Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

November 22, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. Because Thanksgiving weekend is coming up in the U.S., this is our Thanksgiving edition, lasting from today through Sunday.

In the news, we'll read about a race sponsored by Vonage in- get this- Hawaii. There's a Vonage Forum thread about routers, and another Vonage Forum thread about wiring issues associated with Vonage's service. We'll check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Reefs Luau by Vonage

Actress Kelly Hu, who is from Hawaii, will host Reef Check Hawaii's Run for the Reefs Luau by Vonage Dec. 11 at the Sheraton Waikiki, the day after the Honolulu Marathon. Kelly Hu will also run the marathon.

Rough life, Kelly.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member robertwdc gets to the point in a new Vonage Forum post he has kicked off and entitled, Motorola VT2142 vs. Linksys PAP2.

"If no router is needed in my situation...and I have both the VT2142 and the PAP2... is either one of them superior to the other?," robertwdc asks. "Or....are they both about the same?"

Then robertwdc explains that the reason he is asking this question is that he has purchased a PAP2 from the Internet before calling Vonage.... but Vonage sent him a free he's  been using that.

"A friend of mine now wants to sign up with Vonage, so I was thinking about switching to my PAP2 (because I don't need a router but he does) and just giving him my VT2142," robertwdc adds, ."but I don't want to do that if I would be taking any sort of step down service and quality wise."

And here's an answer from GraysonPeddie, who happens to be our Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

"Router shields your IP address from the Internet," GraysonPeddie points out. "If you don't have a router, you definitely need one. If your friend has a router and you don't, VT2142 will be for you and you can give PAP2 to your friend.

"But if you do have a router and you friend doesn't, then you will have to contact Vonage about transferring the VT2142's pre-programmed phone number over to your friend," GraysonPeddie adds. "After that, you can just activate PAP2."

Before he ends his post, GraysonPeddie writes this cautionary note to robertwdc.

"Remember: If you don't have a router, your computer will be visible to the Internet," he points out.

Let's go over to the Vonage Hard Wiring-Installation Forum and highlight a thread entitled, no dial tone when going thru an "extension cord" (. The thread has been started by Vonage Forum Member dschrammie.

"Okay, this is probably simple, but something's not working here, dschrammie writes. "I have my computer set up in my basement, therefore that's where my Linksys router (with the phone out) resides. I'd like to be able to have my phone on my main floor, so during a little remodel project that I just finished I put a 4-wire RJ-11 receptacle in the wall in the basement and routed the wire to another 4-wire RJ-11 receptacle on the main floor.

"Note this is the only connection going is, for all intents and purposes, just an extension cord," he explains. "So I made sure that all of my connections are solid/tight and that I have red to red, yellow to yellow, green to green, and black to black.

"I used a standard telephone cable and connected from the "phone out 1" on the router to the basement wall receptacle...then connected the phone to the main floor wall receptacle," dschrammie tells us. "Nothing.

Then he says he brought the phone back down to the basement and connected it directly to the router and it works fine, so he knows that he has a good connection there.

"I spoke with Vonage tech support and they indicated that the set up I have should work, that they believe it must be a problem with my connection from the basement to the main floor...perhaps a crimp problem," adds dschrammie. "I can't say that I have any idea how I would test to see if the problem is with the wall receptacles.

"Any thoughts," he adds. "Anything else you think I should be looking into or considering?"

As he so often does, Steve48 steps up with valuable advice.

"I would have to agree with tech support on this one," he writes." Of course, you're also using two phone cords- one for the phone and one to connect the Vonage box to the RJ11."

Then Steve48 tells dschrammie to make sure that both of those phone cords are good..

" Double check your wiring at both ends," Steve48 recommends, adding that i It's also possible that one of the pairs in the wire dschrammie ran between floors is bad, but the other is good.

"To test that," advises Steve48,  "swap red with yellow and green with black at both ends."

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

I know we got several hundred new members while I was on vacation, so that's several hundred more reasons to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. All you readers in the U.S. have a great and safe Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Check with us Monday morning for the newest edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
