In the news, we'll find out about more than two dozen Canadian cities and towns where local Vonage numbers have just become available. Then we will go over two Vonage Forum threads, one about equipment recommendations to use with Vonage's service, and another thread about what sounds like dropped packets on Vonage calls. And we'll also go over Vonage's stock price.

Vonage Canada Adds Local Number Availability in 25 Cities

Vonage Canada has announced that is has expanded the number of Canadian cities where it offers local numbers. Effective immediately, the company has added 25 new communities in Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and PEI. With the new additions, Vonage now offers local numbers in 70 Canadian communities with service starting from $19.99 per month. The following is a list of the new Canadian cities where Vonage now offers local numbers:

Alberta- Airdrie, Cochrane, High River, Okotoks, Strathmore, Canmore, Sherwood Park, St. Albert;

British Columbia- North Vancouver, West Vancouver, White Rock, Saanich, Chilliwack, Port Moody;

Ontario- Fort Erie, Welland, Niagara Falls, Port Colborne, Galt (Cambridge);

New Brunswick-Saint John, Moncton, Fredericton;

Nova Scotia-Sydney.

Prince Edward Island- Charlottetown.

On The Vonage VoIP Forum

We often see Vonage Forum threads looking for equipment recommendations. A good example of this is a new Vonage Forum thread by Vonage Forum Member eaken. And he has entitled this thread, Can somebody tell me what equipment I need??

"Here's what I'm trying to do," eaken writes. "Setup 3 Phones at 3 different people's houses. I want to be able to transfer calls between these 3 people. I would ideally like PBX-like functionality. I've looked into the Linksys SPA9000."

"Can anybody tell me what hardware I need, and what Vonage services I need to subscribe to in order to accomplish this," eaken adds.

Then fellow Vonage Forum Member vonalink sees this thread, but he asks eaken for more information.

"By transferring, do you mean one main number and the caller selects a destination? Or do you mean call transfer where you answer the call and then manually transfer the call ? This is done with #90," vonalink mentions.

Then vonalink suggests that eaken check out this link:

Eaken then makes another post with the information vonalink had requested.

"I'm trying to achieve full PBX functionality - music on hold, etc. while making it seem like everybody is located in the same place," he writes. "I'm trying to get 1 "main line" and everybody having extensions as well as DID (Direct Dialing) as well."

"I was thinking I could maybe achieve this by getting a main line and using a SPA9000," eaken explains, "but if everybody is in a different location, I'm not sure how to accomplish the foregoing."

Next, vonalink comes back on the thread and offers some very useful information.

"If the SPA9000 can work with Vonage, then the phones at the other locations can be standard SIP hard phones," he writes. "Maybe you can contact They integrate Asterisk PBX and resell Vonage business plans."

New Vonage Forum Member jenri's Vonage connection over his Comcast broadband Internet service has been losing packets. Because he was looking for a resolution, jenri decided to open a Vonage Forum thread which he named, Choppy audio due to Comcast losing packets. Using WRTP54G.

First, jenri gave us some details:

Choppy calls that results in Internet connection being restarted. I'm saying choppy because that's how Vonage tech support characterized it. 9 out of 10 calls go mute both ways within the first 90 seconds of the call. If both parties remain on the line, the call is re-established anywhere within 30 sec and 2 minutes without intervention. This happens as long as you stay on the call, and some times frequency of occurrence increases. Browsing alone does not seem to be a problem, but I must admit I only use my connection to read news, fantasy football, check my gmail account, buy stuff, etc.

Steps taken by Vonage tech support so far:

Had me enable cloning on the Vonage device.
Switched the vonage device to line 2

Verified that I have latest firmware. (I checked with the Super Senior Technician, the one you talk to after spending 60+ minutes over the phone and confirmed I did, I am currently on 1.00.62

They had me C:>/tracert
"Since this showed that I lost some packets and some >130ms delays, Super Duper Senior Vonage technician concluded that the problem is my ISP," jenri wrote. "Somehow I just did not buy it but had no proof to the contrary.

"Have not tried contacting Comcast yet, but I figured I'd post my experience here anyway.," continues jenri. "Anybody has any ideas to fix this problem?"

Well jenri, from looking at the next post you made in the thread you started, it looks like you are well on your way to doing just that.

"Just to keep everyone updated, I just got off the phone with Comcast, it turns out that they are effectively now Time Warner," writes jenri. "Anyways, after initially claiming that ping-wise everything looked A-OK, they will dispatch an engineer because they realized there was "some packet loss going on". Next Tuesday 10/17 I will hopefully have some more news."

But up until then..

" In the meantime, my phone is no bueno," jenri writes. My wife is getting ready to kill me."


Vonage Stock Report

On Tuesday  on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $7.34 a share, which was a rise of 26 cents, and 3.67 percent, Monday's $7.08 a share as well as 33 cents higher than the session low of $7.01 a share. Total Vonage shares traded on Tuesday were counted as 1,603,700 shares.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75
