Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

In the news, we'll find out who is doing a parody of a Vonage commercial, and where. We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread about router problems, and another about call forwarding issues. We'll check in on Vonage's stock price.

Texas High-Schoolers To Parody Vonage Commercial

In Huntsville, Texas, the Huntsville High School SOAP (Speaking Out Against Problems) sometimes performs parodies to get their message across. 

Danielle Williams, SOAP Squad advisor, tells the Huntsville Item newspaper's Leslie Howland that this week as part of SOAP's Red Ribbon Week, the group will perform several parodies including- get this- a Vonage commercial.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member and year-long Vonage customer gutterrat has been having some problems with his RT31P2 of late. Gutterrat wants to know what's up, and because of that, he's decided to start a new Vonage Forum thread which he named, RT31P2 problems.

"I've been a Vonage customer for over a year now. I purchased the RT31P2 at Best Buy & have had issues from day one," gutterrat writes.

And next, gutterrat explains the problem.

"Basically the quality of the phone calls are terrible. it sounds as if I'm in a tunnel talking on my cell phone," gutterrat points out.  There are even periods when I will receive a call and am unable to hear the person on the other end. They can hear me just fine - but I can't hear them. 

"Or, while in the middle of a call, there is dead silence - again the person on the other end can hear me - but I can't hear them," gutterrat makes a point of adding.

Then gutterrat adds that he has talked to Vonage customer support and they gave him a few things to try - plug it into a different out let away form the computer - or update firmware etc., but.. nothing has worked. 

"Vonage finally has told me that it's my ISP, but I have a buddy w/ the exact same router (different ISP) & he has the same problems," gutterrat points out further. "I've even taken my router to my parents house (again, different ISP) - and I have the exact same problem."

"Should I just ditch the RT31P2 and get a new router?," gutterrat then asks. if so - what one? "My concern, I don't want to spend another $50 - $100 on a router to come away with the same terrible quality."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member echardcore follows up with some advice.

"The RT31P2 is a fine device. It's your Internet connection that is bad," he writes, suggesting that gutterrat try the test at http://myspeed.visualware.com/voip.

And then echardcore offers some suggestions as to how gutterrat should interpret these results, and what his course of action should be as a result of that.

"If your QoS is 80 and below contact your ISP about DIRECT CONNECTIONS," he suggests. "If your jitter is above 5 contact ISP. If UL/DL fluctuate (run test several times) contact IS."

New Vonage Forum Member HyDr0 joins this thread with some suggestions for gutterrat.

"I have not used the Linksys RT31P but I have used the MotoVT2442," HyDr0 tells us. "Right out of the box the VT2442 , was easy to use and the sound quality I had experienced was way better than I expected. 

"If you have a router already just pick up a phone adapter," HyDr0 adds. "They should be fairly cheaper."

And then as to that point, echardcore comes back on the thread with a follow-up post.

Because some seemingly unexplainable things happen when Vonage Forum Member ellen22 forwards her Vonage calls to her Sprint phone, she decided to seek some answers by starting a Vonage Forum thread on the subject. And then she named this thread, Strange event when forwarding to Sprint PCS.

"I dialed a (Sprint PCS) phone number, the person who answered, was not the person I was calling, had a totally different phone number. (confirmed). My phone co is not Sprint, so my company would not even take a repair report. I called Sprint/Nextel *three* times, each call taking several minutes for me to calmly and courteously explain the situation, get transferred to 'tech support' and get disconnected," ellen22 writes.

"It's not that I made a mistake in dialing. For example, the number I dial is 123-444-6666, and the number I reach is 123-777-2222," ellen22 explains further.
"I don't know the person I'm calling's name- she answered an ad, didn't leave her name, just the #. I hoping eventually she'll find out her phone is out of order, or it could be the wires are crossed. well, it's wireless so I guess it's not the wires that are crossed."

Vonage Forum Member Steve48 answers, asking ellen22 if this is a Vonage problem or perhaps, more of a technical issue for Sprint to figure out. Ellen22 writes that because this involves Vonage, she wanted to try this Forum out for possible answers just in case Vonage is somewhat at fault.

"People do often forward their Vonage numbers to all kinds of other phones," Steve48 posts back. "In this case you seem to know that the number you called is a PCS number, so it doesn't sound like a Vonage forwarding issue. However, it could easily be a PCS forwarding issue."

So I guess what the story is here is that sometimes, when there is more than one service provider involved in an issue involving Vonage, it is not necessarily Vonage's fault when something goes wrong.

Vonage Stock Report

On Monday  on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $7.55 a share, which was up seven cents (and also up +0.94%)  from Friday's $7.48 a share but it was nine cents higher than the session low of $7.46 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Monday winded up being 218,200 shares.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75
