Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

November 21, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll read about what a leading technology gear website thinks of Friday's special Vonage promotion at one of the largest U.S. consumer electronics retailers. There's a Vonage Forum thread about outgoing calls going to the wrong number, and another Vonage Forum thread we'll review, about accessing Vonage voice mail.  We'll check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Leading Website Praises Circuit City's Presario-Vonage Offer

Engadget thinks the one-day deal this Friday at U.S. retailer Circuit City is a good one. On that day only, Circuit City will sell an ordinarily priced $299  Compaq Presario for $99 if you sign up with Vonage for a year of service.

"That's not such a bad deal," Engadget writes about the overall package, "considering (the Presario) comes with a Celeron M 420 CPU, 15-inch screen, DVD and CD burner, 512MB RAM and a 60GB hard drive."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member bcooper has been encountering problems with his outbound Vonage calling. Because some of his calls are not landing where he wants them to be, bcooper opts to start a Vonage Forum thread about this issue. He's given this thread the name, Dialed calls are going to wrong number.

"This problem happened about 5 months ago, but it's really bad now," bcooper writes." The last 5 out of 7 calls I've placed went to the wrong number even though when I look at my account the correct number was dialed."

Then bcooper adds that he's in area code 610 (near Philadelphia) with a ported number.

"Is any one else having similar trouble?," he asks of other Vonage Forum Members. "I did send an email using the 'Contact Support' link on the Forum menu."

Vonage Forum Member emac is the first to respond.

"Call tech support and as to speak with someone in (Tier Two) or the advanced team," he suggests to bcooper. "Tell them that you have a call routing issue, the issue has nothing to do with DTMF if the correct number is showing in your call log."

Next, emac adds his opinion that what bcooper is experiencing is most likely a call routing issue and a ticket needs to be created and sent to the carrier engineering team.

"If a overseas tech support agent states that they will create a ticket for the issue, ask to speak to a supervisor," emac points out.  "If you wait for a ticket to be created by them it will sit for two days before it reaches a queue that can even be escalated to the engineering team that it needs to be with and then you will wait a few more days while they open a ticket with the partner carrier that is currently routing your calls."

"You might want to use the 888 250 1799 number," adds Steve48, who has the second most amount of posts of any Vonage Forum Member. "That should keep you out of the overseas support issue."

Vonage Forum Member oldhawkeye tried to retrieve his Vonage voice mail from the Vonage website, but found he was unable to do this. That's why he's begun a Vonage Forum thread and he has entitled it, Voicemail on website not working.

"The problem is that I can get voicemail via email and *123," writes oldhawkeye, who adds that when he tries to access the same voice mail message through the Vonage site the web site he gets 'No voicemail boxes found for your account'.

"Or if I try to change my pin number, email address or access voicemail using the features tab I get 'Sorry an error has occurred,' " oldhawkeye adds..

Then oldhawkeye mentions that he called tech support a week and a half ago and something was changed but it didn't help. Last Wed.

"I called again and this time they gave me a ticket number and said it would be 24-48 hours. No luck," oldhawkeye writes. "Called tech again on Saturday morning and he said he would check, but never came back on the line after 50 minutes of waiting.

"Anybody else ever have this problem?," oldhawkeye asks. "How was it fixed? Any other ideas?"

Once again, Steve48 steps up.

"You might want to try sending them an Email using the (Vonage Forum) contact page (menu, top left, Vonage Information, Contact Support)," Steve48 suggests. "We're told this gets special attention."

Vonage Stock Report

Can You Digg It?

Digg is a free technology news website that lets you recommend articles you think others would be interested in. Digg, users submit stories for review, but rather than allow an editor to decide which stories go on the homepage, the users do.

According to Digg, "once a story is submitted by a user it is instantly posted in the digg area queue. This is a temporary holding place where stories wait to be promoted to the homepage. To help promote stories to the homepage, simply visit the digg area and digg stories you think are cool. Once a story has received enough diggs, it is instantly promoted. Should the story not receive enough diggs, or is reported, it eventually falls out of the digg area queue. Digg works because a large group of people actively promote good stories to the homepage. We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

I know we got several hundred new members while I was on vacation, so that's several hundred more reasons to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Wednesday morning for the newest edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
