Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 19, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll learn about an interesting new promotion by Vonage Canada intended to ease the "moving experience." We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread about dial tones associated with Vonage service, as well as another thread about the possibility of a Vonage hookup through a wireless router and network bridge.

In The News

Vonage Canada Offers Promotion To Ease Moving Hassles

To further simplify Canadians' moving experiences, Vonage Canada today announced two new promotions:

Canadians can now make the move to Vonage phone service through a special offer available at www.smartmoves.ca. Smartmoves is a service of Canada Post,
(which is similar to the United States Postal Service in the U.S.) which provides Canadians with the opportunity to change their address online.

When Canadians go to the smartmoves web site they will have the opportunity to sign up for Vonage home phone service and receive one month of free service and free activation.

"The smartmoves web site was created to make it easier for Canadians to change their address, organize their move, and get access to great offers from
businesses like Vonage," said John Mitchell, Canada Post manager, smartmoves program. "By teaming up with Vonage we are able to make moving your household that much easier and less expensive."

Additionally, AMJ Campbell, Canada's leading moving company will provide all prospective customers with a special offer when they switch to Vonage phone
service.

"When our sales people provide prospective customers with a quote for our moving service, the customer will receive a Vonage coupon. The coupon will
allow our customers to receive one free month of Vonage service, and they will not pay additional activation fees when they switch to Vonage phone service,"
said Denis Cordick, vice president, marketing, AMJ Campbell Van Lines. "At AMJ Campbell we make it easier for Canadians to move from one place to another,
and now with the help of Vonage, we are making the moving experience even easier."

"Vonage phone service is a popular option for Canadians looking to save money on their monthly phone bill. Whether it is through AMJ Campbell Van Lines or smartmoves.ca, Canadians on the go can now take a little of the stress out of their move," adds Bruce Robertson, director, product marketing and programs, Vonage Canada.

By the way, we have a Vonage Canada Forum here on the Vonage Forums. Check it out. Here's the direct link.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Dial Tone beeping is a new Vonage Forum thread that has been launched by Vonage Forum Member nytro.

on this thread  nytro writes that he thought the beeping of the Dial Tone told him he had a new voice mail, but since he has had his Vonage mail shut off, he wants to know what else it could be.

"I thought I would check my inbox anyway, but it's empty!," he writes. What else could be causing the beeping?"

"Sometimes the voice mail stutter tone gets a little screwed up," points out Steve48, who once again is our Vonage Forum Member of the Week. "First try power cycling your adapter.

"If that doesn't fix it, try enabling voicemail, leaving yourself a voicemail, and deleting it," he recommends.

New Vonage Forum Member Esquire360 says that his stepmother wants to sign up for Vonage service, and he wants to help her with that. But first he has a specific question, the nature of which has encouraged him to begin a Vonage Forum thread that he has entitled, Will this wireless setup work, through a network bridge?

"My step mom wants vonage, she has a computer that is connected wirelessly to my router, good signal," writes Esquire360, adding he knows the bridge works because he already can transfer movies from his Replay TV (which is like a TiVo) through a router to his computer.

"If I  plug my PAP2 Vonage adapter into the router on my step mom's end should it go across the bridge also, or will I need to tweak it to adjust settings," Esquire360 asks.

One of our very most knowledgeable and experienced Vonage Forum Members, navydavy2001, takes time out to lend his expertise to Esquire360's issues he's raised.

"The cheapest and easiest way to do this is to simply plug in the PAP to the router, connect a cordless phone base to it, and there ya go," navydavy2001 writes.

"I would not push the signal over the bridge," he adds. "It's useless, may introduce delay and other issues, and just plain isn't necessary."

Esquire360 then answers, "I'll need to run cat5 or phoneline... yikes, wireless would be best..."

But after seeing that post, navydavy2001 takes the time to tell Esquire360 why that's not a great idea.

"No you won't," writes navydavy2001. "Try this: Plug the PAP into the router, wherever it is, and leave it there. Connect a regular ole cordless phone base to the PAP. And leave it there.

"Now Mom can have the phone wherever she is, and she doesn't have to deal with any of the tech stuff, just the regular phone she's used to," navydavy2001 adds in his technically knowledgeable, but personable way.

Check Out Our Vonage TiVo, Fax and Alarms Forum

Writing up that last thread in which Esquire360 made reference to ReplayTV (which is similar in some respects to TiVo) reminded me that it would be a good idea to once again mention our Vonage TiVo, Fax and Alarms Forum.

We've noticed that a growing number of Vonage customers use their Vonage connections to dial and receive faxes, contact the TiVo service for regular television listing updates, and call their home security company with check-ins and - we hope this never happens- alerts. This section of the Vonage Forum, which now has more than 3,200 posts,  contains a linked list of threads and questions about using your Vonage line with these services. Here's the link.

Vonage Stock Report

On Monday  on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $7.26 a share, which was down four cents from Friday's $7.30 a share but up 13 cents from a session low of $7.17 a share.

Once again, our Vonage Stock Forum can be reached from this link.

Check Out Our New Vonage Forum Toolbar

After a ton of hard work and months of beta testing, I am happy to announce the release of the Vonage Forum Toolbar.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar can provide you with easy desktop access to your Vonage Voicemail as well as total minutes used during your billing period, It works for all Vonage.com, Vonage.ca and Vonage.uk users.

The Vonage Forum Toolbar works with Internet Explorer and Firefox.

If you have questions, or comments, I've made a NEW Vonage Forum Toolbar Thread. Here's the direct link.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Tuesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
