Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 28, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Because today is a slow news day, we'll go right to two Vonage Forum threads, one about a router provisioning issue, and the other one about a Vonage-DirecTV setup.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

A new Vonage Forum thread called VT2442 Suddenly Not Provisioning has been started by new Vonage Forum Member jjk5.

"I've had my VT2442 working reliably for months now. This morning I woke up and had no dial tone," he writes. "I checked my PC to make sure the net wasn't down and it was working normally. "I was able to make a phone call before bed last night, so whatever happened to the VT2442 happened overnight."

Then jjk5 adds that he can login to the device from his computer. "Currently the internet led is solid green and the power led is blinking in a "long-short-short-long" type sequence.

"I've powercycled and all that but it still won't provision," he adds. "I've made no recent changes to my network and certainly nothing was changed while I was sleeping. What could be happening and does anyone know the LED blink codes for the VT2442?."

After adding the results of his VIP speed test, jjk5 receives comments from two of our most knowledgeable and always helpful members.

"Well, the manual says that 2 blinks means it's getting its IP and 4 blinks means it's connecting to Vonage," writes Steve48.

"Do you get Internet service if you plug you PC into a LAN port on the VT2442 instead of directly into the WRT54G?," he asks. "If you temporarily remove the WRT and plug the VT directly into your modem, does that change anything?"

Next, fellow Vonage Forum Member xcrunxc offers a specific suggestion.

He writes, "long -short -short -long is pause - blink - blink - pause. That is two blinks. You device is not able to obtain an IP address from the DHCP server on your WRT54G. Try putting the VT2442 directly into the modem and see if it works."

A happy jjk5 comes back with a progress report. And it seems there has been a lot of it.

"Well it's resolved, I'm just not really sure how," he writes. "I connected the VT2442 directly to the modem and set its WAN settings to DHCP and it still couldn't grab an IP. Then I reset it and it still didn't work."

But this is where things all of a sudden started to resolve itself for jjk5.

"Then I reconnected it to the WRT54G and for whatever reason it started provisioning... very strange," he writes. "I've set its WAN port to a static IP again and it's still working fine."

And jjk5 will take it. "I'm clueless as to what could have happened but I'm glad it's going again," he writes.

New Vonage Forum Member Aravind wants to run Vonage in conjunction with his DirecTV satellite dish setup," where a call is initiated by DirecTV over the phone system the subscriber is using in order to refresh the program information available on screen. To find out about all that, he decided to open a new Vonage Forum thread that he named, Direct Tv connection setup.

"When I had Qwest telephone service I used to connect the direct tv to the wall jack in order to get the updates of the cable television," he writes. How can i get updates if use Vonage after transferring the phone no from qwest to Vonage where should to connect DirecTV to the phone or somewhere else/"

First up is rgnok.

"You can connect the DirecTV to the wall jack IF you setup your Vonage service for whole house wiring.," he writes. "There is a complete section on this site dedicated to hard wiring and whole house distribution of your Vonage, so please check it out."

By that, rgnok is referring to the Hard Wiring-Installation Forum on the Vonage Forum. That Forum's main page is here.

"Also, please check out ANOTHER whole section on this dedicated to Fax, TiVo, and DirecTV issues. Vonage and DirecTV work together. I have both and it works fine," he adds. "Don't let anyone tell you that it won't work. That being said -- there are certainly issues with Vonage and DirecTV (or any data type dial-out, like alarms, TiVo, Dish, etc.). So get familiar with those issues upfront and avoid surprises later!"

In that last paragraph, rgnok is talking about the Vonage Fax, TiVo and Alarms Forum. That's located here.

"I agree that you can leave it where it is if you have the house hardwired," writes fellow Vonage Forum Member chinka01. "What I have done (I have Dish network) was buy a splitter and put it into the back of my Vonage adapter and run a telco cord, you can buy them in up to 100 ft lengths."

He then explains how he did this.

:From the back of your Dish reciever to one opening in the splitter and connect your phone into the next one or as I did run a phone cord from the second opening in the splitter to my wall jack and BOOM hard wired house," he writes, adding advice to Aravind to be sure to isolate your house wiring from your his old telco the NID/NIU)...

The Vonage Forum Toolbar can provide you with easy desktop access to your Vonage Voicemail as well as total minutes used during your billing period, It works for all, and users.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar works with Internet Explorer and Firefox.

If you have questions, or comments, I've made a NEW Vonage Forum Toolbar Thread. Here's the direct link.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I noticed today that both of the threads I have highlighted included the thread-starters posting the results of their Voip Speed Test.

That's another good reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Friday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular In The Blogs feature!
