Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

November 17, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll read about a new promotion Circuit City will be doing with Vonage. We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread about routers with the Vonage service. We'll check in on Vonage's stock price. And because this is Friday, we'll cover what the bloggers are saying about Vonage this week.

In The News

Circuit City Will Offer a Compaq-Vonage Promotion

According to a Web site called Black Friday ads, Circuit City plans to offer a Compaq notebook for $299 after rebates, or $99 with rebates and a 12-month subscription to Vonage.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member JulesNC asks a question in a new Vonage Forum thread that he has started and has named, Cannot link Linksys router and Vonage router together..

"I am trying to setup a linksys wireless router to a pre-existing Vonage router setup," JulesNC writes. "The current setup only has a Vonage router, and the internet is a direct line to the computer."

Then JulesNC tells us that although he has tried to reconfigure it according to the directions, (setup wireless router, then connect Vonage through it) however, they are not corresponding.

"Does anyone have some user friendly suggestions?," JulesNC asks.

Fellow Vonage Forum Member GraysonPeddie, who has been Vonage Forum Member of the Week, sees JulesNC question and adds a post with some advice.

"Have you tried to wait between 30 seconds?," GraysonPeddie writes. Then he offers these suggestions to JulesNC:

"Unplug everything that is network-related and try this:

1. Plug in your cable modem to the wall outlet and wait about 30 seconds.

2. Connect the network cable between your modem and Vonage adapter, plug in your Vonage phone adapter and wait about 30 seconds.

3. Last, connect your Linksys router to Vonage phone adapter and then connect your computer to Linksys router."

Now guess what. JulesNC gets some more advice- from another Vonage Forum Member who has been Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

"Unless you have a great wireless router that can handle QoS, I would recommend a different solution," writes mundy5. "Internet -> Vonage router -> wireless switch

And then mundy5 recommends that JulesNC check out his instructions for making a router into a switch. This information is posted at

In The Blogs

We read about 15 Voip and IP-telephony-related Weblogs. Some we read more than others, but we enjoy most of them. Face it, bloggers are opinion-shapers. So today, we are going to give you a round-up of what the blogs we read have said about Vonage this week.

Tom Keating of VoIP Blog writes about some third-party caller ID and Voip call recording products that are compatible with Vonage.

Mark Evans of the Telecom .. and Tech blog (he's from Canada, which is a northern country, and writes more posts about telecom and tech) comments on the Canadian government's decision to de-regulate Voip services traditional phone companies there might want to offer- and the effects of this ruling on Vonage Canada.

Russell Shaw of the ZDNet IP Telephony blog also writes about the Canadian regulatory decision and he also makes a post about major Vonage shareholders seeking to extent their six-month restriction against selling shares.

Paul Kapustka of the Paul Kapustka blog thinks the U.S. elections and the change of Congressional control will have an effect on the discussion in Washington about net neutrality safeguards- which Vonage supports.

Garrett Smith of the Smith On Voip blog writes about business conditions for Voip service providers such as Vonage.

Brian Provost of VoIP News writes a feature called "The 50 Most Influential People in VoIP." Vonage Chairman and Chief Strategist Jeffrey Citron makes the list as a "notably influential executive." "Love him or hate him, Jeff Citron is certainly influential," Provost writes. "While some argue it is impossible to take a Voip company public in the aftermath of the Vonage IPO, those kinds of IPO notions probably wouldn’t be a reality if it were not for the rise of Vonage.

From time to time, we like to feature interesting and entertaining posts from Blogs that are not necessarily about VoIP, but mention Vonage. In this new My Space blog I found last night and it is named funkyjt, blogger Jason writes, "I did hook up a Voip house line, let me know if you need the number - i sent a blanket e-mail out, but I'm sure i missed some of you. i must pay my compliments to Vonage, but boo" (DSL).

Vonage Stock Report

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

I know we got several hundred new members while I was on vacation, so that's several hundred more reasons to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Monday morning for the newest edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our announcement of our Vonage Forum Member of the Week.
