Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 22, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll read about a promotion that offers three free months of Vonage service. We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread about Vonage voice mail.. And this is Friday, which is our In The Blogs day.

In The News

Vonage Canada teams up with BelAirTravel

Vonage Canada has teamed up with BelAirTravel on a promotion that will give many customers who book their winter vacation with BelAirTravel to receive an offer of three months of free residential phone services. That's a $270 value. Scratch, Save & Win cards will be distributed across Canada through leading newspapers, locations, and partners Esso, which will distribute cards at select locations. Online shoppers can find their own 'Virtual Scratch Card' at

Every card is a winner, with savings of 10, 12 or 15% off winter vacation packages from Canada's leading travel suppliers. (Bookings must be made between Sept. 23 and Nov. 30 for departures from Dec. 1, 2006 through April 30, 2007. Minimum purchase of $999 required.) Each card also contains a 'Bonus' scratch code that can be keyed in at, entering consumers into a daily draw featuring prizes including trips for two, luggage, Plasma TV's, Pizza Pizza products and more.

And as to the Vonage tie-in: those booking their winter vacation with will receive an exclusive value-added offer from Vonage, giving customers three months FREE residential phone services including unlimited local and long distance calling. The retail value for this offer is $270.

Speaking of Vonage Canada, we have a Vonage Canada Forum here on our Vonage Forums. Here's the link.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

On a new Vonage Forum thread that is named, missing messages!, new Vonage Forum Member firefly34 asks a question about an issue that I have seen being raised on the Vonage Forum before.

"I looked around and didn't see this answered elsewhere," firefly34 starts out the thread by noting. "I am missing voicemails. I haven't received on in a good 2 months, when I know there are some on there.

Next, firefly writes that his mom called today and said  she left a message "but when I go online, there are no new messages in my inbox. My phone flashes that I have messages but I cant retrieve them. What's up with this? How can this be fixed???"

Well, firefly34, most of us know how important it is that we get the message our Mom leaves for us. And it seems that fellow Vonage Forum Member sirkism knows this, too.

"Have you tried checking your voicemail from your phone? sometimes you have to delete the messages from the *123 option and then disable voicemail and enable it back," writes sirkism. "This should solve your issues with messages.

"Don't ask me why this works, but it has worked before," sirkism adds.

In The Blogs

We read about 15 Voip and IP-telephony-related Weblogs. Some we read more than others, but we enjoy most of them. Face it, bloggers are opinion-shapers. So today, we are going to give you a round-up of what the blogs we read have said about Vonage recently.

Here's what the Voip bloggers have been writing about:

Rich Tehrani of VoIP Blog wrote about the fact that he is glad Vonage now has E911 capability in Los Angeles. He also wrote earlier this week about how important he believes Vonage Chairman Jeffrey Citron has been to the growth of VoIP.

Alec Saunders of Alec Saunders .LOG writes about his impressions of this month's Fall 2006 VON show in Boston, which Alec attended and where Jeff Citron gave a keynote address.

Andy Abramson of VoIP Watch has been writing about the fact that he believes Skype has a lot of technical problems.

Jeff Pulver of has lots of posts about the Fall VON show, which Pulver owns and just ended a week ago yesterday in Boston. He has even posted a video of his keynote address..

Om Malik of Om Malik's Broadband Blog recently wrote about where he sees Vonage heading, in the light of Vonage's announcement earlier this month they now have more than two million subscribers.

Tom Keating of VoIP Blog writes about, which helps Vonage provide technology for home alarm system to send alerts to security companies over Vonage connections.

Mark Evans of the Telecom .. and Tech blog (he's from Canada, which is a northern country, and writes more posts about telecom and tech) writes about what he sees as Vonage's business challenges.

Russell Shaw of the ZDNet IP Telephony blog wrote about why Vonage's announcement that it has contracted for on-premise installation services in 39 U.S. cities not only makes sense, but is a great idea, too. I happen to agree.

Paul Kapustka of the Paul Kapustka blog is very skeptical about some of these polls going around that seems to indicate the American public doesn't want net neutrality. Last week, he wrote about Vonage Chairman and Chief Strategist Jeff Citron's Fall VON 2006 keynote speech.

PhoneBoy of the PhoneBoy blog has been doing a lot of video blogging.

Garrett Smith of the Smith On Voip blog writes about some new Voip phones, including a new Linksys phone. He doesn't mention this directly, but some of these sets can be used with Vonage's service.

Ken Camp of the Realtime-VoIP offers his thoughts on what he thinks of the effect of Vonage's "Woo-Hoo" television ads on Vonage's business. Don't let me forget to mention: we nearly 20 of Vonage's television ads archived and available for viewing on the Vonage TV Commercials Forum section of the Vonage Forum. Here's the link!

Cynthia Brumfield of IP Democracy writes about the attitudes and plans of two of Vonage's cable competitors about net neutrality and other competitive concerns. If you use Vonage over a broadband Internet connection supplied by a cable tv company, you should read these posts to learn what these carriers want to do.

From time to time, we like to feature interesting and entertaining posts from Blogs that are not necessarily about VoIP, but mention Vonage. I came across this new blog morning and it's called Geeking Out. In a post entitled "Hurray For VoIP," blogger Mike Dao writes, "VOIP is definitely an attractive solution for people that are looking to drastically reduce their phone bills. My parents are even customers. They had been paying a good deal of money for their regular phone bill. My mother didn’t even like making calls much because intrastate long distance is pretty expensive. For some strange reason, LD calls instate are generally more expensive than phone calls made across state lines. They use Vonage, and for additional information, I suggest checking out these Vonage Forums. Its an independent support site that has news, reviews, and just a ton of information. It is a great start if you are new to the technology, not only does it have reviews but the latest in Voip news, and of course, forums. Take a look.

Thanks for the plug, Mike. I'll return the favor. Here's a link to Mike's "Hurray for VoIP" post.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.
