Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 29, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll read about a new promotion between Vonage and HP. We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread about a Vonage gateway issue. And this is Friday, which is our In The Blogs day.

In The News

Vonage Announces Special Offer With HP

Just this morning, announced a special Vonage phone service offer for HP and Compaq consumer PC customers in the U.S. and Canada. With the purchase of an HP or Compaq consumer desktop or notebook, customers can get a special offer on Vonage's residential premium unlimited plan.

"HP provides a terrific platform to deliver many of our new and advanced communication experiences," says Michael Tribolet, president of Vonage America Inc. "HP and Compaq PC customers now have access to feature-rich communication services for up to half of what they would pay for traditional phone service."

HP and Compaq consumer desktop and notebook PCs in the U.S. and Canada will contain either a Vonage brochure or an interactive CD-ROM in the PC box explaining details about the service. The brochure will outline the benefits of Vonage service, including integrated communications services, a broad range of features, and contact management. Customers can sign-up via their computer desktop or contact a toll-free number to receive the special offer for Vonage service.

"HP is committed to providing customers with all the tools they need to enjoy their digital lives," adds Bob Lund, general manager of Worldwide Beyond-the-Box Group, HP. "We are pleased to be working with Vonage because they offer a portfolio of advanced communications ranging from PC-based phone services to full-featured residential and small-business broadband phone services."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Because Vonage Forum Member sandeepbh had a question about the gateway he (I think sandeepbh is a he) is using with his Vonage service, he went about starting up a Vonage Forum thread that he naturally named, Vonage Gateway.

"I am facing an issue with the Voip due to the latency. I am having quite a lot jittering and breaking + weird noise," he explains. "I consulted my ISP and they said they can set a best static route for my packets.-however i need the ip address of the Vonage gateway where the ATA tries to reach. This is the only way i improve the quality."

Vonage Forum Member shaik has the answer:

He writes, that the Vonage gateway for ATA is:

110#; Subnet
mask: 120#; Gateway: 130#; MAC Address: 140 ... Cisco ATA: Have the customer connect ... (or)64.192.151.15..for the gateway>

In The Blogs

We read about 15 Voip and IP-telephony-related Weblogs. Some we read more than others, but we enjoy most of them. Face it, bloggers are opinion-shapers. So today, we are going to give you a round-up of what the blogs we read have said about Vonage recently.

Here's what the Voip bloggers have been writing about:

Rich Tehrani of VoIP Blog calls a new Vonage promotion with Amazon a "great idea." A co-worker received his Amazon.com order, and in the box was a Vonage flyer.

Alec Saunders of Alec Saunders .LOG doesn't write about Vonage this week, but he does write about some of the other calling services he has tried lately.

Andy Abramson of VoIP Watch writes his thoughts about Vonage as a service provider.

Jeff Pulver of Pulver.com has lots of posts about the Fall VON show, which Pulver owns and just ended a week ago yesterday in Boston. He has even posted a video of his keynote address..

Om Malik of Om Malik's Broadband Blog recently wrote about where he sees Vonage heading, in the light of Vonage's announcement earlier this month they now have more than two million subscribers.

Tom Keating of VoIP Blog writes about his experiences canceling Vonage's service. By the way, several Vonage Forum Members took Tom to task for this. There's a Vonage Forum thread about this issue, which has been named, Tom Keating Cancels Vonage Service.

Mark Evans of the Telecom .. and Tech blog (he's from Canada, which is a northern country, and writes more posts about telecom and tech) links to Tom's post.

Russell Shaw of the ZDNet IP Telephony blog also links to Tom's post. And in a post not related to Vonage but which I noticed got a lot of pickup earlier this week, Russ wrote an investigatory article about why Apple seems to be having such big problems with the use of the word, "podcast."

Paul Kapustka of the Paul Kapustka blog is very skeptical about some of these polls going around that seems to indicate the American public doesn't want net neutrality. Recently, he wrote about Vonage Chairman and Chief Strategist Jeff Citron's Fall VON 2006 keynote speech.

PhoneBoy of the PhoneBoy blog has been doing a lot of video blogging.

Garrett Smith of the Smith On Voip blog writes about some new Voip phones, including a new Linksys phone. He doesn't mention this directly, but some of these sets can be used with Vonage's service.

Ken Camp of the Realtime-VoIP also links to Tom's post. He also criticizes some of these new Voip services that work with your cell phone.

Cynthia Brumfield of IP Democracy writes about some of the problems parts of rural and small town American have been experiencing getting broadband services- which are, of course necessary for Vonage connections.

From time to time, we like to feature interesting and entertaining posts from Blogs that are not necessarily about VoIP, but mention Vonage. I came across this new blog morning and it's called Geeking Out. I liked it so much I will repeat it in this Friday's Digest. In a post entitled "Hurray For VoIP," blogger Mike Dao writes, "VOIP is definitely an attractive solution for people that are looking to drastically reduce their phone bills. My parents are even customers. They had been paying a good deal of money for their regular phone bill. My mother didn’t even like making calls much because intrastate long distance is pretty expensive. For some strange reason, LD calls instate are generally more expensive than phone calls made across state lines. They use Vonage, and for additional information, I suggest checking out these Vonage Forums. Its an independent support site that has news, reviews, and just a ton of information. It is a great start if you are new to the technology, not only does it have reviews but the latest in Voip news, and of course, forums. Take a look.

Thanks for the plug, Mike. I'll return the favor. Here's a link to Mike's "Hurray for VoIP" post.

Vonage Forum Reaches 29 Million Page Views

Last night, right around the dinner hour, I was online and I had noticed that we had just exceeded 29 million page views since the Vonage Forum started back in March, 2003. Every time you click on a Vonage Forum page, that is another page view. So let's see how quickly we can get to 30 million! Hey, maybe we'll have a contest to guess on what day and what time we reach that mark!

Check Out Our New Vonage Forum Toolbar

After a ton of hard work and months of beta testing, I am happy to announce the release of the Vonage Forum Toolbar.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar can provide you with easy desktop access to your Vonage Voicemail as well as total minutes used during your billing period, It works for all Vonage.com, Vonage.ca and Vonage.uk users.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar works with Internet Explorer and Firefox.

If you have questions, or comments, I've made a NEW Vonage Forum Toolbar Thread. Here's the direct link.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Monday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular Vonage Forum Member of the Week feature!!
