Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 4, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll read what Vonage Chairman and Chief Strategist Jeffrey Citron says about Vonage in today's USAToday. We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread about D-Link passwords, and about why there is a red light on a phone a user is configured to work with his Vonage service.

In The News

Vonage's Jeffrey Citron Does Interview In USA Today

Vonage (VG) Chairman Jeffrey Citron has done an interview in USAToday, the largest circulation newspaper in the North America. The article, written by Paul Davidson, appears today.

"We (cable companies and Vonage) can both grow nicely at the same time," Citron tells Davidson.

Davidson writes that when he asked Citron about the price level of Vonage's IPO, Citron defended it by noting that the demand for IPO shares exceeded supply by fivefold.

Davidson also writes that Citron says Vonage is on the upswing. "Customer-service problems that led to monthly subscriber turnover of 2.3% this year have largely been solved with the hiring of more representatives, he says. The company narrowed its loss to $74 million in the second quarter, down 14% from the previous quarter."

Then Davidson points out that although Vonage plans to spend more than $360 million on marketing this yea,, cable companies are ramping up their rollouts of VoIP service, typically as part of bundles with video and broadband service that Vonage can't match.

But Citron has a different take on it.

Here's what Davidson writes:

"Citron says Vonage, at $24.99 a month, is far less expensive than cable VoIP service, which generally costs about $40. Vonage, he says, also offers customers the ability to plug a phone and adapter into any broadband line and use their phone number wherever they go."

Then Davidson adds that Citron reiterated to him that Vonage plans to continue to set itself apart with features, such as its V-Phone, which it rolled out this year and lets customers use a small plug-in device to turn any computer into a phone.

Although Davidson then makes it clear that some stock analysts are not big on Vonage, he notes that at least one analyst, Albert Lin of American Technology Research, is upbeat on Vonage. Davidson writes that Lin rates Vonage stock a "buy" and thinks its stock will hit $15 to $18 in the next 18 months.

Davidson then notes Lin says Vonage will continue to appeal to customers "who hate the incumbent" phone and cable companies, and predicts it should turn a profit in 2008 as its "sheer size" finally offsets its high overhead

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member anthonyfellows has begun a Vonage Forum thread that he has entitled, D-Link VWR-VD Default Password.

"What's the default password for the VWR-VD?," he asks. "I can't find it anywhere and I just did a hard reset."

Then Vonage Forum Member xcrunxc sees anthonyfellows question and offers this explanation:

D-Link VWR username: user password:user.

A new Vonage Forum thread called Red light on Phone Line 1 raises an issue I see here from time to time on the Vonage Forum. This thread has been launched by Vonage Forum Member Japra.

"I just woke up (around 4:20AM), and I found out that my Vonage Motorola equipment (the VT442) is flashing a red light on the Phone Line 1 slot," Japra wrote yesterday morning.

"It's a repeated, flashing light," he tells us. "But my Internet/phone line seems to work fine. No problems, but I'm just worried about the light. (Logically, a Red Light indicates something bad)."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member marxus- who I notice has been very active here with his expertise this week- makes his mark with an answer to Japra's question.

"This has something to do with the new firmware on your Motorola device," marxus writes. "The new firmware now includes a phone line voltage detection. is your Vonage device connected to your existing house wiring?

"If it is it might be that excess voltage or current coming from your previous PSTN connection is still on the house wiring line and this is being detected by the Vonage device," he adds..

The next response comes from none other than Steve48- our Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

"This means you have phone mail. After you listen to the phone mail and delete it, the light should go out," Steve48 writes. "Why Motorola chose a red light for this is beyond me, but that's all it is."

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Thursday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
