Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

November 28, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Because today is a slow news day, we'll go straight to this Vonage Forum thread about Vonage dropped calls, as well as a thread worth going over about some Vonage calls that don't seem to ring. We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Here's an interesting new Vonage Forum thread you might want to check out. It has been started by new Vonage Forum Member LNatali who decided to name it, Linksys RTP300 and speed test.

"We have had ongoing dropped calls with Vonage," LNatali writes. "We recently connected the computer directly to the cable in the basement and received better internet speeds and are hoping the dropped calls end.

"Our speed test readings this evening were below," he adds.  Is there anything more we can do to prevent the calls dropping?

I think it would be useful for us to go over LNatali's speed test results as he has posted them in the thread we are highlighting now:

Download speed: 4657992 bps
Upload speed: 368400 bps
Quality of service: 46 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 44 ms
Average download pause: 3 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 23 ms
Average round trip time to server: 80 ms

Voip test statistics
Jitter: you --> server: 4.2 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 8.4 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.0 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 1.3 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 6
Estimated MOS score: 3.6

Based on those results, fellow Vonage Forum Member noct joins the thread with some helpful observations for LNatali.

"Dropped calls... hmm... is it dropping like hanging up, or is it dropping for about 30 sec, then the audio comes back," noct asks. "If it's the former of the two, I'd say something along your route is messed up, possibly the modem if you go right from the modem to the Vonage. Otherwise if it's the later, i would say that there's a packet loss issue or latency issue. is it dead air audio both ways or just one-way audio? can you hear the other person going hello, hello?

Then noct adds, "if it's the former as well I'd take a look at your modem. i had an issue with my modem since I've been a Comcast customer since `98 back when they were @home, so my modem was very old and didn't have the firmware necessary for the Vonage service... pretty sure it's DOCSIS. this new one is 1.1, so i assume you need 1.1 or higher."

Some interesting information is in a new Vonage Forum thread called, Successful outbound calls, but not always ringing. The thread has been started by new Vonage Forum Member sfoley.

"Sometimes (1 in 6 times?) when I call out, I get no ringing, but the line connects, usually with a few seconds of the other end saying "Hello...hello?". Sometimes the other end will hang up before I hear them and start talking, so this isn't a good thing," sfoley writes.

Then sfoley adds that he also has trouble getting to voicemail sometimes after dialing *123.

"It goes through immediately sometimes, but other times takes up to 4 tries to get to voicemail," he tells us. "Not sure if the two are related, but together they are certainly annoying.

"I haven't sniffed the line to see if the SIP RINGING messages are getting through," sfoley then adds. "I have tried resetting the boxes in the right order and all of that, but no luck. Normally, everything is fine (good voice quality, reasonable connect times, etc.).

Next sfoley asks if he needs to upgrade the firmware, get a new device, or change ports?  He tells us he has had his RT31P2 box for almost 2 years now.

"I've got AT&T DSL (6M/512K) (but had the problem with cable modem too), a DI-724U router in front of my Linksys RT31P2 (FW v1.2, and nothing plugged into the private side of the RT31P2 (just need it to run my phone)," he then adds.

At this point, Steve48 asks sfoley if he has run the Voip speed test as well as testyourvoip (more about that below).

And sfoley has, and writes a follow-up post where he discusses the results of his analysis of both tests.

"I have been running the test off and on for a while now, and it seems to be pretty consistent at 5Mbit downloads, 600+Kbps uploads, low jitter, low delay, etc," sfoley explains. "MOS scores in the 3.5+ range. With cable, results were all over the map and bad, but DSL seems pretty consistent."

Then sfoley mentions that the forums speed test results are:
Download 4,997,656 bps
Upload 638,288 bps
QOS 99%
RTT 71 ms
MaxPause 22 ms

"Network delays sounded likely to me too (especially with my flaky cable link), but I just haven't seen any data to support that thought," then adds.  "If so, I dont think they are on my end as I have had 2 different pipes out of here in the last 30 days, and I saw the problems on both.

"Since it is sporadic, its hard to nail it down. I was thinking the data is all there, but maybe the ATA wasn't handling things correctly," sfoley points out. "No data for that logic either, but it was a thought."

What Info To Post When You Are Having Tech Problems

In the thread I just wrote about called Successful outbound calls, but not always ringing, Vonage Forum Member sfoley ran a testyourvoip test.

A good number of threads and posts on the Vonage Forum are devoted to a technical issue a Forum Member is having with their Vonage service, and questions as to what is causing the problem and how it can be fixed. Being able to provide such solutions is a major reason why we are here.

We have many knowledgeable Vonage Forum members who repeatedly have jumped in and provided advice that has led to solutions. Generally, the best way for them to help you is if you provide as much information as you can about your setup and the nature of the problem you are having.

Back in the summer of 2005,, one of those knowledgeable and always Vonage Forum Members actually started a thread advising what info you should provide when you start a thread that asks for help with a Vonage-related issue. Trowski's thread is called What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage..... I liked his points so much that I have made this thread a "sticky," which means it appears at the top of the Vonage Voip Forum thread list you see when you go to

Here's what Trowski advises that you post:

1. Your location
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
3. Upload and download speeds
4. Modem make and model
5. Type of Vonage adapter used i.e. RT31P2 or PAP2
6. Setup of Network i.e. Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing i.e. dropped calls, choppy audio etc
8. DETAILED results from with a test call to Boston.

"This will help you get the answers/resolution faster if you can post that first....," he writes.

And I added, "that a detailed title is very important, one that does not have the words: "Please", "Help" or "Vonage" in it. And if you haven't already done so, please take a minute to read the forum rules prior to posting for the first time.

Vonage Stock Report

On Monday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.53 a share, and that was unchanged  from Friday's closing price of $6.67 but then again it was higher than the session low of $6.52 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Monday were calculated up to be 401,000 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

The fact that one of the Vonage Forum threads we highlighted today featured a Vonage Forum Member posting the results of his Voip Speed Test gives me another reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Wednesday morning for the newest edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
