Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

November 14, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll learn where you can listed to some comments about Vonage's future from the exec who started it all, Vonage Founder, Chairman and Chief Strategist Jeffrey Citron.  We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread about the merits of cable vs. DSL for a broadband connection that uses the Vonage service, as well as a thread from a Vonage Forum Member who is asking whether it is feasible to have more than one Voip service at a time.

In The News

On The Vonage Voip Forum

I guess you'd have to say that new Vonage Forum Member wisedud is a "wise dude" for starting a new Vonage Forum thread that asks a very important question.

He has named this thread, VoIP works better with ADSL vs. Cable @ same speed?

Hey Forum Members," wisedud writes. "Let me know what do you think about the audio connection in a Vonage line... does it work better on ADSL vs. Cable Internet."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member GraysonPeddie, who has been Vonage Forum Member of the Week, offers a response that is both helpful and thorough.

"That depends on two factors," GraysonPeddie writes.

"For DSL, how far are you from a phone company? The far away you're from the phone company, the slower the DSL speed will be. Note that phone companies may already have installed some kind of a box which could help bring up the speed so that neighbors far away from a phone company will be able to experience the speed people get when they're close to a phone company."

"For cable modem," he adds, "are there any neighbors who have cable modem? As more neighbors use the cable modem, yours may slow down a bit. So you're sharing the connection with the others using a cable modem.

Then GraysonPeddie adds that he doesn't have DSL "but I can tell you that I have no problems with the connection to Voip (Vonage) through cable modem. I just have my Motorola VT2142 connected to the cable modem and the router (D-Link DI-524) connected to the Motorola VT2142."

Now here is another interesting question, posed in a thread that new Vonage Forum Member intel4004 has decided to name, Can I use two Voip companies at the same time?

"I have 2 two phone adapters daisy chained together, i.e.: modem -> Grandstream ATA -> Motorola VT1005V ATA -> PC," inten4004 explains. "The Motorola ATA is connected to Vonage while the Grandstream is connected to another Voip service."

Then he says that while he can hear the Vonage dial tone he cannot dial out to make a connection.

"Vonage works perfectly when the Grandstream ATA is removed," he points out. "Can someone please advise where the hardware conflicts are? And how can I fix it?"

Once again, GraysonPeddie is up with some suggestions. He says that intel4004 might want to get a router and:

  • Connect Grandstream ATA to Port 1,
  • Connect Motorola VT1005 ATA to Port 2
  • Connect PC to Port 3.

"Enable QoS for Port 1 and 2," states GraysonPeddie. He then makes a router recommendation to his fellow Vonage Forum Member intel4004.

"The router I would like to recommend (since I got connection dropouts and DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) problems with D-Link DI-524) is Linksys WRT54G," GraysonPeddie adds.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

I know we got several hundred new members while I was on vacation, so that's several hundred more reasons to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us Wednesday morning for the newest edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest!!
