer 2 peer programs), I get random "lan cable disconnected" messages in both my computers when this happens, my phone line also dies in the meantime, after 30 secs or so my lan and internet its available again for some time and then it happens again.

I'm tired of this phone adapter, it used to work fine, but these restarts are a hassle now, what its the procedure to replace this faulty router.

I got this response:

Thank you for contacting Customer Care.

We understand from your email that you are experiencing issue with your Vonage device and would like to replace it.

We would like to inform you that Vonage will replace the defective device but you will be charged for it as your device is in out of warranty. This may take up to 2 working days.

Alternately, you could also purchase a new device from a Vonage authorized retailer such as Sam's Club, Radio Shack, Best Buy, Circuit City, Staples, Fry's Electronics, Office Depot or CompUSA and activate it online".

"I feel like I'm getting screwed, I thought Vonage would replace faulty adapters for free."

Then Vonage Forum Member butterman joins this thread with some insight for atinoco:

"The products are only replaced free of charge when under warranty, which is 1 year for all of their devices I believe," butterman writes. "After this time they charge you for a new device or you can purchase one at a retail outlet yourself as they mention in the message to you.

Then butterman explains this is Vonage's This is their standard policy because they don't rent the equipment to you, they sell it to you. (Granted it is usually free after rebates and what not, but this is still considered a sale)

"The downside of this is what you are encountering," points out butterman, but the upside is you don't have a monthly rental charge like most people do for things like cable boxes and cable modems."

And then next, butterman has recommendations for atinoco.

"Given your issue about heavy traffic you might consider purchasing a normal router and placing your Vonage device behind this," he writes. "You would want to enable QoS on the main router, but this might help your overall situation."

And this final insight from butterman:

"If you do some searching in this forum you will see many comments that the Vonage devices are good Voip devices, but poor routers," he writes.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that both of the Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Tuesday morning for the newest edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
