Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest. 

In the news, we'll find out which major U.S. metropolitan area now has Vonage E911 service, what National Basketball Association team Vonage is sponsoring television broadcasts of this season, and a contract Vonage has renewed with a company that provides important services involved with porting new Vonage subscriber's old phone numbers over to their Vonage accounts. We'll go over a Vonage Forum thread seeking a router recommendation, and a thread about the V-Tech phone.  We'll also bring you up to date on Vonage's stock price. And because today is Monday, we'll meet our new Vonage Forum Member of the Week.

.Vonage Expands E911 Availability In Los Angeles Area

Vonage today announced it now offers E911 availability in and around Los Angeles, California.

In addition to Los Angeles, Vonage recently turned up E911 at more than 125 local run emergency call centers across the U.S. in less than one month -- bringing the total percentage of Vonage U.S. subscriber lines that have E911 to over 89 percent. T9tal number of emergency call centers now equipped to receive Vonage E911 calls are now more than 5,700.

Vonage's nomadic E911 solution gives customers the ability to reach a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), or 911 center, through the dedicated 911 network infrastructure. With Vonage's nomadic E911 solution, a customer's call is automatically routed to the appropriate 911 center, with the caller's registered street address and telephone number appearing on the dispatcher screen -- regardless of where or what exchange they are calling from. Vonage was the first to provide nomadic Voip E911 in California, and will continue to turn up and test new PSAPs that are VoIP-ready every day.

"Turning up Los Angeles is a tremendous step for Vonage, as thousands more subscriber lines in California, one of Vonage's largest markets, now have full E911 capability," says Vonage CEO Mike Snyder. "In less than one month, Vonage equipped more than 100 locally run calling centers with E911. Vonage will continue to work with the FCC, regulators Congress and public safety officials until PSAPs across the nation are equipped with E911."

Vonage Signs Major Sponsorship Deal With New Jersey Nets

Vonage has just signed a new full-season multiyear television broadcast sponsorship pact with the New Jersey Nets of the U.S.-based National Basketball Association.  The sponsorship will be entitled Nets Basketball presented by Vonage, and will start next week with advertising announcing the season which begins in October. 

Vonage is based in Holmdel, New Jersey- the same state, of course, where the New Jersey Nets call home.

Vonage Extends Contract With Number-Porting Verification Service

Just this morning, Vonage announced that it has extended its contract with 3PV as its exclusive provider of third party verification services through 2009. And Vonage says This relationship further enhances Vonage’s Local Number Portability (LNP) process.

"Continuing its partnership with 3PV enables Vonage customers to expedite completions of the necessary paperwork required to port their number from their existing carrier," Vonage said in a statement released this morning. "3PV’s patent-pending eLOA product permits Vonage customers to complete a binding letter of agency on-line, during the subscriber’s account orders process or via email from a customer care agent. eLOA allows for shorter provisioning time and less expensive transaction costs due to the elimination of document handling fees."

"Vonage initially selected 3PV as we recognized its track record and reputation as technology innovators and regulatory experts. In our 18 months working with them, they’ve lived up to that reputation, “ said Michael Tribolet, president of Vonage America Inc. “By leveraging proprietary technology, 3PV has improved our customer experience and increased our completion rates for verifications. Expanding our relationship is a win-win for Vonage.”

On The Vonage Voip Forum

I notice that we get a good number of threads here seeking recommendations for products to use with the Vonage service. This new Vonage Forum thread called best wireless router with a phone outlet included? is an example of that.

"I've been using Vonage with the standard RT31P2 linksys router that Vonage sends you when you sign up with no problems at all," writes new Vonage Forum Member jstore to begin this thread. "A family member just recently got a laptop and long story short I have to replace what I'm using with a wireless router because from what I understand going router to router always seems to run into problems.

"So my question is, how many wireless routers are there with phone outlets already included?," jstore asks. "I've only been able to find the linksys WRT54GP2 that offers both. 

"Anyone have this and run into any problems with it? Anything better anyone can recommend?," jstore wants to know.

And Steve48 has some answers "in store" for jstore.

"Vonage used to supply the WRTP54G. You can find a lot of opinions on it by scanning the forum, but I think a fair summary would be that it's a good phone adapter and an 'adequate' router for light duty use," he writes. "Power users seemed to need to put a really good router in their setup and use the WRT for just phone or phone plus light duty wireless support."

Then Steve48 points out that Vonage is now supplying a D-link wireless router/phone adapter combo. "It hasn't been around long enough for a good judgment, but the consensus seems to be that the firmware needs work."

Steve48 closes his post with a recommendation to jstore.

"If I were you, I'd keep the RT31P2 and put a good wireless router with strong QoS in front of it," he writes. "Again, you can search the forum, but one of the recommendations has been to get the WRT54GL and use it with third party firmware."

New Vonage Forum Member etomic13 has just begun a new Vonage Forum Member thread that he decided to name, issues with VTech IP8100-1.

"I bought a VTech IP8100-1 from Best Buy and hooked everything according to directions," etomic13 tells us. "During the 5min process where you cannot disrupt the base I accidentally hit the power switch and shut off the modem. So the unit was defected so we bought a new one and set it up." 

Then etomic13 gets more into the specifics of what the problem seems to be here.

"Originally it was blinking yellow then it turned off then was solid red and now is solid yellow," he mentions. "When I turn on the handset it says try the other port I'm positive I set it up right."

"Hi Etomic, have you activated your VTech in Vonage?," asks fellow Vonage Forum Member saskia. "If not you need to go to the Vonage site, sign up for a new account, and they will activate one port for you to have service. They may help you checking the lights and may configure the device. Sometimes when you have a new device it needs to be configured.

Steve48 would agree. 

"Have you registered the unit with Vonage?," he asked etomiic13. "If you have, then please post the technical details listed in the sticky message at the top of the forum. If you haven't, it won't work until you do."

And since Steve talked about the "sticky message," I am now thinking it's time to bring that around again and explain what that's all about.

What Info To Post When You Are Having Tech Problems

A good number of threads and posts on the Vonage Forum are devoted to a technical issue a Forum Member is having with their Vonage service, and questions as to what is causing the problem and how it can be fixed. Being able to provide such solutions is a major reason why we are here.

We have many knowledgeable Vonage Forum members who repeatedly have jumped in and provided advice that has led to solutions. Generally, the best way for them to help you is if you provide as much information as you can about your setup and the nature of the problem you are having.

Over a year ago, one of those knowledgeable and always Vonage Forum Members actually started a thread advising what info you should provide when you start a thread that asks for help with a Vonage-related issue. Trowski's thread is called What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage..... I liked his points so much that I have made this thread a "sticky," which means it appears at the top of the Vonage Voip Forum thread list you see when you go to

Here's what Trowski advises that you post:

1. Your location
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
3. Upload and download speeds
4. Modem make and model
5. Type of Vonage adapter used i.e. RT31P2 or PAP2
6. Setup of Network i.e. Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing i.e. dropped calls, choppy audio etc
8. DETAILED results from with a test call to Boston.

"This will help you get the answers/resolution faster if you can post that first....," he writes.

And I added, "that a detailed title is very important, one that does not have the words: "Please", "Help" or "Vonage" in it. And if you haven't already done so, please take a minute to read the forum rules prior to posting for the first time."Vonage Stock Price Rises

On Friday  on the New York Stock Exchange, Vonage stock closed at $7.30 a share, which was down two cents from Thursday's $7.32 a share but up 20 cents from a session low of $7.10 a share.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75
