Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

In the news, we will learn about a major move in Canada that will de-regulate VoIP, and what Vonage Canada thinks of this. We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread about a UT Starcom Vonage WiFi phone that seems to be having problems being registered with the Vonage service, and a thread about port forwarding within a Vonage set-up.

Vonage Reacts To New Canada Policy to De-Regulate Voip

Canada's  Industry Minister Maxime Bernier says that Canada's federal government will overrule a Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission decision to regulate VoIP.

Back in May 2005 the CTRC decided to regulate voice-over-Internet-protocol services and put restrictions on Canada's larger telecommunications corporations to allow smaller companies to compete.

"We think barriers to entry in this market are very low; there is no reason to regulate it," Burnier said yesterday. "In a competitive sector, there is no reason to regulate some companies while others can offer the services they want at the prices they want. It is time to have a level playing field from which consumers and small businesses will benefit."

In its original decision, the CRTC said it was concerned the bigger companies, such as Bell and Telus, would sell Voip services as below-cost "loss leaders" and destroy the competition. The federal government asked the commission to reconsider, but the decision was allowed to stand until now.

Vonage Canada, said the news isn't all bad and may actually help the company's business by promoting the technology to more consumers who are still unaware of how it works. "It also raises the awareness that (consumers) have a choice, they don't have to just go to their telephone company or their cable company for their home phone service," Joe Parent, Vonage's vice-president of marketing and business development told the Canadian Press.

Vonage and other smaller companies focused on Voip will always have the most cutting-edge products and services, which will attract consumers, Parent added. "Vonage and other independent companies are the ones that are really driving innovation and innovation is not going to come from the telcos. It never has and is unlikely to start."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member tracers23 is trying to trace down a problem he describes in his new Vonage Forum thread that he has entitled, Failure of new F1000 WiFi phone to register w/closed network.

"I just received my UTStarcom F1000 WiFi phone and to the best of my knowledge configured everything correctly, meaning I followed all the directions given to me in the pamphlet," tracers23 informs us. "I have a closed wireless network, though the phone's MAC address was entered into our system and the WEP key was entered into the phone." 

Then, tracers23 describes his issue.

"The problem I encountered was that the phone would show "connecting to AP address" followed by "registering with AP address" but then shortly come up with "no address available, try again,' " he writes. "This seems odd when a full signal for our network is visible on the phone and yet for some reason is unable to connect! I haven't even been able to get the software for the phone because it can't get passed 'registering.' "

In fellow Vonage Forum Member che's 115th post since joining the Vonage Forum just a month ago, the following possibilities are suggested:

"Tese are some probable causes for that: Port Forwarding may need to be enabled; Device may need to be factory reset; Hotspot may require a Login Script; No internet connection through the router; (or) Invalid MAC."

To pinpoint the problem and save time doing so, che suggests that tracers23 contact Vonage tech support.

In a Vonage Forum thread that new Vonage Forum Member harryjay has entitled, Port Forwarding with Linksys WRT54G and Motorola V2442, he asks some questions I see from time to time here.

"Yesterday, I was trying to setup a Static IP and port forwarding for my torrrents, because it seems that I can download fine, but my upload ratio is not very good," harryjay wrote. "Well, I ended up messing up and not being able to connect to the Internet and had to call Vonage Tech support to troubleshoot my Motorola router." 

So next, harryjay explains what happened next. 

"Well, (the Vonage tech start up PPPoE on the Motorola and made it the first dedicated router, then my Linksys second," harryjay writes. "Well, this does not help me at all because now there is no wireless connection throughout my house. 

"The way he told me to set it up is have my DSL modem connect to the Motorola adapter and then have the adapter hook up to the linksys wireless router, and then have my computer hardwired to the wireless router," harryjay explains further. "But before I messed up the settings, I had it reversed and had the DSL modem going into the wireless router and then into the phone adapter. 

"So now, I want to reverse the process that the Vonage Tech Support guy have me do, so I can obtain my wireless again throughout the house," harryjay adds.

As he does so often and so well, Vonage Forum Member Steve48 offers some great tips.

"Basically, what you're trying to do shouldn't be too hard," Steve48 tells harryjay. "You need to set up the Linksys to establish the connection that the Motorola is establishing now. Plug your computer into a LAN port on the Motorola and access its admin page." 

Then Steve48 advises harryjay that he should make some careful notes about how the WAN (internet) side of the Motorola is set up. 

"Then change its WAN setup to DHCP. Power down and remove the Motorola from the setup, plugging your modem into the WAN port of the Linksys," Steve48 adds. "Plug your computer into a LAN port on the Linksys and configure the WAN side of the Linksys the way the Motorola used to be, using your notes." 

When harryjay completes those steps, Steve48 writes that harryjay should then reboot and at that point harryjay should have Internet access via the Linksys. 

"Now plug the WAN port of the Motorola into a LAN port on the Linksys, reboot, and you should have phone service," Steve48 adds.

And the good thing about this thread is that harryjay wrote a follow-up post that he did all these things Steve48 suggested, and everything is working now.

Vonage Stock Report

On Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.73 a share, which was an increase of 17 cents (+2.59)  from Tuesday's closing price of $6.56 as well as 22 cents higher than the session low of $6.51 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Tuesday were calculated as 404,300 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

I know we got several hundred new members while I was on vacation, so that's several hundred more reasons to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.
