Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

In the news, we'll learn of a new router-adaptor product from Motorola, which is configured for Vonage service. We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread about too many Vonage busy signals, as well as a thread about fast pulses before dial tones on a Vonage line. And this is Monday, which is the day we meet our Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

Vonage, Motorola Introduce the New VT2142 Router

Just this morning, Vonage and Motorola announced the availability of the Motorola VT2142. This is a new device with a single port router and 2-line telephone adaptor, configured with Vonage's service. It is being sold on the Vonage website at no cost after a $49.99* instant rebate. It isn't yet available in stores, but Vonage says it will be.

"As Vonage always seeks to offer a variety of hardware choices, we are pleased to offer Motorola's new product for our less expensive, flat-rate, full-featured calling plans. Motorola is a proven partner and we are happy to add another one of its devices to our portfolio," says Daniel Smires, senior vice president of Engineering of Vonage Network Inc. "Expanding our device offering with Motorola enables us to continue offering consumer-friendly, feature-rich voice terminal technologies -- a simple way for consumers to benefit from Vonage's attractively priced, tiered calling plans."

The product incorporates Texas Instruments' TNETV1060 Voip gateway chipset.

Vonage says this product represents the continuation of Vonage's relationship with Motorola, which provides Vonage with several products including the Motorola VT1005 and the Motorola VT2442.

In some nations, the term "engaged tone" means pretty much the same as "busy signal." I wanted to point that out so you would understand what new Vonage Forum Member soham, who is from India, is referring to in the thread he started and named, Outgoing calls don't go thru - always getting engaged tone.

After going over his setup and posting his Vonage test results, soham then gets into the issue he is experiencing.

"Only outgoing calls are not going through. Incoming calls are working and call quality is fine," explains. "I'm also getting dial tone. 

So far so good, but then soham then describes his problems. 

"But outgoing calls fail. when I dial any number, I start getting engaged tone and outgoing calls don't go through," he writes. "Mine is a new setup and this is happening from day 1. I have reset all the units many times over last couple of days but there is no improvement.

"I've tried connecting 3 different phones to Vonage adapter - issue persists with each of those," he adds.

Two Vonage Forum Members with lots of knowledge and experience take the time to answer with posts they hope will help soham towards a solution.

"What I think is going on is that b/c you have 2 routers, GLB-502T and the WRT54G, when you make a call, it is not being routed properly and it gets rejected," writes mundy5.

Then mundy5 asks soham as to whether or not it would be possible to do a setup like this: 

DSL -> Modem/Router (GLB-502T) -> PAP2 and see if all calls (i.e. incoming and outgoing) work?

"By eliminating the wrt54g from the setup, you might get the outgoing to work," mundy5 asks.

Then mundy5 asks soham, "why do you need the wrt54g, is it purely for wireless connectivity? If so, you can connect both the wrt54g and the PAP2 into the GLB-502T instead of connecting the PAP2 into the wrt54g.

"In other words, I think the 2 routers in front of the PAP2 is causing the problem for you and unless you reconfigure it, you will continue to have issues," he adds. "It's not your phone that is the problem."

"Agreed," writes Steve48. "Also, you have some horrendous pauses and turn-around times," he adds, suggesting that soham plug his computer into the primary router and re-run the test. 

"If the 3 phones are all 2.4 GHz cordless phones," he adds, "please try with a simple corded one."

An interesting new Vonage Forum thread called Fast pulsing before dial tone on D-Link VTA has been launched by new Vonage Forum Member redeno.

On his thread-opening post, redeno writes that "recently when I pick up the phone to dial out I get a quick, pulsing tone for a few seconds and then it all of a sudden stops pulsing and becomes the regular dial tone. I've had Vonage for a few months now and am using the D-Link VTA adaptor behind a M0n0wall BSD based router (port forwarded and all that jazz), and this just started. 

"My phone handset will also say 'new message' on the display--meaning that it thinks I have a voicemail, but there is nothing in my voicemail box," redeno then adds. Any ideas as to what's going on?"

"That is in fact the voicemail waiting tone. If you don't have any voicemails, leave yourself one," writes xcrunxc. "Log in and delete it via your phone remembering to log out all the way using * and it should reset the voicemail indicator tone."

Vonage Stock Report

On Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $7.14 a share, which was an increase of seven cents +0.99) from Thursday's  $7.07 a share closing price and an increase of 11 cents from the $7.03 session low.  Total Vonage shares traded on Friday were calculated to be 275,200 shares.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75
