Vonage VoIP Forum Digest - September 11, 2006

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

September 11, 2006

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

In the news, we'll hear about how talking to your kid about Vonage can help them improve their financial skills. We'll go over newly posted Vonage Forum threads from a Vonage Forum Member with an adapter-router issue, as well as if it is a good idea to buy a Vonage router on eBay.

In The News

Vonage Backed As a Way To Improve Kid's "Money Literacy"

The Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Finance and Literacy reports that in its most recent test of high school seniors’ money literacy, the average score was a barely passing 52.4 percent.

"You can help your kids earn an “A” in money matters by developing their financial skills early," the group says in a document picked up by U.S. wire services.

"Try Internet phoning. It’s not as complicated as it sounds. To get started, you need something called Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), which relays phone calls via a high-speed Internet connection. Service costs about $20 a month or more and offers unlimited local and long distance calls — which could save you about $400 a year if you already have high-speed Internet," the group writes.

"You’ll also pay less in taxes. Check with your cable company to see if it offers a package with your cable or DSL, or try a company such as Vonage, which specializes in VoIP," they add. Just remember, you must have an Internet connection and electricity for it to work — so have a basic landline as a backup.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member cstill couldn't "be still" until he learned how to figure out the procedure for setting his Motorola VT2442 adapter with his WRT54G router to use with Vonage service. So that's why he decided to start a thread that he then named, Setting up VT2442 behind WRT54G router.

"I am on a cable modem that is connected to a WRT54G router and then to the VT2442," cstill explains. "I have 1 computer connected to the router and 2 connected to the VT2442 and trying to get them all to see each other. Because the VT2442 was assigning a different IP range, I went into the configuration of the VT2442 and changed from DHCP to DHCP relay thinking this would get the IP address from the router," he adds.

But then cstill writes that doing so did not pick up the router's IP range and now he cannot get back into the setup for the VT2442.

"How do I reset it to factory settings?," he then asks. He writes he has tried  the reset button as well as unplugging it for more than minutes and neither has helped.

But I will tell you who has helped- two of cstill's fellow Vonage Forum Members.

"You need to hold the reset button down for awhile," writes dcwebman. Tech support told me 30 seconds and I read somewhere else 90 seconds but it seemed like even less than 30 seconds worked for me.

"As far as setting up the two together, check out the topic http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic13841-10.html," dcwebman adds. Apparently nobody has gotten the Motorola's DHCP's relay to work.

Steve48, who was our Vonage Forum Member of the Week last week, is up next.

"After that you'll probably want to take a look at this thread: http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic15982.html," he writes.

And then cstill adds a post to this thread, informing us of his progress.

"Holding the reset button for 30 seconds did the trick," he writes. "As far and the DCHP, I will try moving the VT2442 in front of the router and turn DHCP off on the router.

Vonage Forum Member Ephesus was wondering whether or not it is ever a good idea to buy a Vonage router off of eBay. To find out, he begins a Vonage Forum thread that he's called, Buying a router on eBay?

"I now have a laptop and I want a wireless router. Is it safe to buy a wireless router on eBay (meaning will it work)?," asks Ephesus.

"Also, which router would you recommend -- I would prefer buying something used, but eBay has nothing... "

Well, from what at least two other Vonage Forum Members write, it is good that eBay doesn't have any Vonage-compatible routers.

"If you are talking about a Vonage router that you would also connect your phone to, then the answer is no do not buy from eBay," butterman advises. "Vonage will not connect a used device to a different account."

Then navydavy2001, who also runs the website Be Net Smart, points to this great article: http://reviews.ebay.com/Warning-Used-Vonage-Phone-Devices-on-Ebay_W0QQugidZ10000000001232307.

"Be warned, my friend, navydavy2001 tells Ephesus.

Vonage Forum Reaches 28 Million Page Views

On Friday evening the Vonage Forum received our 28 millionth page view since we launched  2 1/2 years ago in March, 2003. Every time you click on a page here -reading how-to-articles-making or even just browsing a Forum post, etc., that counts as a page view. So let's see how quickly we can get to 29 million!

We Have A New Vonage Forum Member of the Week

Ever since he joined the Vonage Forum five weeks ago, I've noticed that xcrunxc has jumped right in, giving lots of very skilled advice to Vonage Forum posters. He's made nearly 100 such posts already. So it is time to name xcrunxc this week's Vonage Forum Member of the Week. To browse through a list of xrunxc's posts, click here.

We've Updated Our Voip Speed Test

I wanted to call your attention to our upgraded Voip Speed Test.

Instead of the simple upload/download test, this one has all the reporting that is needed to diagnose ISP issues such as Jitter and Packet Loss.

The advanced report screen has been configured with a "Copy to Clip Board" button so you can easily paste the results in the forums.

I would like to thank the following members for giving valuable input during the beta testing: reebok, Steve48, NateHoy, VonageTPA, Trowski and scerruti.

For those of you that are interested in the details behind the results, the following are the tests parameters:

The test is located in Washington DC.

The data.bin file for the speed test upload/download is 10Mb with 8 seconds max time out.

75,000 bytes is used to calculate the number of supported Voip lines.

Other variables:

Voip lines simulated =1
voip bytes per packet =8
voip simulation seconds =10
voip packets per second =75

If you have any questions about this test, feel free to post them in this thread.

As we close out today's Digest, I'd like to remind you once again about some more options you have to receive the Vonage Voip Forum Digest every day. If you go to this page: http://www.vonage-forum.com/syndication.html, you will see a list of RSS Newsreaders from which with one or two clicks, you'll be able to get your Digest delivered directly to your Newsreader each morning. The Newsreaders we've linked to on that page include such reliable and trusted services as Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, Newsgator and Feedburner. I am open to add others, just contact me with the info of the Newsreader.

That's what's hot about Vonage today. We'll be back on Tuesday morning with our next edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.
