Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 10, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

First we'll find out some news about Vonage Chairman Jeff Citron. Then we will go over two Vonage Forum threads, one about running a Vonage line alongside a traditional phone line, and about lost connections. We'll check in on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage Chairman and Chief Strategist Jeffrey Citron has been named as one of the Top 100 Voices in IP Communications.

The selection was unveiled today by TMC, publishers of Internet Telephony magazine.  The announcement was made as TMC prepares to open INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference & EXPO West 2006 at the San Diego Convention Center.

On The Vonage VoIP Forum

Vonage Forum Member sharkyfour has some questions that led him to open a new Vonage Forum thread that he called, Mixed Vonage & PSTN Service. Incidentally, PSTN stands for Public Switched Telephone Network. That's the traditional land-line phone system.

"I currently have both a Vonage line that I've had for 3 years now and I recently had to sign up for a basic AT&T PSTN line to appease the state daycare licensing people and their fear of Vonage's 911 and power-failure susceptibility," sharkyfour writes to open his post.

"I was wondering of there was a device or something similar that would allow my existing phones to intelligently use the two lines together. The biggest thing I'm looking for is if someone picks up a phone and dials 911, I want it to go through the PSTN line and not Vonage," he tells us. "It would be nice if it routed local calls through the PSTN instead of Vonage, also, since the PSTN number is the one we will be using for our daycare, and don't really want to confuse parents with the "Vonage Holdings" caller ID name if we can easily avoid it."

Then sharkyfour writes that he noticed some ATA devices made by Zoom have this feature, but he doesn't believe Vonage supports their ATAs. "Anyone know of anything that will work, other than spending $500+ to set up an Asterisk box?"

The answer to this question has been supplied by one of our most knowledgeable and helpful Vonage Forum Members, scerruti.

"The daycare licensing agency's justifications are lame, but I understand the need to work with them," scerruti writes.

"There are inexpensive devices that would do something similar to what you want, but many of them aren't designed for one important function, that is, to operate when power is lost," scerruti points out. "The same could be said for an Asterisk server, especially since it would take a much larger UPS to run it for an extended time."

Then scerruti says his suggestion would be to use two line phones.

"It would take the self discipline to select line 2 for non-local calls," he writes. "It should also be possible to have the phone company restrict your POTS line to local calls so as to prevent inadvertent long distance dialing on your POTS line."

Scerruti also suggests to sharkyfour that he could also mount a "red" wall phone specifically for use in emergency situations that was a single line phone connected to his POTS line.

And then scerruti offers one general, but very important suggestion to sharkyfour.

"You should have your networking equipment and adapter on a UPS," scerruti adds. "You should have phones available that work in the event of a power outage. It makes me wonder if the licensing agency checks to see if such phones are available."

This new Vonage Forum thread named Keep Losing my connection brings up a topic that I notice from time to time on the Vonage Forum.

"My connection keeps dropping, and when I pick up my phone, I get a fragmented recording, I can't quite make out., and as well as losing my Phone connection, my Road Runner connection goes out as well," writes Heather Sue.

"Shouldn't I still be able to connect to the Internet, considering it is a different service? "It may be off for minutes, maybe hours, happening more and more as the days go on."

The answer is probably an easy one, and doesn't directly involve Vonage.

"It sounds like a problem with your broadband provider, not your Vonage," writes Vonage Forum Member Vonalink. He then suggests to Heather Sue that she contact her broadband Internet service provider, which is Road Runner.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Wednesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.
