Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - September 15 - 17, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 15, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll tell you how to find out more about Vonage blocking in two Middle Eastern nations.. We'll go over a newly posted Vonage Forum thread about an easy way to solve a common router problem. Today is Friday, time for our In The Blogs feature. And we'll catch up on Vonage's stock price.

Vonage Blocks In Dubai, Qatar Still Lighting Up The Vonage Forum

On an otherwise light news day, I notice that media outlets are picking up on two stories that you Vonage Forum Members first called to light here on the Vonage Forum, and are still making lots of posts about. That would be the Voip and Vonage blocks that have been underway in the Middle Eastern locations of Dubai and Qatar.

To get up to speed on the latest, I suggest you may want to check these Vonage Forum threads: Vonage not active in Dubai, U.A.E. Probable ISP block  (more than 380 threads and well over 15,000 page views), and Loss of Voip in Qatar (more than 265 threads and get this- well over 32,000 page views)!

Speaking of the Vonage Forum...

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member sfaulkner establishes a new Vonage Forum thread about a topic we see here fairly often. He's entitled this new thread problems with router.

He says that his router tells him the Vonage box has obtained an IP address, but it can't seem to connect to anything.

"I am almost positive that my router is blocking the connection somehow......would there be anything id have to enable on my router to let Vonage pass?.....cause it's been blinking 3 times for quite some time now," sfaulkner writes.

"Try forwarding Vonage's Ports, they are listed in your Vonage paperwork, on the router....this should let the (Terminal Adapter) pass," writes fellow Vonage Forum Member chinka01. He then describes his setup as: DSL MODEM ---->ROUTER---->VONAGE TA---->EVERYTHING ELSE.

"I have had to forward the ports to allow the TA to pass thru the router but after that NO PROBLEM," chinka01 adds.

If you have a Vonage router, put that in front of the other routers so you don't have to worry about port forwarding and call quality would be better," adds another Vonage Forum Member, canibus23.

Steve48 adds, "And even if you don't want to do it that way long term, it will tell you whether your primary router has been keeping the Vonage box from working."

In The Blogs

We read about 15 Voip and IP-telephony-related Weblogs. Some we read more than others, but we enjoy most of them. Face it, bloggers are opinion-shapers. So today, we are going to give you a round-up of what the blogs we read have said about Vonage recently.

Here's what the Voip bloggers have been writing about:

Rich Tehrani of VoIP Blog, doesn't write about Vonage this week, but last week he passed along a line he heard about Vonage going public, as well as links to Tom Keating's blog post about number portability.

Alec Saunders of Alec Saunders .LOG writes about the extent of the competitive threat to Vonage from all those instant messaging applications that seek to provide Internet telephony.

Andy Abramson of VoIP Watch writes about his experiences at the Fall VON show, which just ended yesterday. Although Andy doesn't directly mention it, Jeff Citron, Vonage's chairman, delivered a keynote.

Jeff Pulver of has lots of posts about the Fall VON show, which Pulver owns and just ended yesterday in Bostn. He has even posted a video of his keynote address..

Om Malik of Om Malik's Broadband Blog writes about where he sees Vonage heading, in the light of Vonage's announcement last week they have more than two million subscribers.

Tom Keating of VoIP Blog very recently wrote about what he thinks may be a change in the type of television advertising Vonage does.

Mark Evans of the Telecom .. and Tech blog (he's from Canada, which is a northern country, and writes more posts about telecom and tech) wrote about the interview Vonage Chairman and Chief Strategist Jeff Citron did in the New York Times.

Russell Shaw of the ZDNet IP Telephony blog wrote about why Vonage's announcement that it has contracted for on-premise installation services in 39 U.S. cities not only makes sense, but is a great idea, too.

Paul Kapustka of the Paul Kapustka blog writes about Vonage Chairman and Chief Strategist Jeff Citron's Fall VON 2006 keynote speech.

PhoneBoy of the PhoneBoy blog wrote about some problems a softphone competitor of Vonage (not Skype) has been having with their users dialing toll-free"800" numbers.

Garrett Smith of the Smith On VoIP blog writes about some new Voip phones. He doesn't mention this directly, but some of these sets can be used with Vonage's service.

Ken Camp of the Realtime-VoIP offers some interviews he did at VON. And last week he linked to a blog entry that makes a lot of controversial assertions about Vonage and its motivations for going public.

Cynthia Brumfield of IP Democracy writes about a particularly contentious session at VON about net neutrality- a concept Vonage fully supports.

From time to time, we like to feature interesting and entertaining posts from Blogs that are not necessarily about VoIP, but mention Vonage. In this new blog I came across last night called Aaron Davis NMTCS, blogger Aaron Davis writes, "I don’t think Skype stacks up very while with Vonage because you get the best of online telephone service and home telephone with Vonage. You can call 9-11 on Vonage and a big different is that you can call from a real phone to your Vonage phone. On Skype you can’t do the same of the same things you can do with Vonage." Here's the link to Aaron's post.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page:, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Monday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest, including our popular Vonage Forum Member of the Week announcement.
