Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 5, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll check up on reports of Vonage blockage in two Middle East locations. We'll go over a newly posted Vonage Forum thread about dropped calls, and a thread about an IP address for a new adapter a Vonage Forum Member is using with his Vonage service.

In The News

Vonage Blocks In Dubai, Qatar Still Lighting Up The Vonage Forum

On an otherwise light news day, I notice that media outlets are picking up on two stories that you Vonage Forum Members first called to light here on the Vonage Forum, and are still making lots of posts about. That would be the Voip and Vonage blocks that have been underway in the Middle Eastern locations of Dubai and Qatar.

To get up to speed on the latest, I suggest you may want to check these Vonage Forum threads: Vonage not active in Dubai, U.A.E. Probable ISP block  (more than 390 threads and more than 19,000 page views), and Loss of Voip in Qatar (more than 265 threads and get this- approaching 34,000 page views)!

Speaking of the Vonage Forum...

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Dropped calls..Do I need Firmware upgrade to Linksys WRTP54G is the title of a new Vonage Forum thread which has been started by new Vonage Forum Member Von420.

"Dropped calls, no call waiting shows up while phone is being used...seems like calls are dropped when another call comes in while first caller is still on," Von420 writes. "What happens is that first call gets dropped and service becomes unavailable and I have to reboot the whole system. Been going on for several days. Called Vonage customer service but they're no help. I'm able to repeat the scenario using my two cell phones. Call from cell-1 and start talking as soon as I call from cell-2 first call gets dropped and no more service, it messes up the whole network, that is to say not even internet service until I reboot the Vonage adaptor Linksys WRTP54G.

"I checked this forum and it seems like my WRTP54G router needs a firmware upgrade (current version is 1.00.20 ) and that might solve the problem," he adds. "How do I get the latest firmware version for the Linksys router WRTP54G?"

Then it turns out that Von420 gets an answer from Ziatonic, who not only is a Vonage Forum Member but happens to be a Vonage representative.

"Yes, you definitely need a firmware update," Ziatronic writes. "There is bit more involved than simply downloading the file and updating. You may find the instructions online, but I suggest you contact Vonage customer support. State that your WRT is dropping calls and still has the old firmware and that all you need is the firmware update and to be transferred to Advanced Service in New Jersey."

Because Vonage Forum Member sumithar has changed adapters and needs the IP address of his new adapter he intends to use with his Vonage service he's begun a Vonage Forum thread entitled IP Address of Adapter

"Just changed my ISP to EarthLink Broadband (effectively Time Warner since they run the cable to my house)," he writes. "I used to have the sequence Cable-Modem/MTA/Router before. I had to move the phone adapter (Motorola Mt100) behind my router after I switched ISP's because my Internet connection kept dropping intermittently and after some research on the web I concluded that EarthLink didn't like my MTA. now internet connection is fine (and so far so is Phone).

"My question is What is the IP address to configure my adapter?," he asks. "It used to 192.168.102.1 or something along those lines.

"Now according to the attached devices panel on my router's configuration page it is shown as 10.10.10.202 (both my PC's I set up in that range)," he then explains. "But when I type in 10.10.10.202 on my browser's address bar it doesn't bring up the MTA's configuration page."

Then, Vonage Forum Member xcrunxc supplies an answer.

"That is the correct IP(192.168.102.1)," xcrunxc writes. "You cannot access the configuration pages through the WAN side of the device as it appears you are trying to do if that is the IP address you are seeing."

Then xcrunxc adds, "you must plug a computer directly into the PC/LAN port on the MTA then browse to 192.168.102.1 for the MTA's configuration pages."

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.Vonag-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Friday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular In The Blogs feature!!
