Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 13, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll read what Vonage Chairman and Chief Strategist Jeffrey Citron told an industry audience at the VON show in Boston yesterday. We'll also mention what steps  We'll go over newly posted Vonage Forum threads on adapter issues. And we'll catch up on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Citron Gives Industry Keynote

Vonage Chairman and Chief Strategist Jeffrey Citron gave a keynote presentation at Fall 2006 VON in Boston.

"We're still the leading national [VoIP] provider," said Citron

"It's extremely important to achieve scale," said Citron, noting that Vonage is now paying less per user in backbone fees because it can work out better deals.

Citron also said that Vonage may cut back on marketing, because thanks to that marketing, Vonage is better known than before.

"You can walk into any room, do the 'Woo-Hoo' song and people know it's Vonage," Citron added.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

A new Vonage Forum thread named Using European phone: Compatible with adapter? finds thread-starter and Vonage Forum Member troglodyte asking a very interesting question.

"I'm living in Europe and for the last few months have been using my American phone with my adapter," writes troglodyte, whose real first name is Marc. "My phone died tonight and I need to buy a new phone. My question: Can I buy any phone here in Europe and just plug it into my adapter? Do I need to buy a certain type of phone or be on the lookout for anything in particular."

"Most of Europe uses the RJ-12 standard for their telephone plugs," answers xcrunxc, who is currently Vonage Forum Member of the Week. "Your Vonage device would be using RJ-11(The US standard). You should be able to purchase a converter to make the RJ-12 phone work with your RJ-11 device at an electronic store, and I believe they are not very expensive either from what I hear."

Vonage Forum Member Lesmiz starts a new thread entitled How to upgrade Vonage router/phone adapter.

"My Linksys WRT54GP2 failed. I like to upgrade to a new phone adapter," Lesmiz writes.

Questions:

1) If I purchased a new retail version, will I still qualify for the rebates/incentives as an existing customer? Motorola and D-Link have almost 100% rebate incentive on their phone adapters in local retail stores.

2) or do I need to quit Vonage first and comeback as a new customer in order to take the advantage of the incentives?

3) Does Vonage have any other programs that will give me a free phone adapter?"

Answering again is xcrunxc.

"All of the rebates on devices stipulate that it is only good for new Vonage customer's if you sign up for a new Vonage account, and stay a customer for at least 90 days," he writes. "So, you would need to cancel your service and sign up again if you wanted the full rebate.

"Even doing that is risky, as it does stipulate you must be a NEW Vonage customer," he adds. "They may let your rebate go through but I would use a different credit card and address if you wanted to be sure you would get your rebate. If you call up and ask Vonage about it, they may give you a $40 credit towards a new device on your current account, that's really the only alternative."

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Thursday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
