Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

In the news, we'll read portions of a review in the New York Times about Vonage-compatible devices.  We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread about a firewall-related issue. We'll check in on Vonage's stock price. And this is Friday, which is the day we'll find out what bloggers have been saying about Vonage.

In The News

In yesterday's New York Times, writer Roy Furchgott reviewed several devices, including the Vonage-compatible UT Starcom and the VTech IP8100-2.

"The UT Starcom phone couldn’t sign onto my network until the software was updated, but couldn’t be updated until it was signed onto my network," Furchgott writes. "A second UT Starcom phone with the newer software connected easily."

Then Furchgott got around to the VTech IP 8100-2.

"Much simpler to connect was the VTech IP8100-2 for Vonage. This phone comes with a base station that plugs directly into your modem or router and then connects wirelessly to two portable handsets," Furchgott wrote. "Again because the base bypasses the computer, it will work with any system.

"Once the base was connected, the phones recognized the network, and calls were easily placed," he writes. One person I called said the phone sounded a tad 'tinny,' but it was clear enough for her to hear a vacuum cleaner running in the background.

The phones aren’t cheap; the VTech IP8100-2 lists for $150. But you can save money if you use cordless phones that you already own — with the help of an adapter that turns your existing phones into a Voip set.

And then Furchgott turned his attention to adapters.

"These adapters are generally easy to connect," he wrote, suggesting "the Linksys PAP2 ($60), which attaches directly to your router and can operate when your computer is off. It can support any 2.4- or 5.8-gigahertz cordless phone," he wrote, "and can be used to connect to a number of different providers."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Sometimes on the Vonage Forum we get threads in which a Vonage Forum Member asks a question, but then follows up with another post in which he writes that he has found the problem. This shows consideration, because if you have solved the problem, it lets your fellow Vonage Forum Members go on to the next thread that they might like to try and render assistance with.

I write this because of what is going on with this new Vonage Forum thread entitled PAP2 behind a firewall - port forwarding (?). This thread was started by new Vonage Forum Member TheDude.

"Got a PAP2, In USA, Comcast ISP Running firewall on a P400T YellowBox from Anthology (a Linux firewall) Modem-->P400T-->PAP2 I get a connection fine when i go Modem-->PAP2," TheDude explains. "I have port forwarding configured per the user manual - UDP is open to the PAP2's IP on ports 5060,5061,53,69, and 10000-20000 

"Still - I get no phone light on the PAP2."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member shaik takes the time to come up with some suggestions, but turns out that TheDude was able to figure out and resolve this issue.

"Found the problem - Yellow Box by Anthology reserves port 10,000 for admin console and so even if i forward it, the yellow box doesn't actually release data on 10,000," he writes.

"My solution - buy a wireless Voip router and combine all functions into 1 outside the firewall," TheDude adds. "Not the greatest for wireless security, but unless I can change the port config of a Vonage device, no choice."

Andy Abramson of VoIP Watch writes about what he thinks of Vonage's new "511" traffic alerts capability, which was announced earlier this week. He also describes and links to the New York Times article I just talked about in which Vonage-compatible equipment is  reviewed.

Russell Shaw of the ZDNet IP Telephony blog also comments on, and links to, that New York Times article. 

Ted Wallingford of Signal To Noise quotes one Vonage user about some difficulties he is having with Vonage's service.

Garrett Smith of the Smith On Voip would like to see less Vonage marketing inserts in monthly statements he has been receiving from Sears and from his gas company.

From time to time, we like to feature interesting and entertaining posts from Blogs that are not necessarily about VoIP, but mention Vonage. 

On this new blog I found earlier today which is named, Mike's Blog, blogger Michael Reyes writes, "when I first purchased Voip 2 years ago, I went with Vonage but before I actually ordered my subscription I searched the web for information. One of the sites I found was the Vonage Forums. While reading the post and posting my own questions on the Vonage Forums, I came to realize that Vonage was perfect for me and signed up. I never regretted signing up for Vonage and continue to be with them today. If it weren’t for the Vonage Forums I probably would be with some other service and not so happy."

Vonage Stock Report

On Thursday  on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $7.49 a share, which was up 17 cents (and also up +2.32%) from Wednesday's $7.32 a share and also 23 cents higher than the session low of $7.26 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Thursday were added up to be 241,700 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

The test is located in Washington DC.
