Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

December 1, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll read a review of the Vonage V-Phone. We'll go to this Vonage Forum thread from a new Member with several questions about download speeds and equipment. This is Friday, when we review what some bloggers have been writing about Vonage this week.. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

U.K.-based Personal Computer World is out with their review of the Vonage V-Phone.

"Vonage touts its V-phone as the world’s smallest phone, measuring roughly the size of a stick of chewing gum," reviewer Paul Lester writes. "In reality this is simply a USB drive with a headphone socket and pre-installed software to allow you to make calls over the Internet.

"The 250MB flash drive (there’s about 240MB free for your own use) costs a reasonable £19.99," (about $39.40 U.S.) he adds, "but before you buy you’ll have to sign up for the ‘Residential Unlimited’ service plan, which gives you unlimited local and national calls to anywhere in the UK or Ireland for £7.99 (about $15.75 U.S.) a month."

As Paul mentions, "you get your own personal number, which can be tailored to an area code of your choice, integrated voicemail and you can use the phone from anywhere with an internet connection, so cybercafés, your office or a friend’s house are all fair game.

"Once you’ve plugged the USB drive into your PC the ‘Vonage Talk’ control pad fires up,' Paul explains next. "You’ll find a contacts database and call history here, along with some basic functions to automatically accept or ignore incoming calls or block caller-ID delivery."

And then Paul writes about call quality over the device.

"Call quality is obviously the main concern and, although you may need to tweak some sound settings on your PC, on the whole it’s fairly good, " he explains. "You can adjust the volume from your end with the standard volume controls on your PC, but calls did sound rather distant and quiet for the recipient so you do need to speak up and right into the microphone.

And then Paul points out that those people who access the internet through a wireless connection may need to tweak a few settings if quality drops, but for the most part we didn’t experience too many problems.

"Whether or not you’ll find the Vonage V-Phone worthwhile is really down to the £8 a month (about $15.75 U.S.) service plan and whether this would work out better value for money than other options available from BT," he adds.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member daveyboy describes himself as a "heavy downloader." Because of this, he'd like to know if Vonage will work well for him. To learn more about this issue, he has started a new Vonage Forum thread that he has entitled, heavy downloader thinking about switching to Vonage.

I am thinking about switching to Vonage since my current landline service is just too expensive," he writes. "I am a heavy downloader(150gig/month) and am wondering if this is going to cause problems when using Vonage. I would like to say that I do not upload at all, just download.

Then daveyboy asks if all the downloading he does will give him VoIP problems, and if using Vonage will significantly affect his internet speeds. He also wonders whether he should use the Linksys Pap 2 or the VTech IP8100 with Vonage service. He adds that he would consider using the VTech for convenience if it turns out that it is good or better than his current  Panasonic 5.8ghz kx-tg5050w cordless phone.

On this thread daveyboy gets several helpful answers. Let's go over two of them.

"The heavy downloading that you do on a regular basis will definitely affect your Voip voice quality," writes Darrell_G. "If you are going to continue with the heavy downloading, I would recommend to you the Hawking HBB1 Broadband Booster. The HBB1 sits between your cable modem and your linksys router and manages your data traffic for a more efficient use of your networks bandwidth.

"You may be able to accomplish this without the HBB1 by adjusting your QoS settings on your Linksys router," Darrell_G adds. "If not, you can't go wrong with the (Hawking HBB1 Broadband Booster)1...it's a plug-and-play device that sets up in less than 5 minutes."

Then Darrell_G supplies a link for the Hawking HBB1 Broadband Booster:
http://www.hawkingtech.com/products/productlist.php?CatID=36&FamID=80&ProdID=216

"Being that you already have a 5.8ghz phone that you are satisfied with, I would go with the PAP2 device," he adds as advice to daveyboy. "You would connect the PAP2 device by Ethernet cable to an available Ethernet port on your Linksys router."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member EzCo adds a valuable pointer.

"You'll definitely need to implement some QoS, as others have said," he writes. "One thing you can try though is running this speed test to see how your connection is with respect to VoIP."

To these helpful answers daveyboy responds:

"Thanks for the help. I'll (be) going to buy everything today and get it all set up," daveyboy tells us. "If I have problems I'll look into getting that booster. but (I'm) hoping it wont be necessary cause I dont use my phone that much anyway (maybe 2hrs long distance and a few more hrs local)."

In The Blogs

We read about 15 Voip and IP-telephony-related Weblogs. Some we read more than others, but we enjoy most of them. Face it, bloggers are opinion-shapers. So today, we are going to give you a round-up of what the blogs we read have said about Vonage this week.

Here's what the Voip bloggers have been writing about Vonage:

Andy Abramson of VoIP Watch writes his take about Vonage's marketing and investor relations strategies, as well as his suggestions for each.

Om Malik of Om Malik's Broadband Blog comments about where Vonage is these days.

Jon Arnold of Jon Arnold's Blog gives his assessment of Vonage's most recent quarterly financial results.

Russell Shaw of the ZDNet IP Telephony blog writes an article that explores what we wrote about earlier this week in reference to Vonage's strong growth in Florida and what that means for Vonage overall.

Garrett Smith of the Smith On Voip blog draws reference to the Vonage V-Phone.

From time to time, we like to feature interesting and entertaining posts from Blogs that are not necessarily about VoIP, but mention Vonage. In this new MySpace blog I noticed yesterday and it is named actorcameron, blogger Cameron (no surprise there, I guess) writes in part, "I've got this internet telephone setup from Vonage, I've had it for three or four months, and I like it. It sends me an email notification whenever I have a phone message, pretty nifty thing."

Vonage Stock Report

On Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.50 a share, which was a 14 cent decline  from Wednesday's closing price of $6.64 a share as well as the session low of $6.50 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Thursday reached 635,900 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

Check Out Our Vonage UK Forum

The fact that we've featured a UK-based publication's review of the Vonage V-Phone (and that we referred to UK currencies) gives me an idea to mention the fact that we have a Vonage UK Forum here on the Vonage Forums. It's just passed 350 topics and 1700 posts.

This area contains a list of threads about Vonage service and equipment in the U.K. Yet although this section is of primary interest to Vonage's U.K. customers, a good percentage of the threads listed and linked here concern equipment, set-up, equipment and some other topics of interest to the broader Vonage community. Here's the direct link to the Vonage UK Forum.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that both of the Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Monday morning for the newest edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our new Vonage Forum Member of the Week.
