Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 31, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll read about Vonage's latest quarterly earnings, reports about which were just released this morning. We'll go over Vonage Forum threads about returning a bad router, and then about a Vonage connection issue and we'll check in on Vonage's stock price.

Vonage Releases Quarterly Earnings Numbers

Vonage today announced results for the quarter ended September 30, 2006.

Revenue for the quarter was a record $161 million, up 118% from the year-ago quarter.

Vonage added nearly one million net subscriber lines over the past twelve months, including 204,591 in the third quarter. This marks the seventh
consecutive quarter of more than 200,000 net subscriber line additions. Vonage finished the quarter with 2,057,844 lines in service, an increase of 11%
sequentially and 94% above the year-ago level.

Mike Snyder, Vonage CEO, said, "Our results this quarter provide further evidence of our continued progress toward achieving profitability. For the
first time in Vonage's history, GAAP net loss narrowed year-over-year. In addition, for the second consecutive quarter, we narrowed our net loss by
aggressively managing direct costs and achieving scale benefits due to growth in our subscriber base. Direct margin  percentage improved to a record 64% and adjusted loss from operations(1) declined 12% from the prior quarter even as we continued to invest in customer care and marketing to achieve strong

"Over the recent months, our highest priority has been to achieve meaningful and sustainable improvements in customer care," Snyder added. We dedicated
significant financial and human resources to enhancing processes, adding staff and improving training methodologies. As a result, we have seen marked
improvements in most service metrics, including call abandonment rates, first call resolution and overall customer satisfaction. While churn was higher in
the third quarter, as anticipated, improvements in customer care performance led to an improvement in churn to 2.4% for the month of September."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

When it comes to the router she was using with her Vonage service, Vonage Forum Member dangergirl had a kind of "dangerous" experience. I guess that's why she chose to open a Vonage Forum thread to describe this issue and maybe get some answers. She's named this thread Returning dead Linksys RT31P2.

"After an hour on the phone with bottom level tech support, the upper level tech dude told me what I already knew: my 2 year old router is toast," writes dangergirl, whose real first name is Donna. He agreed to replace it. In the email that has the RMA, it says they will make deductions if I don't return it in the original box and include all the cables, manuals etc. etc.

" How serious are they about this?," dangergirl adds. "I don't have much of that stuff..."

"I can't speak for their seriousness of wanting all the original packaging," writes Vonage Forum Member mundy5. What I am surprised is that these only have a 1 yr warranty and then they no longer accept returns (you said that your router is 2yr old right?). So I am surprised that they even gave you an RMA.

"Keep us posted on what happens," he tells dangergirl to do.

Steve48, our current Vonage Forum Member of the Week, is next.

"When my RTP300 croaked, I returned it with the user's manual and power pack," he writes. "I didn't have the original box, and I didn't think to drop the cables in the package. They didn't complain.

"No guarantees, of course, but that's my experience," adds Steve48.

I noticed that Vonage Forum Member chinka01 has started a thread that is named, After phone call you hang up and phone rings.

"Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen with Vonage," chinka01 writes. "After hanging up the phone after a call my phone rings, I pick up the reciever only to hear myself saying hello like the line is recording and playing back what I say...Has anyone had this happen...?"

Then chinka01 tells us a bit about his set-up:

"I am running from wall jack ---> DSL modem ---> PAP2 --->the Linksys Router WRT54G --> to network," he writes.

Several Vonage Forum Members contribute their insights.

"I've had this happen to me from time to time, but the only times I've seen it is when I call in to my companies voicemail system," writes butterman. "When it rings and I pick up I hear the automated attendant giving me options.

Then butterman adds that what he has done to avoid this is to make sure he exit the menu system before hanging up.

"This seems to have addressed the issue for me," butterman mentions. "If you are having this issue with regular calls, I'm not sure what to say because I have not had that problem."

"Basically the problem here is with the SIP messages," fellow Vonage Forum Member dheiy follows up in a post. "There's no bye message on your device that's why this thing happened."

And then, just yesterday afternoon, Vonage Forum Member mundy5 came up with a very helpful answer.

"This has happened to me a number of times," mundy5 writes, adding it is because "when I hang up sometimes, I tap my flash and the phone thinks that I am making a conference call or using the 2nd line. As a result, the first line is still active.

"So when I hang up, it calls me back to tell me that my first line is still active," mundy5 explains further.

Then mundy5 explains that he resolved the issue by making sure that when he hangs up from a Vonage call,  that he keep the hangs up lever depressed for longer than a second.

"This then hangs up the first call and everything works well," mundy5 points out.

Check Out Our Revised Vonage V-Phone and Softphone Forum

Many of you are probably already familiar with our Vonage Softphone Forum. That's where we cover Vonage's very popular SoftPhone service which you can access directly from your PC's screen. This is section of the Vonage Forum with a linked list of threads with questions and solutions about Vonage SoftPhone.

But now I am pleased to announce that I've added discussions and threads about the Vonage V-Phone- which when you insert it into a USB, can turn any PC or laptop into a fully functional Vonage phone. Because I thought the Softphone Forum would be a natural place to include V-Phone threads,  I decided to rename this forum, the Vonage V-Phone and Softphone Forum. It's a very popular forum, with more than 1,000 posts! Check it out. Here's the direct link.

Check Out Our New Vonage Forum Toolbar

I know many of you are very upbeat about the Vonage Forum Toolbar.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar can provide you with easy desktop access to your Vonage Voicemail as well as total minutes used during your billing period, It works for all, and users.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar works with Internet Explorer and Firefox.

If you have questions, or comments, I've made a NEW Vonage Forum Toolbar Thread. Here's the direct link.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Wednesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
