Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

November 1, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll see about the effect Vonage's latest quarterly results, which were reported yesterday, had with Vonage's shareholders. Then we'll learn about a new element in an ongoing promotional campaign Vonage is doing with the NBA's New Jersey Nets. We'll go over Vonage Forum threads about the Vonage WiFi phone, and another thread from a Vonage customer who thinks that someone might have hacked his Vonage number to make unauthorized calls showing that they came from that number.

In The News

Vonage Stock Dips After Quarterly Earnings Report

When Vonage stock goes up or down by more than 5% in a day, that's news enough to move those details from our Vonage Stock Report to our main news section.

Wednesday was one of those days.

On Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $6.88 a share, which was a decline of 57 cents (and also down 7.65%) from Monday's closing price of $7.45 a share but then again it was 7 cents higher than the session low of $6.81 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Tuesday reached the total of 2, 032,400 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

Vonage today announced that it will be the title sponsor of the NBA New Jersey Nets' media room at the Continental Airlines Arena and the
Nets Practice facility. Members of the media who cover the Nets will receive Vonage's V-Phone.

"This is a slam-dunk for Vonage. We are excited to be outfitting the press covering our home-state's team with our V-Phone," stated Mike Snyder,
CEO of Vonage Holdings Corp. "This is a great opportunity for us to highlight how well Vonage's V-Phone works for people who are on the go. We
look forward to supporting the Nets and their press corps around the nation with our feature-rich broadband phone service."

Vonage says the press room sponsorship includes signage, banners, and a central area for Vonage representatives to assist the press in getting started with
the service. To connect all branding surrounding the media, Vonage will also have presence on the "Press Row" area.

This move is Vonage's latest extension of its role as Presenting Sponsor of Nets Basketball through 2009.

Other aspects of this campaign include a billboard in Times Square, outdoor advertising throughout Northern New Jersey and signage at various train stations
throughout the state.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member Xavier has a question about the Vonage WiFi phone. He has started a new Vonage Forum thread to ask this question in. He has entitled the thread, WiFi phone and band saver feature.

"I use a F1000 at work and sometimes the sound is broken," Xavier writes. "Will adjusting my band saver on the features page to the highest quality help me? Will I have to do it every time change wifi locations?"

An answer is supplied in a follow-up post, which has been made by fellow Vonage Forum Member howiewifi.

"That depends on the bandwidth available," howiewifi writes to Xavier. I would recommend leaving the phone at the high bandwidth setting 'all the time.'"

Then howiewifi recommends to Xavier that if he is in a place with low bandwidth availability (using testyourvoip or other sites), then he would need to change the bandwidth saver each time he changes places.

"In most cases, either the high setting or low setting are best," howiewifi emphasizes. "There are VERY few cases where the middle setting does any good (either you have enough bandwidth for the full rate - or you don't)."

Because Vonage Forum Member coolest is not "cool" with the possibility that someone may have hacked his Vonage phone number, he's started a Vonage Forum thread that he has named, Hacks for Vonage.

"I am a Vonage customer and I just got a call from someone claiming that I called them on their cell phone twice in the last 15 minutes," coolest writes. "I had not called anyone for the last 4 hours and I was surprised that they would make such a claim."

Then coolest adds that he has heard about a Voip hack that allows people to call other people long distance on their land lines for free. "I was wondering if anyone is abusing my Vonage account to make long distance calls," he adds.

Vonage Forum Member sirkism is first up with his thoughts.

"First, i would check your call logs on the web account to see if there has been any outbound calls to those people claiming to have gotten a call from the number," he writes.

"Second, just confirm the number that is calling them, if it is, then you should call Vonage to make sure that the number really belongs to the Vonage service," he recommends. "There are plenty of websites that offer a "spoof caller ID" service where they can put any number to show up on the caller ID's outbound calls."

Next, fellow Vonage Forum Member doxter101- who has been very active offering valuable advice even though he just joined the Vonage Forum yesterday- presents an important reminder.

"Everything should be on your web account," doxter101 writes. "You can actually view every call that you made, and if it is logged in there, ask somebody in your household (if they) made the call."

And then coolest comes back with a follow-up post.

"I have already called Vonage and also checked my account but there is nothing in the records," coolest writes. "The guy who called back did say that the calls came from my Vonage number. There is only one phone that is hooked up to the Vonage service and no one else could have made the call."

"The Vonage tech said that the number spoofing was probably the cause," adds coolest, who then writes that he will wait and see if it happens again."

What Info To Post When You Are Having Tech Problems

In the thread I just wrote about called WiFi phone and bandsaver feature, Vonage Forum Member howiewifi suggested that Xavier, who began the thread, run a testyourvoip test. In fact, a good number of threads and posts on the Vonage Forum are devoted to a technical issue a Forum Member is having with their Vonage service, and questions as to what is causing the problem and how it can be fixed. Being able to provide such solutions is a major reason why we are here.

We have many knowledgeable Vonage Forum members who repeatedly have jumped in and provided advice that has led to solutions. Generally, the best way for them to help you is if you provide as much information as you can about your setup and the nature of the problem you are having.

This past summer, one of those knowledgeable and always Vonage Forum Members actually started a thread advising what info you should provide when you start a thread that asks for help with a Vonage-related issue. Trowski's thread is called What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage..... I liked his points so much that I have made this thread a "sticky," which means it appears at the top of the Vonage Voip Forum thread list you see when you go to

Here's what Trowski advises that you post:

1. Your location
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
3. Upload and download speeds
4. Modem make and model
5. Type of Vonage adapter used i.e. RT31P2 or PAP2
6. Setup of Network i.e. Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing i.e. dropped calls, choppy audio etc
8. DETAILED results from with a test call to Boston.

"This will help you get the answers/resolution faster if you can post that first....," he writes.

And I added, "that a detailed title is very important, one that does not have the words: "Please", "Help" or "Vonage" in it. And if you haven't already done so, please take a minute to read the forum rules prior to posting for the first time.

Happy "Anniversary," NateHoy!

This morning, I noticed that NateHoy, who is one of our most helpful and active members of the Vonage Forum, joined up on November 1, 2005. That, of course, was a year ago to this very day. In that time span, Nate has helped so many Forum Members by means of his nearly 1,800 posts (third among all of you Members). He also has written numerous tutorials about Vonage, which we are happy to link to from the Forum. So let us all thank Nate for all his much-appreciated posts. And speaking of, if you want to browse through a sampling of some of Nate's more recent posts, just click here.

Check Out Our New Vonage Forum Toolbar

I know many of you are very upbeat about the Vonage Forum Toolbar.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar can provide you with easy desktop access to your Vonage Voicemail as well as total minutes used during your billing period, It works for all, and users.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar works with Internet Explorer and Firefox.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Thursday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
