Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

October 2, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll read about an accusation carried in a Slashdot thread about untruths one big Vonage competitor is telling about Vonage's service. We'll go over two Vonage Forum threads about router issues. And this is Monday, when we meet our new Vonage Forum Member of the Week

In The News

Slashdot Poster Links To Post Accusing Comcast Is Lying About Vonage

"Apparently, Comcast is trying some new tricks to get people to sign up for its version of VoIP, 'Comcast Digital Voice,' according to Wang (of WangScript fame).," a Slashdot poster named jehnx writes today. From the blog post: 'Today my wife received a phone call from a Comcast representative who had called to promote their new "Comcast Digital Voice" service... Ordinarily, we don't mind Comcast calling us from time to time with new offers... [but this time] they proceeded to tell LIE after LIE in an attempt to convince us that Vonage was not as good as Comcast Digital Voice. Imagine how many people would be scared into using Comcast Digital Voice because Comcast makes them believe that Vonage is insecure and only works when your PC is turned on.' Is Comcast going a bit far in their techniques to lure in new customers?"

Here's the link to the Slashdot post, and then to the original post the Slashdot poster is referring to here.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member mikebell begins a Vonage Forum thread that he has entitled, VT2442 and QoS? How to make it more aggressive?.

"I've been a happy Vonage user for few months and love the Motorola VT2442 router!," he writes.

I've been wondering if anyone could offer me some advice... I download a lot and I use bittorrent quite frequently. When I use BT and Vonage phone at the same time, the phone's service sounds just awful," mikebell admits.

" Is there a way to set VT2442 so that when the phone is in use, it throttles all other activity and gives full amount of bandwidth to the voice?," he asks. Then he says he has looked into VT2442's settings and IP QoS is enabled:

Enable IPQoS: Checked
Trusted Mode: Checked

"Is there anything else I could do to give even more priority to voice traffic once it's in use?," mikebell ends his thread-opening post by asking.

Steve48 is the first to respond to mikebell's question.

"You probably won't like this answer, but I suspect the best solution to that problem is to get a really good router and put it in front of the VT2442," Steve48 writes. "The Vonage routers are notoriously poor at demanding network applications."

Then Steve48 suggests to mikebell that he ought to also keep in mind  that the QoS settings can't do a heck of a lot on the downlink except clear traffic as quickly as possible. "They can't prevent other traffic from being given priority at the other end of the pipe," Steve48 emphasizes.

Next, new Vonage Forum Member Nocturnal writes a post about his experiences related to this issue that mikebell has raised.

"At first I plugged my VT2442 into my Belkin Pre-N router," Nocturnal writes. "This worked fine except under load. I then reversed the connection and QoS seems to be properly applied."

Port Forwarding Help using Linksys router and Vonage is new Vonage Forum thread with a title about a subject that comes up on the Vonage Forum from time to time.

"I'm currently using a Linksys wireless router and have it set to forward ports to IPs set as 192.168.1.2 but my Vonage box is set up as ip address 192.168.15.1 which come after the Linksys," writes Vonage Forum Member conker, who started the thread. "Do I have to change the IP address of the vonage and forward ports to the Vonage box and the from Vonage box to the correct computers?"

Turns out that one of conker's main motivations for doing this is that he is trying to host World of Warcraft games- and he has forwarding for Warcraft3 set correctly but it isn't working.

"Vonage gives my computers IP addresses 192.168.15.2 and higher so I don't think I can forward a port through the Linksys when all i can do through Linksys is 192.168.1.XXX," conker points out. "So should I change the Vonage IPS to 192.168.1.2?"

Once again Steve48  is first responder.

"Ordinarily you do not have to forward ports for Vonage," he points out. "Your games may be a different story, but I don't think it's a good idea to run gaming computers through a Vonage router/adapter in the first place. The Vonage boxes just aren't up to it."

Then Steve48 suggests to conker that he might want to use the Vonage box as an adapter only, plugged into the Linksys, and plug the gaming computers directly into the Linksys as well.

"Adjust QoS on the Linksys to favor the Vonage box to make sure you get the needed bandwidth when you're on the phone," Steve48 adds.

Steve48 Is Our Vonage Forum Member of the Week

As you might have read in those two Vonage Forum threads I just highlighted, Steve48 was the first to answer each. That's nothing unusual for Steve, who has had another great week and by the way, is starting to close in on 2,500 posts. So who better this week to select as Vonage Forum Member of the Week than Steve48? To browse some of Steve48's most recent posts, click here.

Check Out Our New Vonage Forum Toolbar

After a ton of hard work and months of beta testing, I am happy to announce the release of the Vonage Forum Toolbar.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar can provide you with easy desktop access to your Vonage Voicemail as well as total minutes used during your billing period, It works for all Vonage.com, Vonage.ca and Vonage.uk users.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar works with Internet Explorer and Firefox.

If you have questions, or comments, I've made a NEW Vonage Forum Toolbar Thread. Here's the direct link.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Tuesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
