Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 9, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

Because today is the Columbus Day holiday in the U.S., there's not too much news today. So let us go over two Vonage Forum threads about router issues. We'll check in on Vonage's stock price. And this is Monday, where we'll meet our Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

On The Vonage VoIP Forum

Vonage Forum Member jmelcher has started a new Vonage Forum thread with a title that summarizes his question. The title of his new thread is, Disabling Firewall in WRT54G drops PAP2.

"I have noticed that when I disable certain features of the firewall in my WRT54G router it then prevents my PAP2 from working and thus - no phone calls," jmelcher writes.

"I wouldn't normally have disabled this, but I was helping my brother troubleshoot a problem he was having with his router (same model) and while on the phone with him, the call dropped within seconds of disabling the firewall settings," he adds. "I was able to repeat this again and again.

Then, jmelcher admits that although he doesn't know all that much about  firewall or ports, he is a little concerned that the router blocks his calls in the first place when this is disabled.

"I would have thought it would be the other way around," he points out, attaching a screenshot of his current settings. "As I mentioned, when all these are disabled, it prevents any data from my PAP2."

A very thorough answer is provided by Vonage Forum Member holler, who quotes from the Linksys WRT54G router's user guide:

Firewall Protection. This feature employs Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) for a more detailed review of data packets entering your network environment.

Block WAN Requests. Enable the Block WAN Request feature by checking the box beside Block Anonymous Internet Requests and you can prevent your network from being “pinged,” or detected, by other Internet users. The Block WAN Request feature also reinforces your network security by hiding your network ports. Both functions of the Block WAN Request feature make it more difficult for outside users to work their way into your network. This feature is enabled by default. Select Disabled to allow anonymous Internet requests.

Filter Multicast. Multicasting allows for multiple transmissions to specific recipients at the same time. If multicasting is permitted, then the Router will allow IP multicast packets to be forwarded to the appropriate computers. Select Enabled to filter multicasting, or Disabled to disable this feature.

Filter Internet NAT Redirection. This feature uses port forwarding to block access to local servers from local networked computers. Select Enabled to filter Internet NAT redirection, or Disabled to disable this feature.

Filter IDENT (Port 113). This feature keeps port 113 from being scanned by devices outside of your local network. Select Enabled to filter port 113, or Disabled to disable this feature.

Occasionally I see Vonage Forum threads about static that may or may be caused by a router issue. That is the basis of a new Vonage Forum thread entitled Great customer service for a WRTP54G Static Problem.

I just wanted to give kudos where due," writes 02flhrci, who is the Vonage Forum Member who started this thread. I have a WRTP54G behind a WRT54G running Hyperwrt 2.1b1 + Thibor15c firmware. I have Comcast 8mb down with 768 up. For a year, Vonage has worked nearly perfectly for me. Recently I started having terrible static. If I rebooted the WRTP54G, the static would go away for several hours, but it always came back.

"The first thing I did is call Vonage support," 02flhrci adds. "The guy I spoke with (who wasn't very easy to understand) tried 50 different things and said he sent a new Firmware. Again, the static was gone for several hours but then came back. So on this last Monday I sent an email to Vonage using the form on this site. The next day I received a response saying they sent some new settings and to reboot the WRTP54G and see what happened. The static was quieter, but still there.

"I sent another email the next day, and Vonage replied that they think my WRTP54G is defective and they will send me whatever Vonage adapter I want (PAP2, etc)," he then points out.

"I couldn't ask for anything more from Vonage," 02flhrci then points out. "They (Vonage) tried to fix the problem first, they couldn't, and so they are replacing the adapter. I just wanted to be one of the few to post a positive CS experience on here.

"Now...does anybody have a recommendation for what adapter to get ??," he closes his post by asking.

"When they said that they'd sent you any adapter you wanted, did they indicate that it would be free, even if amounted to an upgrade?," Steve48asks. "Since you already have a primary wireless router, the D-link VTA is really all you need.

Then, Steve48 gets to his recommendation.

"However, if you can get whatever you want at no extra cost (reasonable, since your WRTP54G is about top of the line), I'd go with a VT2442," Steve48 writes. "The D-link VWR is more or less the equivalent of what you had, but it doesn't have a good reputation at the moment (firmware issues)."

Steve48 Is Our Vonage Forum Member of the Week

Steve48, whose actual name is Steve Gray, made his 2,500th Vonage Forum post last Thursday. Although Steve hasn't been with us here much longer than a year, he's got the second most number of posts of any Vonage Forum Member. And as you may already know, Steve48 is our current Vonage Forum Member of the Week. I know he was Member of the Week last week as well, but in honor of his 2,500th post, let's give him the honor again this week.

We all owe Steve a big debt of gratitude for his giving of his time and expertise.

Check Out Our New Vonage Forum Toolbar

After a ton of hard work and months of beta testing, I am happy to announce the release of the Vonage Forum Toolbar.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar can provide you with easy desktop access to your Vonage Voicemail as well as total minutes used during your billing period, It works for all, and users.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Tuesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.
