Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 17, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

I want to review some great news I wrote about in yesterday's Digest.

Early Monday morning, we picked up our 30 millionth page view here on the Vonage Forum. Considering that we reached 29 million page views back on Thursday, September 28, it took us only 18 days to go from 29 to 30 million page views. That's more than 50,000 page views a day! Every time any one of you clicks on a page here, that's an other page view. Great going!

That's not all. On Saturday morning, we passed the 90,000 mark for articles on the Vonage Forum posted by Vonage Forum Members since we started up the Vonage Forum all the way back in March, 2003. Hey, post away!

In the news, we'll spotlight a very significant jump in Vonage's stock price. We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread about managing your Vonage voice mail over your TiVo, and then a compatibility problem between a WiFi router and a Vonage router.

In The News

Vonage Stock Report

On the basis that a significant shift in Vonage's stock price of at least five percent is news, I will start putting Vonage's stock price news in the news section of the Digest when prices fluctuate that much. Or, at least, very close to it.

Monday was one of those days.

On Monday  on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $7.63 a share, which was up 36 cents (and also up 4.95%)  from Friday's $7.27 a share and also 38 cents higher than the session low of $7.25 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Monday winded up to be594,300 shares.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

One of the most interesting Vonage Forum threads I've read recently is entitled, Control Vonage with your TiVo. It has been started by one of our most knowledgeable Members, and that is VonageTPA.

"I don't have a TiVo, nor do I have any connection to the author/program, just happened to stumble across this whilst browsing

TiVonage allows Vonage customers to manage their voice mail, including:

* Check for new messages
* Listen to messages
* View caller ID and address info
* Return calls via Click2Call

...all from the comfort of their TiVo remotes.

"Not having a TiVo, I'm not sure what's involved with installing this to your TiVo," VonageTPA writes, "but I'm sure there's documentation in the .ZIP file that'll make sense to someone with a TiVo.

Next we have scerruti one of our other veteran Members, who makes these three posts in a row about this issue.

A great find, although I would like to see your topic title changed to something like "Access Vonage Voicemail through TiVo". What may be more interesting is a dead link in the info page. Quote: This project relies heavily on John Mutchek's  Vonaje** Java API for Vonage. *Link not available when I tested it. I have a TiVo and I will be checking this out tonight. Just for those who wonder how this works: Home media applications like these actually run on a server and the user interface is displayed on your TiVo. Since TiVo home media programs are typically written in Java they generally (as this one does) work under Linux and Windows (and presumably Mac OS). This application is converting Vonage voicemails into MP3 format for playback on TiVo."

Then scerruti follows up that post by adding:

There is a fairly extensive thread on the software at:

And the sourceforge page is:

The Vonaje software is available:

Then, the third of scerruti's successive posts finds him writing, "it appears that the Vonaje API retrieves voice mail messages, billing information and does third party call control.

Because new Vonage Forum Member chance had been experiencing compatibility issues between his WiFi and Vonage routers, he decided not to leave anything to "chance." (Sorry, I couldn't resist). Instead he's opened a Vonage Forum thread that he's named, compatibility problem: WRT54G wifi router/RTP300 Voip router.

"I was using a Linksys RTP300 Voip router for my Vonage service with no problems," chance writes. "I added a Linksys WRT54G wireless router so I could have two computers using the same broadband connection and now occasionally when someone calls me, the connection is lost when I try to answer."

And then chance writes that for the next one to five minutes he has  no dial tone as the light for "phone 1" on the RTP300 goes out.

"It eventually comes back and works. I think it's a compatibility problem," chance adds. "Any ideas how to fix? Thanks"

Vonage Forum Member barnbarn offers some advice.

"Since you're using 2 Voip devices, try to change one of the router's IP address because they have the same IP which is," barnbarn suggests to chance. "You can set one of the router to by going to the router's page."

Check Out Our Revised Vonage V-Phone and Softphone Forum

Many of you are probably already familiar with our Vonage Softphone Forum. That's where we cover Vonage's very popular SoftPhone service which you can access directly from your PC's screen. This is section of the Vonage Forum with a linked list of threads with questions and solutions about Vonage SoftPhone.

But now I am pleased to announce that I've added discussions and threads about the Vonage V-Phone- which when you insert it into a USB, can turn any PC or laptop into a fully functional Vonage phone. Because I thought the Softphone Forum would be a natural place to include V-Phone threads,  I decided to rename this forum, the Vonage V-Phone and Softphone Forum. It's a very popular forum, closing in on 1,000 posts! Check it out. Here's the direct link.

Check Out Our New Vonage Forum Toolbar

After a ton of hard work and months of beta testing, I am happy to announce the release of the Vonage Forum Toolbar.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar can provide you with easy desktop access to your Vonage Voicemail as well as total minutes used during your billing period, It works for all, and users.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar works with Internet Explorer and Firefox.

If you have questions, or comments, I've made a NEW Vonage Forum Toolbar Thread. Here's the direct link.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Wednesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
