Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

November 29, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we will learn how many subscribers Vonage has in Florida. We'll go over what a reviewer for a well-known gadget site thinks about the Vonage V-Phone. We'll go to this Vonage Forum thread about how one new user set up his Vonage service, as well as a thread that's about wireless router recommendations for the Vonage service. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

According to Florida Public Service Commission numbers published in today's Palm Beach (Fla.) Post, Vonage had 148,936 subscribers in the state of Florida as of September 1 of this year.

UK-based site GadgetSpy is out with a review of the Vonage V-Phone. His review is very favorable.

He calls the V-Phone a small & nice looking device. He also likes the fact that because of self-contained software auto-loaded from the USB, there is no installation involved. He says there is "zero configuration," and because of that, your grandmother could use the V-Phone.

"Overall I think the product is a good one," he writes. "The sound quality was more than adequate; coupled with the ease of use and un-metered 01x calls it should appeal to both the novice user and those who require a little more functionality like voicemail with email notification etc."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

I find that sometimes, it is real informative to review a Vonage Forum thread where the Forum Member doing the posting walks us through a Vonage-related issue he had been experiencing, and how he has solved it. Such a thread is Rough Vonage start, but worked my way through it..... The thread was launched by new Vonage Forum Member nderekn.

"I decided to take the plunge on the Vonage deal at Circuit City. 1 year activation, free equipment (PAP2) after rebate and $200 gift card," nderekn writes.

"I get home from Circuit City and the PAP2 when plugged in doesn't change from Red to Blue on the power light," he adds. "I instantly do a Google (search) and find out that means it's dead.

OK, let us have nderekn tell the rest of his story.

"Hope springs eternal as Circuit City is a 30 minute drive from my house. I call Vonage customer care and I talk to someone in India. I tell him that when I am plugged in (not to router or phone plugged in), the light is Red. Person still tells me to plug PAP2 directly into Cable modem. I told him that RED means dead from what I am reading. Guy finally transfers me to someone at another level and I am on hold and next level person still walks me through same steps. Finally, after 2 more transfers to folks in India, I get someone else who tells me "it's dead".

"I hit the road and head to Circuit City. I notice that there are only 2 boxes left of the PAP2. I also notice the box is grey on the outside and not the orange color. I soon realize I had version 1 of PAP2 and the one I am exchanging it for is version 2 PAP2. I get home 30 minutes later and plug it in and there is a green light. I go to www.vonage.com so I can add this device to my service.

"This is where it gets interesting.....," nderekn adds. And I would agree.

"When prompted for MAC address, I enter the MAC address on the box of the exchanged PAP2 v2. It shows up as invalid. I figure I made a typo and I enter it again and it still shows up as invalid. I call Vonage customer care and speak to someone (from India) and this person tells me that I am not typing it correctly. So I read the letters and numbers to him. He tells me it's invalid. He tells me I am reading the wrong characters for the MAC address. I tell him that's what it says. He finally transfers me to someone else. This person is in the states. Meanwhile, wife is home from work and she's getting mad at me because I put the 2 kids in front of the tv so I can deal with this problem.

"Anyways, I find out that the MAC address is indeed invalid. He looks up in his system to find out that the MAC address is in USE already by an active account. He asks where I got it and I told him at Circuit City. He says he can't do anything for me and I have to get a new device.

"I go to Circuit City after the kids are down (glad they are open til 10pm). I tell them my story. They apologize. I grab the LAST box. I call up Vonage and read the MAC address. They tell me it's valid and so I exchange the invalid MAC address PAP device for this one. I also explain to Circuit City that I have been here 3 times.

"So on top of the instant $200. gift card I got from Circuit City for activating Vonage AND free equipment. Circuit City gave me a $25. iTunes gift card.

"So far after a day, the calls have been clear. I am psyched for the $200 gift card and iTunes gift card."

But to be fair, nderekn has some other thoughts:

"It's still perplexing about the invalid MAC address in how Vonage said the MAC address was in use still," he adds. "So it doesn't make sense to me that someone returned at Circuit City before and Vonage forgot to wipe it out of their system."

We often see some Vonage Forum threads seeking recommendations for equipment to use with Vonage's service. New Vonage Forum Member dbur has started such a thread. He's calling this thread, Newbie Question- Best Wireless Router for me?

"I've had Vonage service for a few months with no complaints," dbur writes. "Currently using a VTech IP8100 phone connected to my cable modem."

Then dbur says he has just bought a new laptop, and would like to have both of his computers connected to the Internet wirelessly. He says he has never set up a wireless network before, and he wants to be sure he owns the right hardware so that he doesn't run into problems getting online or using his Vonage phone.

"What is the best router to purchase in my situation?," asks dbur. "Will I even need the VTech base unit once I purchase a wireless router? I emailed Vonage for suggestions and they recommended the three below, but I've read mixed reviews for all of them.

1. D-Link VWR
2. Linksys WRT54GP2
3. Linksys WRTP54G

Are these my only options?"

Vonage Forum Member raijenkins, who is one of our most active, advice-giving new Members, follows up with a post recommending the Linksys WRTP54G.

Vonage Stock Report

On Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.53 a share, and that was unchanged  from Monday's closing price of $6.53 but then again it was three cents higher than the session low of $6.50 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Tuesday were figured up to be 304,700 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that one of the Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Thursday morning for the newest edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
