Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 30, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. You did turn your clocks back last night, right?

In the news, we'll learn about a new free service Vonage is offering that lets you know if it is safe to dig underground in your area. We'll go over two Vonage Forum threads about different types of router issues. We'll check in on Vonage's stock price. And this is Monday, which is the day we meet our new Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

In The News

Can You "Dig It?" Vonage Offers 811 "Safe To Dig" Service

Vonage has just announced this morning that its customers can now dial 811 from their Vonage phones, at no charge, to find out whether it is safe to dig in certain areas. Vonage subscribers, who are adding an addition to their home, installing a new pool, or digging any type of ditch, can dial 811 and be connected to one call center, which will assist in their efforts to dig safely.

"Vonage is pleased to offer its customers the convenience of 811 dialing to help ensure their excavation will be safe," say Michael Tribolet, president of Vonage America Inc. "This is just another example of Vonage answering its customer's needs."

Here's how this works, according to Vonage.

When subscribers dial 811, their call is routed from Vonage's network to a local one call center. The center then notifies the local utility companies in the area to mark the approximate location of their underground utilities, helping Vonage customers avoid damaging underground utilities such as pipes or cables when starting to dig.

Vonage says that people should generally call 3 days before they are planning to dig to give the utility companies ample time to mark the approximate line locations. It is an individual's responsibility to wait the required time for underground utilities to be located and marked and each individual should dig with care to avoid damaging underground facilities.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member doncaruana has started a Vonage Forum thread which he has entitled, Linksys RTP300 vs. Motorola VT2142/2442.

"I used to have no problems dialing conference lines and such, went on vacation and came back (about two weeks ago) and now I can no longer connect to an AT&T hosted conference line.

I've spent a fair amount of time with tier2 (first guy seemed to know a lot more than the second guy though) and the first guy got it working sort of intermittently on my old RT31P2," doncaruana writes. "But he sent me a replacement RTP300. Which made things worse.

Then doncaruana adds that the second guy tried to change things but seemed over his head.

"He ended up changing the way my phone rings and now I can't access the conference line at all (only seems to be this one that's an issue - I've tried a couple of other conference lines, CCs, etc)," doncaruana adds.

"Unfortunately I can't live with this - I gotta earn a living and this is a big part of it," states doncaruana. "While I plan to call and try tier 2 again, I got to wondering if anyone can tell me if the Motorola vt2142 might be a better option for me. I only need one ethernet port (and will never need more than one in the router) so either the 2142 or 2442 would work for me."

Then, after giving us this background, doncaruana asks his two specific questions:

So, two questions:

"Are DTMF tones any better/worse/same in VT2142 vs. RTP 300??
"Does the VT2142/VT2442 perform in any way better or worse than the RTP 300?"

Responding is Vonage Forum Member Steve48.

"I started with an RTP300, which was killed by lightning, and I'm now running a VT2442," writes Steve48, who adds that he can't tell any difference except the VT may have slightly more hiss.

"Unfortunately, I have no way to evaluate DTMF tones, but I haven't had any problems," he adds, then asking doncaruana if he is able to connect to the problem numbers if you use something like click-to-call?

Because new Vonage Forum Member ckreiter has had difficulty connecting to Vonage's services, he decided to establish a Vonage Forum thread about this issue. He is calling this new thread, Phone can not register with the Vonage network

"I've had Vonage since March '06 with generally no problems. I made a call earlier today fine, then, I picked up the phone to make another call and I'm getting the message 'This phone cannot register with the Vonage Network,' " ckreiter writes.

"I've unplugged and re-powered the Vonage router," he adds. "I haven't done my network router yet as I have active users on the internet. Speed test is showing excellent bandwidth."

Then ckreiter added that he's emailed Vonage support with no response yet.

Turns out ckreiter was able to fix this issue.

He writes a follow-up post in which he said that he powered off/on everything, including his cable modem, network router and Vonage router. "After everything came back online," ckreiter informs us, "the phones were working fine."

In case you are wondering why this occurred, Vonage Forum Member GraysonPeddie has a pretty good idea. In fact, he made a post in that very same thread about what he thinks has been going on.

"You have to wait between 30 seconds between each device you plugged in on order," GraysonPeddie writes. "For example:

Plugged in cable modem...
Waited 30 seconds...
Plugged in router...
Waited 30 seconds...
Plugged in second router to port 1...
Plugged in Vonage phone adapter to port 2...
Waited 30 seconds...

"As you can see," GraysonPeddie points out, " routers and modems don't acquire an IP address (within) 1 millisecond."

Steve48 Is Our Vonage Forum Member of the Week

Hey, no surprise here. If there was ever a definition of "above and beyond the call of duty" insofar as the Vonage Forums are concerned,  you would have to give Steve48 that honor. He's always around and willing to lend his expertise to a wide range of questions we see here on the Vonage Forum. So, Steve48, here is our Vonage Forum Member of the Week award again. Check Out Our Revised Vonage V-Phone and Softphone Forum

Many of you are probably already familiar with our Vonage Softphone Forum. That's where we cover Vonage's very popular SoftPhone service which you can access directly from your PC's screen. This is section of the Vonage Forum with a linked list of threads with questions and solutions about Vonage SoftPhone.

But now I am pleased to announce that I've added discussions and threads about the Vonage V-Phone- which when you insert it into a USB, can turn any PC or laptop into a fully functional Vonage phone. Because I thought the Softphone Forum would be a natural place to include V-Phone threads,  I decided to rename this forum, the Vonage V-Phone and Softphone Forum. It's a very popular forum, with more than 1,000 posts! Check it out. Here's the direct link.

Check Out Our New Vonage Forum Toolbar

I know many of you are very upbeat about the Vonage Forum Toolbar.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar can provide you with easy desktop access to your Vonage Voicemail as well as total minutes used during your billing period, It works for all, and users.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar works with Internet Explorer and Firefox.

If you have questions, or comments, I've made a NEW Vonage Forum Toolbar Thread. Here's the direct link.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Tuesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular Vonage Forum Member of the Week feature!!
