Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

In the news, we'll catch up with Vonage's E911 service. We'll go over two Vonage Forum threads, each about a different Vonage call-quality issue.

In The News

Vonage Expands E911 Calling Areas

Vonage yesterday announced that over 90% of its U.S. subscriber lines are now equipped with Enhanced 911 (E911) service -- a feature that automatically associates a physical address with the calling party's telephone number.

In less than one month, Vonage has equipped an additional 250 locally-run emergency call centers across the U.S. with E911 -- bringing the total number of calling centers with emergency 911 service to over 5800.

Vonage's nomadic E911 solution gives customers the ability to reach a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), or 911 center, through the dedicated 911 network infrastructure. With Vonage's nomadic E911 solution, a customer's call is automatically routed to the appropriate 911 center, with the caller's registered street address and telephone number appearing on the dispatcher screen -- regardless of where or what exchange they are calling from. Vonage will continue to turn up and test new PSAPs that are VoIP-ready every day.

"Today over 90 percent of our U.S. subscriber lines have full E911 capability, which is a tremendous step for Vonage," says Vonage CEO Michael Snyder. "Vonage will continue to work with the FCC, regulators, Congress and public safety until PSAPs across the nation are equipped with E911."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

In a new Vonage Forum thread named Callers can't hear reliably, Vonage Forum Member dcwebman describes the problem he alludes to in that Vonage Forum thread he started.

"I have a Motorola VT2442 set with a static IP address behind a Linksys WRT54G using the 2 cable method," he writes.." I can hear callers perfectly but they have a tough time hearing me as it breaks up while I'm talking." 

Then, dcwebman writes that he has tried a couple Voip speed tests with the Linksys QoS for the VT2442 port disabled and set at high. He follows that post up with the results of his Vonage Voip Speed Test, a procedure he had just performed before starting this thread and which we describe in the Digest.

Two fellow Vonage Forum Members offer their ideas. First up is canibus23.

"First I would put the Motorola 2442 in front of your wireless router," canibus23 writes. "Obviously this is a bandwidth issue," adding that if dcwebman wants to leave his current setup in place, he will probably have do some port forwarding.

NateHoy, who is our Vonage Forum Member of the Week, is next.

"Generally, stutter as heard on the other end indicates some sort of bandwidth problem," NateHoy writes, asking dcwebman if he has QoS set up on his WRT54G?

"I have found, in my limited experience with Vonage devices, that their QoS is sadly lacking," writes Nate, who has the third-most amount of posts of any of you Vonage Forum Members. "However, the WRT54G needs to be configured properly in order to work."

Then, to end his post, Nate provides a link to an article in which he wrote and linked from the Vonage Forum site  information on QoS and some tips on how to make it work:

Because new Vonage Forum Member skywalkm has been hearing the sounds of buttons pressing during some of his Vonage calls, he's gone about opening a new Vonage Forum thread to which he has given the name, Button Presses During a Call.

"While on a call, frequently both parties will hear what sounds like button presses," skywalkm writes, then adding the results of his Voip speed test that I describe below.

Following up with a description of similar experiences is Vonage Forum Member jwlionking, who like skywalkm, seems to have a Vonage Forum user name taken from the movies (skywalkm reminds me of Luke Skywalker from "Star Wars," and then of course, there's "The Lion King" movie).

Anyways, jwlionking says he has been a Vonage Forum Member for two years and has had similar button press experiences.

And then here comes NateHoy again, living up to his current title as Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

"VoIP is a little different than regular telephone. One of the differences is that Voip frequently cannot carry DTMF tones properly, so VoIP devices listen for DTMF tones and reproduce them on the remote side," NateHoy writes.

"My mother's voice, and several people I conference with frequently, send out occasional sounds that my WRTP54G thinks are tones, so it reproduces them," he explains.

"I think, hidden in the setup screens I cannot get to, there are sensitivity settings for tone regeneration," NateHoy says. "You may get someone on Vonage tech support to set your device to be less sensitive. I just got used to it."

The first reply Nate's explanation gets here is from jwlionking, who seems relieved that after two years of wondering about these button pressing noises, finally knows what they are about.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I noticed today that both of the threads I have highlighted included the thread-starters posting the results of their Voip Speed Test. 

That's another good reason to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75
