Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 18, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, I want to tell you about a very special feature I will introduce today, and try to do once a month or so.

Ever wonder what the most popular threads are across all the Vonage Forums we have here? Well, I have just compiled a list of every Vonage Forums thread (except for stickys) that has more than 1,000 reads and which the last view was within the last 30 days. I've included a link to each of these threads. So I hope you will read and click!

In the news, we'll catch up on the progress of Vonage's efforts to deploy E911 to every Vonage customer in the United States.  We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread about a multiple-Vonage line router solution, and also a thread about call forwarding from a second Vonage line to a non-Vonage phone line. And we'll go over Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Offers E911 On More Than 91% Of Their Subscriber Lines

Yesterday Vonage announced that over 91% of their U.S. subscriber lines are now equipped with Enhanced 911 (E911) service -- a feature that automatically associates a physical address with the calling party's telephone number.

In less than 30 days, Vonage has equipped an additional 80 locally-run emergency call centers across the U.S. with E911. That brings the total number of calling centers with emergency 911 service to over 5900.

Vonage's nomadic E911 solution gives customers the ability to reach a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), or 911 center, through the dedicated 911 network infrastructure. With Vonage's nomadic E911 solution, a customer's call is automatically routed to the appropriate 911 center, with the caller's registered street address and telephone number appearing on the dispatcher screen -- regardless of where or what exchange they are calling from. Vonage will continue to turn up and test new PSAPs that are VoIP-ready every day.

"Today over 91 percent of our U.S. subscriber lines have full E911 capability, which is a tremendous step for Vonage. The company will continue to work diligently to deploy E911 to its subscribers across the United States," says Vonage CEO Michael Snyder. "Our goal is to get every Vonage customer help when they need it and we will not stop working with the FCC, regulators, Congress and PSAPs until there is equal access to E911 for Vonage's customers."

Here's A List of Our Most Popular Active Threads

This is a ranked list of all the threads across each one of our Active Vonage Forums (excluding threads in our archive forum) that have logged more than 1,000 page views, with the most current view within the last 30 days. Now, let us catch up with what's new...

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member mur has been wondering about something that he's started a new Vonage Forum thread about. He has called this thread, How can we put multiple lines (5+) on one router/device?

"We have 4 Vonage voice lines and 1 fax," he fills us in about. "We recently added the 4th voice line and we now have 1 modem (for ISP) and 3 routers and/or Vonage devices (one Motorola, one Linksys, one Vonage device -- all provided by Vonage at different times during the past couple of years) for the 4 phone lines."

Next, mur asks his question.

"How can we get rid of the 3 routers/devices and the rat's nest of cables, and have everything run through a single router/device," asks mur. Does Vonage offer a device that can do that? If not, what third-party router/device would you recommend, and how would you hook it up?"

To close his thread-opening post, mur then adds the reason he'd like to be able to do this is to be able to have enough ports in one router/device for the 4 PCs, 4 phone lines and 1 fax line, plus room for possible future expansion of both PCs and phone lines.

Fellow Vonage Forum Member GraysonPeddie read mur's question with enough interest to offer a response with his advice. And his response has a link to an article linked from the Vonage Forum.

Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router With 8 10/100 Switched Ports, NETGEAR ProSafe Wireless VPN Firewall 8 with 8 Port 10/100 Mbps Switch, or Netgear Fast Ethernet Switch (FS116NA) would be the one to minimize the number of routers, but as far as I know, there aren't any adapters with 2+ number of lines, so you will have to buy D-Link VTA for each of two lines.

Forwarding to Bellsouth Fax Line is a new thread just started by new Vonage Forum Member Julian813.

"I want to get an additional number from Vonage and then forward it my dedicated fax line (with BellSouth)," julian813 writes. "Will it work?"

Once again, GraysonPeddie steps up.

"It will work. Do note that forwarding charges from BellSouth may apply," he writes.

Steve48 follows up with an important point for mur to remember.

"Also, if you're not on the unlimited plan," writes Steve48, "then you'll be charged minutes for incoming calls to the Vonage line.:

Mundy5 Hits 500 Posts

As a gesture of thanks for their expertise, I think I will start noting when Vonage Forum Members reach a round number of posts since they joined. By round number, I mean 500, 1,000, 2,000 and higher. Maybe I will even start doing 100 and 200.

But anyways I just noticed that Vonage Forum Member mundy5 reached the 500 post level on Monday- which given his name, is fitting I guess. Thanks to mundy5 for all his expertise, advice and hints. To browse through a list of some of mundy5's recent posts, click here.

Vonage Stock Report

On Tuesday  on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $7.69 a share, which was up six cents (and also up 0.79%)  from Monday's $7.63 a share and also a full 26 cents higher than the session low of $7.43 a share early in the trading day. Total Vonage shares traded on Tuesday were calculated to be 809,800 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

Check Out Our Revised Vonage V-Phone and Softphone Forum

Many of you are probably already familiar with our Vonage Softphone Forum. That's where we cover Vonage's very popular SoftPhone service which you can access directly from your PC's screen. This is section of the Vonage Forum with a linked list of threads with questions and solutions about Vonage SoftPhone.

But now I am pleased to announce that I've added discussions and threads about the Vonage V-Phone- which when you insert it into a USB, can turn any PC or laptop into a fully functional Vonage phone. Because I thought the Softphone Forum would be a natural place to include V-Phone threads,  I decided to rename this forum, the Vonage V-Phone and Softphone Forum. It's a very popular forum, closing in on 1,000 posts! Check it out. Here's the direct link.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Thursday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
