Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 26, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll read a heart-warming story about a Vonage Web site designer. We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread about a router problem that might be firmware-related, and then a question about a MAC on a Mac. Read on and you'll see what I mean by that.

In The News

For An Immigrant Family's Son, Vonage Career Is Proving Successful

Now here's a story that will warm your heart. The Press newspaper of Atlantic City, New Jersey, has an article about hard-working immigrant families such as Man Ching and Cheong Ming Chan. They work in casino restaurants in that gambling-oriented resort, and have put two children through college so far on a combined wage now about $60,000 a year.

Article writer Timothy Puko writes that at 28 years old, John Chan has an apartment in Jersey City, works as an electrical engineer at ITT Electronic Systems in Clifton and already makes about as much money each year as his parents do combined. His youngest brother is still in high school, but the middle child is a Web designer with Vonage.

Oh and if you want to read this article, here's the link.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Because new Vonage Forum Member cyberhiker has been hearing static by means of the Linksys RTP300 router he is using with his Vonage service, he decided to air his questions in a new Vonage Forum thread that he's started off and named, RTP300 Static.

"I have an RTP300 behind a NetGear FVS318," he writes. "I had to move it behind the router because of 1.01.07 problems. Since then, I have gotten a lot of static."

Then , cyberhiker adds that he I has rebooted everything, and has hard reset the RTP300.

"I have setup port forwarding on the FVS318 for the RTP30," he adds.." So I am not sure that it is specifically a 'behind the router' issue, but if you have anything else I can try I would appreciate it."

Two of cyberhiker's fellow Vonage Forum Members step up with their take on the issue he has described. Both have been Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

The first is Steve48.

"I would start by moving the RTP300 back in front of the router (temporarily) to confirm that the problem goes away with that placement," Steve48 writes. "Assuming that it does, and also assuming that it worked OK before the firmware 'upgrade', I'd call customer service and ask to be downgraded. I see in the thread discussing the issue that at least one of us has been able to stay downgraded for a couple of days."

And then you have xcrunxc who offers his take on this.

"Steve is correct," xcrunxc states. "Static on the RTP300 is one known issue with the 1.01.07 firmware upgrade.

"Getting the firmware downgraded should fix this until the actually release a firmware that works," he suggests.

"I figured it was something like that," cyberhiker comes back to the thread to post. "I will try to put it as a peer to the router, but can't move it in front. I have already had too much downtime as a result of this 'upgrade.' "

Over on the Hard Wiring-Installation Forum  section of the Vonage Forums, Vonage Forum Member saskia has a question about a MAC address on a Mac.

"I need to do a MAC Cloning with a Macintosh laptop," writes saskia. "Does anyone know the commands to see the physical address and IP of a Macintosh?"

Fellow Vonage Forum Member stardust has the exact answer.

"Click apple icon -choose system preferences - choose netwrk - choose show all and look for Ethernet address," stardust writes.

"Wowww!! Thank you Stardust!! I needed so much this info," saskia writes in a note of thanks.

Check Out Our Vonage Hard Wiring-Installation Forum

On account of us using a thread from the Hard Wiring-Installation Forum  section of the Vonage Forums in today's Digest, I thought it might be a good idea to tell you more about that Forum. It's one of our more popular Forums, with more than 540 topics and 3,140 posts.

Although hooking up Vonage for service is not difficult at all, new as well as experienced Vonage users sometimes have questions about the right technical setup. Other new and experienced Vonage Forum Members that are moving sometimes post threads here about hard wiring and installation in the place where they have just moved to or are about to. In the main page of the Hard Wiring-Installation Forum- which I just linked to in the last paragraph- you will find a linked list of threads about the issues reflected in the title of this Vonage Forum area.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Wednesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
