Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - September 14, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 14, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll read about a new program intended to provide Vonage installation services to residential and commercial customers in 39 U.S. metro areas. We'll go over newly posted Vonage Forum threads- one about changing the duration of Vonage rings before an answering machine picks up, as well as a thread about an adapter-related issue. And we'll catch up on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage To Offer Installation Services In 39 Cities

Vonage says that Endeavor Telecom will provide it with  a professional installation program for residential and SOHO (Small Office/Home Office) customers, in 39 cities throughout the United States. Vonage explains that the Vonage/Endeavor installation program will help consumers to realize hassle-free cost-savings on every phone in their home or small office. The cost of the installation starts at $99.95, and also includes professional testing and quality control services.

"Endeavor increases Vonage's value proposition by giving customers a convenient alternative to self-installation. We understand that some people just don't want the hassle, nor do they have the time to install Vonage themselves. For those customers who are intimidated by new technologies, professional installation makes the switch to Vonage easy by giving people a hassle-free way to get Vonage set-up in your home or small office," says Vonage CEO Mike Snyder.

"Vonage is the country's best-known Voip brand - and we're thrilled to play a role in improving the customer experience," adds Justin McLain, executive vice president of Endeavor Telecom. "We share many of the same core values - technical expertise and unprecedented customer service - and we're honored to align our business with a leader like Vonage."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Because new Vonage Forum Member chi_ray would like his Vonage phone rings to last longer in duration, he decided to open a Vonage Forum thread about the issue. He's calling this thread VT2442 - Short Ring Cadence on inbound calls.

"I estimate that my incoming ring duration is about 1/2 of my previous phone service," writes chi_ray. I have read that others have been able to get Vonage Tech Support to adjust the hexadecimal settings to make the ring cadence longer."

But then chi_ray writes that he I has sent Vonage a request to do this an received the following response:

"We are sorry to inform you that the duration of a single ring can not be changed. But the total number of rings can be changed by adjusting the time for the Voicemail. For that please follow the below steps: "

Next, chi_ray asks, "does anyone have an idea on how to approach this with Vonage? Right now I have about 5 seconds to answer the phone before my answering machine picks up. I need the answering machine instead of voicemail because I use a fax machine and it can stop the answering machine from picking up if there is a fax incoming."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member  follows up.

"You have set 5 seconds to answer the phone before your answering machine picks up," he writes. "You have to decide correctly which one should take place first "voicemail or answering machine";

1) If answering machine, then voicemail time setting should be more than answering machine," adds suresh2222. "To adjust the voicemail settings, go to and login into your account. Click on "features"...... "Voicemail Settings"..............."configure" button......... and increase the time in "Voicemail Status" you can increase the ringing time up to 50 sec. 2)If voicemail, then voicemail time setting should be less than answering machine."

Motorola VT2442 Duplex Mode? is a new Vonage Forum thread which has been opened by new Vonage Forum Member crendall.

"Is there a way to configure the duplex mode for the WAN port?," crendall asks. "I've gone through the options on the phone adapter but I didn't see anything that would let me change the WAN port. I did see where I could set the LAN ports though."

Next, crendall asks if there are  firmware upgrades available for the VT2442? "The manual talks about importing and exporting setting on the phone adapter but I don't have those options that I could find."

"I don't think you can change the duplex on the WAN port, and I can't see why you would want to either as that would break your Vonage service for sure," explains xcrunxc, who is currently our Vonage Forum Member of the Week. "Changing it to half-duplex would give you one way audio at best, if any audio at all. Firmware upgrades are automatically pushed out to your device from the Vonage servers, there is no way to download them yourself. When a new firmware comes out your device will have it within a few hours.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day.
