Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - September 12, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 12, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll learn where Vonage ranked among Internet advertisers last year. We'll go over newly posted Vonage Forum threads about two different types of router questions and issues. And we'll catch up on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Vonage The Leading Business to Business Internet Advertiser in 2005

According to an analysis of ad spending issued by advertising and marketing research firm TNS Media Intelligence and just published in B2B magazine,

The No. 1 business to business Internet advertiser in 2005 was Vonage, which increased its online ad spending from $14.7 million in 2004 to $68.9 million in 2005 (up 370.1%). B2B magazine's Kate Maddox notes that "Vonage launched aggressive online ads last year, including some that used video."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Because new Vonage Forum Member rohan wanted to know about routers to use with his Vonage service, he's launched a Vonage Forum thread that he has entitled, Linksys Wireless Router (WRTP54G).

"Any suggestion/comments/inputs regarding Linksys Wireless Router (WRTP54G)," rohan asks. "I am planning to buy this router with in built Vonage adapter for Vonage phone service. I would be using this router with Comcast service to avail Vonage service."

Then rohan ends his post with a question about whether he should buy this router.

"A lot depends on your needs. If you have modest Internet requirements, then the Vonage/Linksys wireless unit may be just what you need," writes Steve48. "If you're a power user, then the limitations of the Vonage units as routers may bite you."

Then Steve notes that for the power user, a frequent recommendation is the WRT54GL with third party firmware, and a separate Vonage adapter just to handle the phone. He then suggests that rohan look through the forum archives and where he will find discussions on this very subject.

Bridge mode on a Motorola VT2442 is an interesting new Vonage Forum thread that was started by new Vonage Forum Member EvilOtto. (I get a kick out of that name, BTW).

First, EvilOtto asks if any other Vonage Forum Member happens to know if this router can be put into bridge mode.

"We've got 4 of these routers behind a cable modem and have been having sound quality issues," he writes. "I've read that if you put the Vonage router in front of everything else on the network it prioritizes better, so I wanted to do that. However, with the multiple router setup, I can see how it would get more complicated."

Then, EvilOtto explains why he's asking this question.

"Basically I just want the router to act as a switch instead of a router," he elaborates. "I know this can be done on Linksys units (I've done that myself), but if it's possible on the Motorola vt2442 it's very well hidden IMHO."

Then fellow Vonage Forum Member vonalink asks EvilOtto if he has tried the following steps:

1. Set the WAN to a static IP address that is different from your LAN. For example, if your LAN is 192.168.0.x. set the WAN IP to 192.168.10.1

2. Turn off DHCP.

3. Use only the LAN side jacks.

And then Steve48 jumps on with his always valuable insights and suggestions.

"People have had success doing this with the VT2442," writes Steve48. "Turn off DHCP in the VT, plug an Ethernet cable from the main router to a LAN port on the VT, and another from a LAN port on the VT to the WAN port on the VT."

Next, Steve48 suggests that EvilOtto (I like typing that name) might want to look at this: http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic15938.html . "Start near the bottom of the first page," Steve48 says about that thread, which is entitled, "Actiontec GT701-WG/Motorola VT2442."

Come And Watch Some Vonage Ads!

The news item in this Digest about Vonage's video ads reminded me to tell you again that you can watch 20 of Vonage's most popular memorable ads in the Vonage TV Commercials section of the Vonage Forum.

It's no secret that Vonage's tv commercials are popular, and quite funny. On the Vonage TV Commercials Forum area of the Vonage Forums, we have a list of these commercials. Want to watch one? Click on the name of the tv commercial and you'll go to a page with the commercial playing. You can watch the same commercial over and over, or pause if you want to freeze-frame. And there's no special streaming media software to install!

Here's the link.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Wednesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
