Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

November 15, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll catch up on a major move yesterday by several of Vonage's key investors. We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread about Vonage router-IP address connectivity problems, and then there's this thread about what sounds like latency-related call quality issues.

In The News

Vonage Revises Investor's Rights Agreement

Vonage announced yesterday that it has secured signatures to amend the mandatory registration provisions set forth in the most recent Investors' Rights Agreement between Vonage and certain of its stockholders. The stockholders that consented to the amendment hold approximately 115 million outstanding shares covered by the agreement.

The amendment would have required the company to register these stockholder's stock with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The registration of shares is necessary for an investor to be able to sell them on the open market.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

One of the most eye-catching new Vonage Forum thread titles I've seen in awhile is Two green blinks of death. This thread was started last night by new Vonage Forum Member SHOWHAT9.

"I have been happily cruisin' along with Vonage for almost a year. New Home office furniture arrives. I have to disconnect all my home computer stuff to relocate the modems/vonage router. Plug everything back up (I have simple one pc setup) Vonage router will not shake hands with my IP address," SHOWHAT9 reports.

"I have the VT 1000v Voice Terminal, cable modem and PC. That's it. No new splitters/cables added since initial installation that went flawlessly. Now I have the two blinking green lights of death," he points out.

Then he adds that Vonage customer service doesn't seem to grasp the fact that he can't communicate with his ISP (Charter Cable).

"If I have the VT1000v in line," I can not access the router to change the ip address. This is now going on three weeks and I am less then impressed with what they are telling me to do - BECAUSE NONE OF IT WORKS IF I CAN'T ACCESS THE INTERNET WITH THEIR ROUTER IN THE LOOP!!!!

Fellow Vonage Forum Member holler has some advice for SHOWHAT9.

"Did you try doing a soft reset?," holler asks SHOWHAT9. "One can login to MTA using the web interface. ' ' make the connections as before and use the comp to go this site, which is MTAs web interface, there will be an option called restore factory settings.

"Just click and wait to see if the green light gets solid. if it doesn't for some 5 mins, do a power cycle again and check," holler suggests.

SHOWHAT9 came back and said he will try doing that.

Because Vonage Forum Member nola_style has been experiencing what sounds like voice delays on Vonage calls, he decided to establish a thread about the issue. He's named this thread calls while using Vonage sounds like it is "in delay.

"Has anyone else had this happen while on a *regular* phone call using Vonage....when speaking on the phone, there seems to be some sort of "delay" or "lag" between the time I speak into the phone and when the person on the other end actually hears/receives what I have said, and vice-versa," nola_style writes.

"Has anyone else noticed this and is there anything I can do to correct/eliminate this delay," nola_style asks, "as it is extremely annoying to those I am speaking with on the phone -- as well as it is annoying to myself (as though I am hearing myself "in delay", similar to how it sounds on talk radio)."

"Yes, people sometimes report this problem," Steve48 replies.

"Actually, I've seen two different kinds of report," he points out further. "In one, the delay only happens when you place a call and only on the first exchange. The RTP300 adapter had this problem, but it was largely (not completely) cleared up with firmware fixes.

"The other problem," he adds, "occurs throughout the call. As far as I can see, this is caused by network issues which may or may not be something Vonage can address."

"What you are experiencing is a latency problem with the IP traffic between you and the media gateway that connects the Voip to POTS (assuming your calls are to a POTS line and not another Voip user)," explains fellow Vonage Forum Member DMS1

"Does the problem occur on both incoming and outgoing calls?," he asks nola_style. "If so then it is likely to be something local to you (your adapter or more likely your Internet connection) since incoming and outgoing calls will use different media gateways in different locations, so it is unlikely to be a problem with them.

DMS1 thinks the latency could be a "genuine" packet delay, "such as that caused by using a satellite ISP, or it could be introduced by adaptive jitter buffering in your adapter and the media gateway," he writes.

"This is a technique that will delay received data to allow delayed packets to catch up, rather than dropping packets which causes moments of silence," DNS1 points out. "If there is too much jitter (change in latency from packet to packet), or many dropped packets then the buffering may delay the data too long and cause the effect you are seeing. Again, this is probably an issue with your ISP."

And after DMS1 offers a post with advice, nola_style "style" is to come back with another post that offers additional explanations.

"Well, just a little FYI, the "lag" or "delay" effect that I am experiencing seems to happen any time of day, and on outgoing as well as incoming calls," he writes. "Sometimes the delay is not as bad as others, but there always is one. I am not connected to or speaking with others using VoIP. I have the Voip phone setup by Vonage, and those on the other end of the phone call are POTS.

"This could be a problem, as stated in the last reply, with (possibly) my ISP, which in this case is Charter," he writes.

But then a related thought occurs to nola_style, who adds this thought to this same post.

"Oh, the other thing I just thought of, and I do not believe this has to do necessarily with my ISP, but I do notice that when I am surfing the Internet, downloading, what-have-you, and speaking on the phone simultaneously, I notice there is a large "breaking up" of the signal...the voices are all garbled, or they just drop out all together," he writes. "Since I first noticed this phenomenon, I have ceased any internet activity while using my Voip phone. Does this sound familiar, and is there anything in the works that Vonage could do to improve this?"

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

I know we got several hundred new members while I was on vacation, so that's several hundred more reasons to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Thursday morning for the newest edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest!!
