Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 13, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll learn about in what U.S. state Vonage has just added many new areas with local number availability.  We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread about a router issue. We'll check in on Vonage's stock price. And this is Friday, which is our In The Blogs day.

In The News

Vonage Adds Local Numbers In Two North Carolina Counties

Vonage announced that it now offers local area code selection in Henderson and Wilson, North Carolina. Vonage customers working and residing in those regions, which include Vance and Wilson Counties, can now either keep their current numbers or choose telephone numbers within the popular (252) area code.

Vonage continues to offer local area code selection in dozens of locations throughout Burlington, Greensboro, Pembroke, Raleigh-Durham and Winston-Salem, N.C.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

A new Vonage Forum thread has been opened and it is entitled, Setup RTP300 and Netgear WGT624. The thread has been started by new Vonage Forum Member nextelito.

"I need to hook my Vonage router and my wireless router together. I just don't know how to setup the wireless router as a hub or switch," nextelito writes. "Is it possible?"

Then nextelito explains the reason why he wants to do this.

"I want to set up a home network with laptops and desktops, I need to share a printer and files wireless and wired computers," he writes." Has anybody done anything similar?"

It seems that nextelito gets lots of advice from fellow Vonage Forum Members.

Fellow Vonage Forum Member vonalink suggests that nextelito should check out: (Connecting multiple routers but keeping same subnet) and, a thread that is named, Configuring 2 routers with Vonage.

And current Vonage Forum Member of the Week Steve48 writes that nextelito should click on, which is to a thread that is called, bridge mode..

But then Vonage Forum Member russa has another idea for nextelito.

"The RTP300 is an old router/phone adapter," he writes.." I replaced it with the Linksys PAP2 phone adapter."

"I have a Linksys WRT54g hooked-up directly to my cable modem," russa adds. "Then I have a Linksys switch hooked-up to the WRT54g. I then hooked-up my computer and the Linksys PAP2 to the switch. This should work.

But then, russa offers some additional advice.

"However, if you need any dedicated ports assigned to your computer you may want to shut-off DHCP on your RTP300 by accessing the web page for the RTP300," he points out to nextelito.

In The Blogs

We read about 15 Voip and IP-telephony-related Weblogs. Some we read more than others, but we enjoy most of them. Face it, bloggers are opinion-shapers. So today, we are going to give you a round-up of what the blogs we read have said about Vonage recently.

Here's what the Voip bloggers have been writing about:

Rich Tehrani of VoIP Blog writes lots of posts and has lots of photos from the Internet Telephony show in San Diego, which is going on right now. I know lots of people who have been attending.

Alec Saunders of Alec Saunders .LOG doesn't write about Vonage this week, but he does write about some of the other calling services he has tried lately.

Andy Abramson of VoIP Watch writes about his frustration with a leading cellular services provider and BlackBerry.

Jeff Pulver of writes about Internet TV, as well as his thoughts of YouTube's VoIP application for the Second Life virtual world website.

Om Malik of Om Malik's Broadband Blog recently commented about what Vonage Chairman and Chief Strategist Jeffrey Citron said in USAToday this week about competition from cable broadband service providers.

Tom Keating of VoIP Blog recently wrote about his experiences canceling Vonage's service. By the way, several Vonage Forum Members took Tom to task for this. There's a Vonage Forum thread about this issue, which has been named, Tom Keating Cancels Vonage Service.

Mark Evans of the Telecom .. and Tech blog (he's from Canada, which is a northern country, and writes more posts about telecom and tech) compares YouTube and Skype, listing Vonage as a key competitor to Skype.

Russell Shaw of the ZDNet IP Telephony blog wrote an article in which he linked to a post written by a well-known developer in which the developer said Comcast lied to his wife about Vonage.

Paul Kapustka of the Paul Kapustka blog is very skeptical about some of these polls going around that seems to indicate the American public doesn't want net neutrality. Recently, he wrote about Vonage Chairman and Chief Strategist Jeff Citron's Fall VON 2006 keynote speech.

PhoneBoy of the PhoneBoy blog has been doing a lot of video blogging.

Ted Wallingford of Signal To Noise writes lots of posts about some flashy new wireless and Voip services.

Garrett Smith of the Smith On Voip blog writes about some new Skype devices, as well as a major development in the Asterisk, open source-VoIP world.

Ken Camp of the Realtime-VoIP offers his view on an article on mobile Voip that appeared recently on the Wired Magazine website.

From time to time, we like to feature interesting and entertaining posts from Blogs that are not necessarily about VoIP, but mention Vonage. In this new My blog I had found earlier this morning and it is called, Sankey Blog, blogger Jake Sankey writes: "Vonage is a terrific way for you to save money on your phone bill! If you want to save money on your bill, you need to check out the latest information on Voip technology. You can get all the information you need on Voip at!"

Thank you, Jake Sankey! I'll return the favor. Here's a link to the post I just quoted from

Check Out Our Revised Vonage V-Phone and Softphone Forum

Many of you are probably already familiar with our Vonage Softphone Forum. That's where we cover Vonage's very popular SoftPhone service which you can access directly from your PC's screen. This is section of the Vonage Forum with a linked list of threads with questions and solutions about Vonage SoftPhone.

But now I am pleased to announce that I've added discussions and threads about the Vonage V-Phone- which when you insert it into a USB, can turn any PC or laptop into a fully functional Vonage phone. Because I thought the Softphone Forum would be a natural place to include V-Phone threads,  I decided to rename this forum, the Vonage V-Phone and Softphone Forum. It's a very popular forum, closing in on 1,000 posts! Check it out. Here's the direct link.

Check Out Our New Vonage Forum Toolbar

After a ton of hard work and months of beta testing, I am happy to announce the release of the Vonage Forum Toolbar.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar can provide you with easy desktop access to your Vonage Voicemail as well as total minutes used during your billing period, It works for all, and users.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar works with Internet Explorer and Firefox.

If you have questions, or comments, I've made a NEW Vonage Forum Toolbar Thread. Here's the direct link.

We've Updated Our VoIP Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
Voip bytes per packet =8
Voip simulation seconds =10
Voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Monday morning with our next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest, including our popular Vonage Forum Member of the Week feature!!
