Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 20, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll read about a Vonage promotion that I bet will warm your heart. We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread about Vonage features, and where most Vonage features are actually listed. We'll check in on Vonage's stock price. And this is Friday, where we will read about what the bloggers have said about Vonage this week.

In The News

Vonage Honors 300 Millionth American With Free Phone Service for Life

Estimates are that the United States passed 300 million people in population at 7:46 a.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday morning. And studies of birth records showed that the 300 millionth American is newborn Kiyah Lanae Boyd of Atlanta, Georgia.

On yesterday Vonage announced they would mark this momentous occasion by giving Kiyah and her family free Vonage phone service for life.

"Once we heard the Boyd's story, we immediately reached out and offered them free Vonage service for life," says Michael Tribolet, president of Vonage America. "Kiyah's father Kristopher is committed to the military and traveling all across the globe for the next 20 years, and we really felt for their family knowing they'd be separated for much of Kiyah’s early years. We wanted the family to be able to stay in touch, and when we called to tell them about the free service, they informed us they were already Vonage customers!"

Kristopher Boyd is a Navy Petty Officer 1st Class, and heads back to his station in Bahrain this Friday, where he has been using Vonage for the past few months. Vonage will be donating a free phone line for life for the Boyd’s to use at home, while Kristopher is away using Vonage when he’s deployed for missions.

In The Blogs

I've decided to condense this regular Friday feature to spotlight posts mostly or at least Vonage.

We read about 15 Voip and IP-telephony-related Weblogs. Some we read more than others, but we enjoy most of them. Face it, bloggers are opinion-shapers. So today, we are going to give you a round-up of what the blogs we read have said about Vonage over the last week or so.

Here's what the Voip bloggers have been writing about with regard to Vonage and affecting Vonage as well.

Garrett Smith of the Smith On Voip has a long post on what sounds like his irritation that he is getting so many promotional offers from Vonage. These offers are so many in frequency they seem to be reminding Garrett of what AOL used to do when they distributed free promotional disks everywhere and anywhere.

Rich Tehrani of VoIP Blog doesn't think all that many people care about Net Neutrality.

Russell Shaw of the ZDNet IP Telephony blog wrote an post in which he linked to a Vonage Forum post about using your TiVo to read your Vonage voice mail messages. The post he links to is entitled, Control Vonage With Your TiVo

Ted Wallingford of Signal To Noise writes about the state of Missouri wanting to regulate VoIP, and a key Vonage competitor (Comcast), that has sued Missouri to prevent them from doing so.

Vonage Stock Report

On Thursday  on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $7.69 a share, which was up four cents (and also up 0.52%)  from Wednesday's $7.65 a share and it was also 11 cents higher than the session low of $7.58 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Thursday winded up being 418,100 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

Check Out Our Revised Vonage V-Phone and Softphone Forum

Many of you are probably already familiar with our Vonage Softphone Forum. That's where we cover Vonage's very popular SoftPhone service which you can access directly from your PC's screen. This is section of the Vonage Forum with a linked list of threads with questions and solutions about Vonage SoftPhone.

But now I am pleased to announce that I've added discussions and threads about the Vonage V-Phone- which when you insert it into a USB, can turn any PC or laptop into a fully functional Vonage phone. Because I thought the Softphone Forum would be a natural place to include V-Phone threads,  I decided to rename this forum, the Vonage V-Phone and Softphone Forum. It's a very popular forum, closing in on 1,000 posts! Check it out. Here's the direct link.

Check Out Our New Vonage Forum Toolbar

After a ton of hard work and months of beta testing, I am happy to announce the release of the Vonage Forum Toolbar.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar can provide you with easy desktop access to your Vonage Voicemail as well as total minutes used during your billing period, It works for all Vonage.com, Vonage.ca and Vonage.uk users.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar works with Internet Explorer and Firefox.

If you have questions, or comments, I've made a NEW Vonage Forum Toolbar Thread. Here's the direct link.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Monday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular Vonage Forum Member of the Week feature!!
