Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest. 

In the news, we'll find out in which U.S. state local Vonage numbers have just become available. We will also find out where Vonage now ranks among the largest Internet advertisers. Then we will go over two Vonage Forum threads, one about "dynamic fragmentation," and another thread about an adapter set-up issue. And we'll also go over Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Adds Local Phone Numbers In Idaho

Vonage has announced that it now offers Idaho's local area code.

This means that Idahoans  who are Vonage customers can now keep their current numbers or choose telephone numbers within Idaho's state-wide (208) area code.

Vonage Is Fifth Largest Internet Advertiser

In the newest Nielsen/Net Ratings calculations for September, Vonage was the fifth largest Internet advertiser with an estimated $15,638,500 spent on Internet advertising. Nielsen Net Ratings comes up with that number by matching the number of times Vonage ads appear on websites with the rates those web sites charge for ads to appear on their site. Verizon was the only other predominantly phone company in the top ten. They finished fourth, just ahead of Vonage but behind leader GUS plc, an online retailer based in the U.K. but one which is international in scope.

On The Vonage VoIP Forum

Vonage Forum Member  tWiZzLeR saw the phrase "dynamic fragmentation" in the QoS (Quality of Service) options for his Vonage-compatible router. But because tWiZzLeR didn't know what that phrase exactly means, he decided to start a Vonage Forum thread and quite naturally then name it, Dynamic Fragmentation.

"I have a Linksys DI-724U which has the StreamEngine QoS technology. One of the QoS options is to use "Dynamic Fragmentation" and when I check the help file here is the info," he writes:

Dynamic Fragmentation
This option should be enabled when you have a slow Internet uplink. It helps to reduce the impact that large low priority network packets can have on more urgent ones by breaking the large packets into several smaller packets.

"My question is: can anyone define for me 'a slow Internet uplink'? What speed is considered to be slow/fast?," he closed the post by asking.

The first Vonage Forum Member to take a shot at that question is Steve48. Given that he is Vonage Forum Member of the Week, Steve48 jumping in should not be a surprise.

"That's a question with no clear-cut answer, but I'd call any cable service slower than 1 Mbps down and 200 kbps up slow. Halve those for DSL," Steve48 writes.

"As far as the fragmentation thing is concerned, if you think your service may qualify as slow, then give it a try," Steve48 adds. "If it helps, it helps."

 Next, tWiZzLeR comes back and then he writes, "right now I have 10 MB down and 1.5 MB up, but with that definition by Linksys I have no idea what they mean by slow. Slow compared to what? Dialup?"

"They probably mean slow compared to whatever you need for what you're doing. In the world of VoIP, 90 kbps would be about as slow as you can stand' explains Steve48. By that standard, your service is very fast. .

Vonage Forum Member SteveBoog begins a new Vonage Forum thread that he's entitled, VT2142: Phone 1 Blinks yet all phones on hook/not-in-use?

"Just set up my connection yesterday, was working quite well until this morning," he writes. "Line is dead, tried all the unplugging-in-order, etc. gags one does when the cable's out for example."

"All the phones are on hook/hung up, and the internet works - phone service does not," SteveBoog points out. "Phone 1 is a steady blink."

SteveBoog then adds that initially he tried to route the setup: Modem, Router, Vonage, but then the phone worked and the Internet didn't. "Setting it up the way I did proved to be best, at the time at least."

After writing that, SteveBoog ended his thread-opening post by including the results of his Vonage speed test.

Fellow Vonage Forum Member GraysonPeddie looks at the results SteveBoog cited and then follows up with some of his initial ideas.

"Hmm...looking at your speed test statistics, are you plugging your computer directly to your cable modem for speed test?," GraysonPeddie writes.

"Have you tried to wait 30 seconds for your cable modem to setup before you plug in your Vonage adapter?," GraysonPeddie then asks SteveBoog. "Have you tried to configure the phone adapter (assuming your phone adapter's IP address is to get it to work?"

SteveBoog follows up by writing this:

"After wasting a half-hour on a prepaid cell with a gal I couldn't understand I took it upon myself to follow those plug-back-in-in-this-order-with-enough-time-between-each instructions and it finally fixed it....gotta do some reading and see if I can't rid myself of the ensuing line static but the hard part's over," writes SteveBoog.

"Yeah. You just can't rush setting up a phone adapter with your cable modem and your router," GraysonPeddie writes.

"Motorola VT2142 Quick Start Guide will help you out with setting up your phone adapter. To ensure the data traffic won't interfere with voicestream, just connect from modem to vonage to router."

Vonage Stock Report

On Wednesday  on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $7.34 a share, which was a decline of 26 cents from Tuesday's $7.08 a share. Monday's $7.08 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Wednesday added up to be 427,300 shares.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75
