Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, November 3 - 12, 2006, The Vacation Edition

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

November 3, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Hey, I'm going on a much needed vacation! That's why I am calling this edition of the Digest our Vacation Edition. I'll be back November 13.

In the news, we'll find out how a champion hurdler sponsored by Vonage is doing. We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread about changing phone adapters that are being used with the Vonage service.  And because this is Friday, we'll see what some bloggers have been writing about Vonage this week.

In The News

Vonage-sponsored hurdler Allan Scott, 24,  says he is determined to make up for lost time after injury curtailed his 2006 season. The Scottish record holder for the 60 meter hurdles, Scott has spent much of the year sidelined through back trouble.

Allan’s injury has now cleared up allowing him to return to full training and he is determined to make up for lost time. “I’ve been working for the last six or seven weeks on really getting myself in good shape ahead of the Indoor season which is just around the corner," Allan tells Martin Stirling of the Lanarkshire East Kilbride News  "I’m starting this year with one aim and that is to put absolutely everything into my athletics and training."

"I’ll be hurdling from now on through to the start of the indoor season and if I look after my body and work with my physio to ensure I stay fit and healthy, I don’t see any reason why 2007 can’t be the year when I kick on to that next level."

Scott added that "sponsorships such as the one I have with telecoms company Vonage are invaluable, with or without it I would still be here doing this. I've wanted to do this since I started hurdling when I was 12 and I would still try and train full-time.

“But," Scott added about Vonage's sponsorship,  it allows me to relax and be a full-time athlete.

"If things go according to plan, then I should be reaching my peak in 2012 and potentially making my final bow at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014 so there are huge incentives out there.”

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member wparkey parks a new thread on the Vonage Forum. He is calling this thread, How to go about replacing phone adapter with another brand.

I" want to replace my original CISCO ATA-186 phone adapter with the Linksys PAP2," wparkey writes. "Once I buy the PAP2 let's say at BestBuy, how do I go about informing Vonage of the new equipment and the retirement of the old equipment? If I disconnect the ATA-186 and then plug in the PAP2, what steps are necessary to get me back up and running?"

Then wparkey points out he is one of the original Vonage early adopters and still has the original equipment which already has a failed Phone port #1 which Vonage switched me over to Port #2 several years ago.

Fellow Vonage Forum Member vonalink offers an answer.

"You can do this all yourself at the Vonage website," vonalink tells wparkey. "From the home page, click on Retail Activation."

And then vonalink adds that he has done this himself by adding a V-phone to his account.

"I only have 1 phone #. After the additional device is added to my account," vonalink tells us, " I can login (to) Vonage, click on Add-ons > Move a Number, to specify which device to use for the number."

In The Blogs

We read about 15 Voip and IP-telephony-related Weblogs. Some we read more than others, but we enjoy most of them.  So today, we are going to give you a round-up of what the blogs we read have said about Vonage this week.

Here's what the Voip bloggers have been writing about:

Rich Tehrani of VoIP Blog likes Vonage's new free traffic reports and "call before you dig" service offerings.

Alec Saunders of Alec Saunders .LOG offers some quick commentary on Vonage's third quarter earnings, which were released earlier this week.

Om Malik of Om Malik's Broadband Blog also offers some commentary on Vonage's earnings..

Mark Evans of the Telecom .. and Tech blog (he's from Canada, which is a northern country, and writes more posts about telecom and tech) also focuses on Vonage's earnings reports.

Russell Shaw of the ZDNet IP Telephony blog runs a reader poll in which he asks readers of his blog what they see as the most likely outcome for Vonage in the future..

PhoneBoy of the PhoneBoy blog makes some interesting suggestions about how Vonage could assign phone numbers, and dialing features/technology associated with those numbers.

Ted Wallingford of Signal To Noise offers his mixed take on Vonage's future.

Garrett Smith of the Smith On Voip writes about Vonage's new "811" call before you dig service.

From time to time, we like to feature interesting and entertaining posts from Blogs that are not necessarily about VoIP, but mention Vonage. In this new My blog I had found earlier this week and it is called Nice Ideas, blogger XooX writes, "The Vonage website gives a nice understanding of how VOIP(Voice over Internet Protocol) works. This is an amazingly cheap way to call internationally. To set up Voip using the Vonage service, you need a high speed internet connection. There is very little of set up to be done. You need to plug in your phone adapter to the high speed internet connection. A basic router may be required. With this set up, you can use any standard telephone instrument to start calling. The greatest benefit of using Voip is the dirt cheap international call rates. The Vonage package also offers live customer, technical and online support. I believe, conventional landline international calls are already dead. It is going to be Voip all the way."

Vonage Stock Report

On Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.50 a share, which was unchanged from Wednesday's closing price of $6.50 a share but then again it was 6 cents higher than the session low of $6.44 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Thursday came out to be 432,600 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

Vonage Forum Reaches 31 Million Page Views

Early Wednesday evening, the Vonage Forum got our 31 millionth page view since we started up in March, 2003. Since we hit the 30 million mark only on October 16, that means it took us just 16 days to get another million page views. That's more than 60,000 page views a day!

Every time you click on a Vonage Forum page, that's another page view. So let's see how quickly we can get to 32 million!

Check Out Our New Vonage Forum Toolbar

I know many of you are very upbeat about the Vonage Forum Toolbar.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar can provide you with easy desktop access to your Vonage Voicemail as well as total minutes used during your billing period, It works for all Vonage.com, Vonage.ca and Vonage.uk users.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar works with Internet Explorer and Firefox.

If you have questions, or comments, I've made a NEW Vonage Forum Toolbar Thread. Here's the direct link.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Hey, we're headed off to vacation. We will return on November 13.
