Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

In the news, there's this new "call Santa Claus" promotion Vonage announces and starts today.  Then there's this Vonage Forum thread I'd like to highlight about a bad router power light, and another Vonage Forum thread about whether a Vonage-compatible router would work with another service.  We'll also check in on Vonage's stock price. 



In The News

Vonage Santa Promotion Begins Today

Well with the Thanksgiving Holiday now over in the U.S., Santa is preparing for his time of year. And with that in mind, Vonage announced this morning that  throughout the Christmas season children will be able to dial 1-(700) CALLSANTA 1-(700-225-5726) from a Vonage line and hear a recording from Santa Claus. 

After hearing the recorded message, they will be able to leave Santa a message and tell him what they want for Christmas. All the good boys and girls messages will be forwarded to the account holder's email address. This way they can listen in via Vonage's online voicemail feature, so they know what to put under the tree. 

Vonage customers can also visit Santa's website at http://www.vonage.com/santa and post a Vonage jingle as well as play a holiday game.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member Kallure starts a new Vonage Forum thread about an interesting subject you don't read about all that much here on the Vonage Forum but come to think of it this is an important issue.

Kallure calls this thread, Power Light Blinks Red, Error Message, Can't Make Calls.

After specifying his set-up:
Comcast Cable Internet, Motorola Surfboard SB5100, Motorola VT2442 used for VoIP, Linksys WRT54G for wireless Modem > Router > Vonage Motorola, Kallure then writes that
the last verified functioning of the phone was on Wednesday, Nov 22 around 8p.m. "Since then, we've received voicemails, but I can't guarantee the phone has rang and we've been able to receive a call since we haven't been home," he adds.

Then Kallure gets to the symptoms, which he notes were that recorded message saying "Vonage device cannot connect to the Vonage network," and that there was a constantly flashing red power light. 

Kallure then tells us about the solutions he tried, which involved resetting the modem unplugging modem and leaving it for about five minutes and then connecting directly to the modem. But that was tough because he couldn't access the user interface.

"Had issues with initial setup of the whole home network and Vonage," he explains." Had to allow the router to acquire IP by DHCP and assign static IP's to all devices hooked into router (currently, two desktops, one laptop AND the Vonage router). Something with Comcast/Vonage, but whatever it worked. Once static IP was assigned to Vonage router, could never access the GUI (and forgot the static IP assigned to it anyway) - tried to reset to factory default but still no access to Vonage GUI at 192.168.15.1.

"Regardless, all of a sudden, that weird voice is saying it can't connect to the Vonage network and the power light is green right after initial plug in for about fifteen seconds than switches to constant blinking red," he explains.

"Well one thing you can do is access the router page of the vt2442 and do a voice reset, get a Internet Explorer browser and then type in the ip address which is 192.168.15.1," suggests fellow Vonage Forum Member raijenkins. He tells Kallure that doing this will direct you to the router page password and username is router. "

Then go to tools on the dashboard then at the left side there is a button that says restart, just click it and then the device will restart its voice gateway," he adds.

Re-use of Linksys WRTP54G Wireless-G is another interesting new Vonage Forum thread. It has been started by Vonage Forum Member Leo9 and offers answers from Steve48.

"I have a Linksys WRTP54G Wireless-G Broadband Router for Vonage Internet Phone Service," writes Leo9, who says that because he does not need a wireless router, he would like to donate this router to his cousin who uses another Voip provider (SunRocket).

Now here is how I would like to highlight the rest of this thread. I notice that Leo9 asks three questions, which Steve48 answers in sequence. So let's read each question, and then Steve's answer:

Leo9 asks: Can I purchase another less expensive router and have the same Vonage number? How difficult will it be to re-configure the new set up.

Steve48 answers: Yes, you can. It shouldn't be a problem. Just register the new unit with Vonage. You can do that on the web site. Then switch your number to that unit on the website. Naturally, you'll have to set the unit up in your network. Since you handled the WRTP54G, you shouldn't have problems with other Vonage compatible units.

Leo9 asks: Can my existing wireless router be configured for use with other Voip providers?

Stevge48 answers: Technically, yes. Whether the other provider will permit it is up to them. If you were bringing another provider's unit to Vonage, the answer would be no, they won't permit it.

Leo9 asks: Can my cousin use this router only for wireless connection along with her SunRocket gizmo. (just to connect her laptop wirelessly. If this is possible how can she connect it?

Steve48 answers: Yes. She should probably set it up just the way you did in your network. The only difference is that she won't get phone service from it after you switch yours to the new unit. It will act like a plain wireless router. Get the laptop on line and connect the SunRocket gizmo to the laptop.

Vonage Stock Report

On Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.67 a share, and that was unchanged  from Wednesday's closing price of $6.67 but then again it was 12 cents higher than the session low of $6.55 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Friday, when trading was slow because of the four-day Thanksgiving Holiday in the U.S. came to only 135,800 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75
