Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 16, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

First, I have some really good news. Early this morning, we picked up our 30 millionth page view here on the Vonage Forum. Considering that we reached 29 million page views back on Thursday, September 28, it took us only 18 days to go from 29 to 30 million page views. That's more than 50,000 page views a day! Every time any one of you clicks on a page here, that's an other page view. Great going!

That's not all. On Saturday morning, we passed the 90,000 mark for articles on the Vonage Forum posted by Vonage Forum Members since we started up the Vonage Forum all the way back in March, 2003. Hey, post away!

Now I guess it would be best to start writing about why you're reading the Vonage Forum Digest this morning.

In the news, we'll read about a new weather service available to Vonage users, as well as highlights of an interview Vonage's Jeffrey Citron and Michael Snyder did with a leading New Jersey newspaper yesterday. We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread about wireless phone jacks used with the Vonage service, and another thread about the timing of Vonage's rings. We'll check in on Vonage's stock price. And this is Monday, which is the day when we meet our newly named Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

In The News

Vonage To Provide Free Weather Forecasts For All U.S. Customers

This morning Vonage has announced that it is partnering with  to offer free U.S. weather forecasts for Vonage customers in the United States.

Vonage subscribers can call 700-WEATHER from any Vonage enabled device and get current weather conditions, 5-day forecasts and severe-weather warnings provided by

Customers can now access weather forecasts for business or vacation travel simply by entering any U.S. 5-digit zip code.

Here's how it will work. is providing weather data to Vonage via synthetic speech markup language (SSML) AccuWeather's forecasts, which cover every location in the U.S., are translated by Vonage into a realistic-sounding synthetic voice that subscribers hear when they call 700-WEATHER for a forecast.

Vonage Execs Citron, Snyder Interviewed By Major Newspaper

On Sunday, the Asbury Park (N.J. Press), one of the larger newspapers in Vonage's home state of New Jersey, ran an interview with Vonage CEO Mike Snyder and Vonage Chairman and Chief Strategist Jeffrey Citron.

Here are portions of the interview:

QUESTION: Vonage doesn't have a triple-play kind of offering (cable TV, phone service and high-speed Internet service) that can compete with cable and telephone companies. Do you think that is holding you back?

CITRON: At least one thing's for sure: the market is starting to segment itself. . . . On one side, you have national operators like Vonage . . . and you've got regional players, typically cable operators.

In our case, we have mobility, convenience of having your phone number for life, the ability to bring advanced capabilities to market.

They are servicing a different set of customers. They're selling you plain old telephone service only, delivered over their physical facilities, and they're selling convenience.

Both of us can, and will, co-exist inside the marketplace for a long time. The real question is how will the market evolve over time. Surely, we believe very strongly that the market will evolve around the personalization and customization of your services and around mobility, and I think Vonage has a great platform to take advantage of that trend.

QUESTION: Where is Vonage's technology going?

SNYDER: We've spent, (and) invest on a daily basis, a huge amount of money in solid engineering and solid marketing to figure out, OK, what does customization and personalization mean. And then (we) have the ability, inside this same facility, to marshal the resources and bring that to market.

We think that's going to be . . . our differentiator, moving forward between us and whoever else comes in this market to compete.

It's the only thing we do. We don't have to worry about network television or . . . building out cable networks. We only do telephony and that gives us the ability to concentrate all our resources to provide the right product at the right time for everybody that wants to use it.

QUESTION: What's your impression of your latest television commercial where the guy is hit in the head by a Vonage box?

SNYDER: I had people call me from all over the United States and say, "I just saw this thing. It's as funny as anything." The purpose of those ads is, through humor, to get people to pay attention to . . . Vonage and . . . what we do: low-cost phone system, unlimited local (and) long distance, a variety of calling features, $24.99 (a month). And it's that humor that initially attracts you, causes you to look up and start to listen.

I wasn't going to remind you again so soon, but since the newspaper brought it up and Mike Snyder talked about these new Vonage tv commercials, we've added two new, very funny Vonage Commercials to our Vonage TV Commercials Forum section of the Vonage Forum.

We've added Vonage TV Commercial - Beauty and the Geek and Vonage TV Commercial - Dolphins. I've just linked to each of them, so check them out!

Those two commercials join the many others we list, and are available for viewing in the Forum. Each ad is just a click away!

On The Vonage Voip Forum

I see that pigtailpat, who has to have one of the coolest names of any Vonage Forum Member, has just started a new thread that she (I assume pigtailpat is a she) called, Wireless Phone Jacks???

"Has anyone tried using a wireless phone jack system with the regular ATA adapter?," writes pigtailpat.  "Like the RCA wireless system? In other words, instead of putting the main base of your cordless system in line 1 of the phone, you put the main part of the RCA wireless system in their and connect another wireless extension jack to whether your phone is in the house (and not put in the cord in the regular phone jack) so that you have a connection to the ATA adapter via the electrical line in your house?

"I wonder if this is possible," pigtailpat writes.

Vonage Forum Member mundy5 has an answer.

"Yes it is possible though there have been complaints of line noise in the past and if possible, it'll be better to use the telephone wiring in your home since you can isolate it from the telephone company's incoming line," writes mundy5, who lives in the St. Louis area. "This might be more difficult though not impossible with a rental apt."

Vonage Forum Member GraysonPeddie, who writes that he is hearing and visually impaired, wants help with knowing more about Vonage's ring tones. To get this info, GraysonPeddie started a Vonage Forum thread that he has given the title to of, Number of rings for 50 seconds before Voicemail kicks in.

Actually, this is a question that should be of interest to a wide group of Vonage users.

"How many rings are in 50 seconds?," he writes. "I have a TTY machine that allows me to set the number of rings up to 9 and I'm not sure how many seconds is per ring."

Then GraysonPeddie asks, "isn't it about 9 rings for up to 54 seconds?

"The reason I think about this," GraysonPeddie explains, "is since you can set up to 50 seconds in Voicemail, I'm thinking that 9 rings equal up to 54 seconds because if I'm right, there are 4 seconds of audible ring and 2 seconds of silence and it will repeat until up to 54 seconds but 50 seconds max because the voicemail answers the phone for telling the caller to leave me the message."

Vonage Forum Member vonalink is first up.

"I counted 9 rings in 50 secs," he writes. "My voicemail is off."

Next to post in this thread is Vonage Forum Member Cajunnanci.

"I have my (Vonage voice mail) set to 20 seconds, which is 4 rings," Cajunnanci writes. "Hope this helps!"

Apparently it has helped, because GraysonPeddie follows up with a post in which he writes a note of thanks.

Vonalink Is Our Vonage Forum Member of the Week

Over the last few weeks, I have been noticing that Vonage Forum Member vonalink has been extremely helpful and active. As in the last thread I just wrote about, vonalink has over 100 posts with great advice, but get this- he hasn't even been a Vonage Forum Member for even a month! But even though vonalink hasn't been a Vonage Forum Member for all that long (one month as of tomorrow), he's certainly been a valuable asset. So let us meet vonalink, our new Vonage Forum Member of the Week! To browse through a list of vonalink's recent posts, just click here.

Check Out Our Revised Vonage V-Phone and Softphone Forum

Many of you are probably already familiar with our Vonage Softphone Forum. That's where we cover Vonage's very popular SoftPhone service which you can access directly from your PC's screen. This is section of the Vonage Forum with a linked list of threads with questions and solutions about Vonage SoftPhone.

But now I am pleased to announce that I've added discussions and threads about the Vonage V-Phone- which when you insert it into a USB, can turn any PC or laptop into a fully functional Vonage phone. Because I thought the Softphone Forum would be a natural place to include V-Phone threads,  I decided to rename this forum, the Vonage V-Phone and Softphone Forum. It's a very popular forum, closing in on 1,000 posts! Check it out. Here's the direct link.

Check Out Our New Vonage Forum Toolbar

After a ton of hard work and months of beta testing, I am happy to announce the release of the Vonage Forum Toolbar.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar can provide you with easy desktop access to your Vonage Voicemail as well as total minutes used during your billing period, It works for all, and users.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar works with Internet Explorer and Firefox.

If you have questions, or comments, I've made a NEW Vonage Forum Toolbar Thread. Here's the direct link.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Tuesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
