Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 3, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll read about a new contract Vonage has signed with a company that will help them with billing, distribution and several other services. We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread about the DLink VTA used with the Vonage service, as well as a thread about what could be a router issue that is preventing any kind of connectivity.

In The News

Vonage Signs Contract With Business Services Provider

Brightpoint, Inc. today announced that its subsidiary Brightpoint North America L.P.  has entered into an agreement with Vonage to provide inventory management, order management, national retail EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) integration, retail fulfillment, packaging, accounts receivable management and returns processing for Vonage-branded Voip products into National Retail locations, including the recently released V-Phone.

This is in addition to the National Master Agent agreement between Brightpoint and Vonage, announced on July 14, 2005.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

I've noticed that we often get product comparison info requests as new threads here on the Vonage Forum. Take for example the new thread entitled, Linksys RTP300 vs. Dlink-VTA. The thread has been started by new Vonage Forum Member kuoman.

"I have been using the RTP300 for a while now, I usually travel with it, but due to the size of the RTP300, I recently bought a Dlink VTA," kuoman writes. "But having read some of the bad comments on Dlink VTA, now I don't know if I should call Vonage and swap my number to Dlink VTA... I like the Dlink VTA because it is small, but other than that, it is still in box unopened.... Any suggestions?"

The first response to kuoman's thread-opening post comes from Steve48- our Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

"I've seen more bad comments about the D-link VWR than the VTA, but, for myself, I'd rather keep the RTP300," he writes. "Still, it's a matter of what works best for you.

"If the routing capabilities of the RTP are of no use to you and you travel frequently, the VTA may be just right," Steve48 adds. "I don't think I'd reject it just on the basis of a little bad press in here."

Next, fellow Vonage Forum Member marxus follows up with some additional advice.

"You can transfer your number from one device to another in your VonageOn-line Web Account," marxus writes. "Just log in and go to the ADD-ONS link and there's an option to MOVE-A-NUMBER."

Marxus then points out that doing this will give you a list of available Vonage devices and numbers in your account and let you manage the number transfers.

It seems that because new Vonage Forum Member smith83's brother can't seem to get a connection via his new Motorola VT2442 he is wanting to use with his Vonage service, smith83 has decided to launch a new Vonage Forum thread with the name,  VT2442 Cant even go online.

"I just got a VT2442 device and my brother has been trying to install it with no success. He said that he thinks that the problem is that the power LED is blinking, it's solid for a while, then it blinks then solid for another while and so on," smith83 tells us.

"What does that mean? According to the manual it's supposed to stay online all the time.

"They have DSL at home. What exactly do they need to get from their provider to get it to work? I'm not even talking about the phone service yet, it doesn't even work as a router, meaning, he can't go online at all," smith83 explains.

Then smith83 tells us his brother mentioned that the Ethernet LED is on but can't go online, and that he followed the instructions and that in the PPPoE he put his username and password of the DSL provider. It still doesn't work.

"I was dumb and didn't try it at home before sending it to my family (overseas) so now I'm afraid something is wrong with the device," smith68 ends his post by writing.

Once again proving his qualifications as Vonage Forum Member of the Week, Steve48's first up.

"The number of blinks when it's blinking should tell you something about what's going on," he writes. "One blink means the VT2442 is just starting up.

"Two means it's trying to get its IP address," Steve48 adds. "Three means it's downloading firmware from Vonage (don't interfere with or interrupt this!). Four means it's trying to make contact with the Vonage server.

"I would surmise that it's hanging up at 2 blinks," Steve48 guesses. "Is that correct? It might indicate that your brother hasn't quite got the WAN setup right."

"What is your modem?," adds fellow Vonage Forum Member e04855. "Maybe you can provide the model number."

Then e04855 mentions that if you have set PPPoE on the router and it doesn't work, PPPoE maybe set somewhere else (maybe on your modem).

"Post your modem model number and lets take it from there," e04855 suggests to smith68.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Wednesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
